Abstract

Purpose

The idea is to exploit the natural stability and performance of the human arm during movement, execution and manipulation. The purpose of this paper is to remotely control a handling robot with a low cost but effective solution.

Design/methodology/approach

The developed approach is based on three different techniques to be able to ensure movement and pattern recognition of the operator’s arm as well as an effective control of the object manipulation task. In the first, the methodology works on the kinect-based gesture recognition of the operator’s arm. However, using only the vision-based approach for hand posture recognition cannot be the suitable solution mainly when the hand is occluded in such situations. The proposed approach supports the vision-based system by an electromyography (EMG)-based biofeedback system for posture recognition. Moreover, the novel approach appends to the vision system-based gesture control and the EMG-based posture recognition a force feedback to inform operator of the real grasping state.

Findings

The main finding is to have a robust method able to gesture-based control a robot manipulator during movement, manipulation and grasp. The proposed approach uses a real-time gesture control technique based on a kinect camera that can provide the exact position of each joint of the operator’s arm. The developed solution integrates also an EMG biofeedback and a force feedback in its control loop. In addition, the authors propose a high-friendly human-machine-interface (HMI) which allows user to control in real time a robotic arm. Robust trajectory tracking challenge has been solved by the implementation of the sliding mode controller. A fuzzy logic controller has been implemented to manage the grasping task based on the EMG signal. Experimental results have shown a high efficiency of the proposed approach.

Research limitations/implications

There are some constraints when applying the proposed method, such as the sensibility of the desired trajectory generated by the human arm even in case of random and unwanted movements. This can damage the manipulated object during the teleoperation process. In this case, such operator skills are highly required.

Practical implications

The developed control approach can be used in all applications, which require real-time human robot cooperation.

Originality/value

The main advantage of the developed approach is that it benefits at the same time of three various techniques: EMG biofeedback, vision-based system and haptic feedback. In such situation, using only vision-based approaches mainly for the hand postures recognition is not effective. Therefore, the recognition should be based on the biofeedback naturally generated by the muscles responsible of each posture. Moreover, the use of force sensor in closed-loop control scheme without operator intervention is ineffective in the special cases in which the manipulated objects vary in a wide range with different metallic characteristics. Therefore, the use of human-in-the-loop technique can imitate the natural human postures in the grasping task.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop initial evidence about the nature and features of crowdfunding in China, given it is largely unregulated regulatory frameworks.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper used extensive desk research using data collected from the public and private sectors, after which the data was analyzed parallel to existing academic literature, that is, institutional context by Bruton et al. (2014). This paper uncovered patterns of development, profiling crowdfunding platforms, examining the regulatory landscape and providing antecedents of successful crowdfunding projects in China.

Findings

When the traditional financial markets are hard to reach, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) were starved for capital. Crowdfunding can play a major role in funding and risk sharing. It is an innovative and dynamic vehicle for MSMEs as well as enthusiastic investors in China. Since its initial introduction to China in 2009, crowdfunding has gained substantial popularity in a relatively short period. Currently, there is still not an identifiable guideline on how to delineate the significance of the crowdfunding platform. The development of crowdfunding in China faces a few unresolved key issues. As researchers exploring this phenomenon in new ways, crowdfunding platforms can be enhanced in a manner that benefits the capital seeker, investors and society as a whole.

Originality/value

There is a dearth of information on start-up crowdfunding in Asia. With little data available to analyze, so this paper hopes to contribute to knowledge and provide valuable information to researchers and industry