Abstract
Organisational change is typically conceptualised as moving from the status quo to a new, desired, configuration to better match the environment. Change could, therefore, be seen as a departure from the norm, or alternatively as normal and simply a natural response to environmental and internal conditions. Static models of organisations are being displaced by dynamic models, which reflect the discontinuous nature of organisational change. Developments in theory suggest limitations to contingency approaches, which carry the assumptions of static models of change. Analysis of this case at PowerCo in Australia reveals a number of issues related to changes aimed at achieving a more commercial, profit‐oriented, focus. Points out that the contextualist approach is holistic, in which these aspects interact with each other as change unfolds temporally. A contextualist framework permits models of change to be visualised as dynamic rather than static, having a temporal setting which has multiple causes acting as loops rather than simple lines. This enables change to be understood as a discontinuous phenomenon having the benefits, without the limitations, of rational contingency models.

Abstract
This experimental study investigates the connotative (measured) meaning of the concept “auditor independence” within three audit engagement case contexts, including two acknowledged in the literature to represent significant potential threats to independence. The study’s research design utilises the measurement of meaning (semantic differential) framework originally proposed by Osgood et al. (1957). Findings indicate that research participants considered the concept of independence within a two factor cognitive structure comprising “emphasis” and “variability” dimensions. Participants’ connotations of independence varied along both these dimensions in response to the alternative experimental case scenarios. In addition, participants’ perceptions of the auditor’s independence in the three cases were systematically associated with the identified connotative meaning dimensions.

Marketing education that develops in students an understanding of core theory and practical principles, but does not encourage students to see connections between the courses that they study, may not sufficiently meet current organisational needs. The present organisational trend in Australia and New Zealand towards agility and flexibility, demands not only that employees be equipped with necessary technical knowledge, but that they must be able to integrate and use that knowledge in a creative and synergistic manner. A possible solution put forward in this paper lies in a more integrated course curriculum and means of assessment, with an emphasis on attitude change and integrative ability rather than a revolutionary alteration of the knowledge base.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to re-examine the concept of alienation, particularly from the perspective of existential psychology. While research interest continues to centre on links between human resource management (HRM) and organizational performance, such as in studies by Beer et al. (1984), Huselid (1995), Becker and Gerhart (1996) and Guest (2011), there is a growing interest in individual attributes such as employee well-being in addition to organizational performance, as mentioned in studies by Macky and Boxall (2007), Wood and de Menezes (2011) and Guest and Conway (2011). In this paper, we focus on issues related to the individual, and in doing so we suggest that HRM theory needs further development, as pointed out by Guest (2011).
Design/methodology/approach
This is a paper in the tradition of critical theory that draws on both classical and modern research in the business and psychology literature. It outlines the development of the concept of alienation from its classic articulation by Marx through to the perspective offered by existential psychologists such as Blauner (1964). How alienation, thus, defined might manifest in the workplace is then discussed, as are its links to other concepts associated in the literature with positive and negative work experiences is presented.
Findings
We argue that alienation needs to be addressed at two levels, namely, at the systemic level, in terms of factors external to the individual such as work and organizational systems and processes, and in terms of factors internal to the individual’s “state of mind”. We offer strategies for management to consider counterbalancing the negative effects of residual feelings of powerlessness, meaninglessness, isolation and self-estrangement that systemic change is unable to eliminate.
Originality/value
The paper refocuses attention on the individual within the context of HRM, the effects of alienation and other outcomes of positive and negative work experiences such as work engagement and job burnout.

Deregulation in the electricity supply industry (ESI) is taking place globally and this paper analyses a case of reform in Australia. The focus is on change management rather than the technical aspects of power generation, transmission and retail supply. Change theory has moved on from static models to dynamic models of strategic choice and it is against this background that the case is viewed. A contextualist approach is employed in which the substance, context and politics of change are used to analyse unfolding events. Management implications of the case are discussed.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of the paper is to examine the extent to which there is shared meaning of the concept of auditor independence between the three major groups of parties on the demand and supply sides of the audit services market – auditors, financial report preparers and financial report users.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper utilises the measurement of meaning framework (semantic differential analysis) originally proposed by Osgood et al. in 1957. The framework is used to investigate the extent to which there is shared meaning (agreement in interpretations) of the independence concept, in response to alternative audit engagement case contexts, between key parties to the financial reporting communication process. The study's research data was collected in the period March 2004‐May 2005.
Findings
Findings indicate a robust and stable single‐factor cognitive structure within which the research participants interpret the connotative meaning of the auditor independence concept. An analysis of the experimental cases finds similarities in connotations (interpretations) of an audit firm's independence for the participant groups for most cases, with the exception of cases involving the joint provision of audit and non‐audit (taxation) services.
Research limitations/implications
The usual external validity threat that applies to experimental research generally applies to the study. That is, the results may not be generalisable to settings beyond those examined in the study. An important implication of the study is that it emphasises the continuing problematic nature of the joint provision of audit and non‐audit services, even in situations where the non‐audit services comprise only traditional taxation services.
Originality/value
The study is the first to examine the concept of auditor independence by means of the Osgood et al. measurement of meaning research framework using, as research participants, the three major groups on the demand and supply sides of the audit services market.

Abstract
Current responses to women's violence are rooted in stereotypical views that delink women's violence from the context of gendered inequality and social marginalisation that mediates it. In this chapter, we draw from feminist scholarship on women's violence, including violence by female sex workers (FSWs), and qualitative data to examine different forms of FSWs' violence against their male clients and the contexts that shape their use of violence. Twenty-seven in-depth interviews were conducted with FSWs recruited through snowball sampling in Uyo, Nigeria. Thematic analysis revealed three forms of violence: ‘situational violence’ – an individual-centred, self-defensive and spontaneous response to conflict situations; ‘collective violence’ – pre-meditated violence used by a group of FSWs to revenge the victimisation of its member, and ‘symbolic violence’ – the un-planned outcome of FSWs' violence that has the effect of deterring client violence and inducing cooperative behaviour. FSWs use violence to deter or counter threatened or enacted client violence and to exact revenge for past victimisation. They also use violence to enforce rules, extract payments and establish solidarity. FSWs' violence is contextualised within the everyday experience of client violence. This violence is not only reactionary; it is a pragmatic attempt to negotiate structural and gender dynamics that shape risks in sex work.

Expanding beyond rudimentary post observation and analysis, social media analytics unfolds a comprehensive exploration of diverse data streams encompassing social media platforms and blogs, thereby facilitating an all-encompassing understanding of the dynamic social customer landscape. During an extensive evaluation of social media presence, various indicators such as popularity, impressions, user engagement, content flow, and brand references undergo meticulous scrutiny. Invaluable intelligence lies within user-generated data stemming from social media platforms, encompassing valuable customer perspectives, feedback, and recommendations that have the potential to revolutionize numerous operational facets, including supply chain management. Despite its intrinsic worth, the actual business value of social media data is frequently overshadowed due to the pervasive abundance of content saturating the digital realm. In response to this concern, the present study introduces a cutting-edge system known as the Enterprise Just-in-time Decision Support System (EJDSS).
Design/methodology/approach
Leveraging deep learning techniques and advanced analytics of social media data, the EJDSS aims to propel business operations forward. Specifically tailored to the domain of marketing, the framework delineates a practical methodology for extracting invaluable insights from the vast expanse of social data. This scholarly work offers a comprehensive overview of fundamental principles, pertinent challenges, functional aspects, and significant advancements in the realm of extensive social data analysis. Moreover, it presents compelling real-world scenarios that vividly illustrate the tangible advantages companies stand to gain by incorporating social data analytics into their decision-making processes and capitalizing on emerging investment prospects.
Findings
To substantiate the efficacy of the EJDSS, a detailed case study centered around reverse logistics resource recycling is presented, accompanied by experimental findings that underscore the system’s exceptional performance. The study showcases remarkable precision, robustness, F1 score, and variance statistics, attaining impressive figures of 83.62%, 78.44%, 83.67%, and 3.79%, respectively.
Originality/value
This scholarly work offers a comprehensive overview of fundamental principles, pertinent challenges, functional aspects, and significant advancements in the realm of extensive social data analysis. Moreover, it presents compelling real-world scenarios that vividly illustrate the tangible advantages companies stand to gain by incorporating social data analytics into their decision-making processes and capitalizing on emerging investment prospects.
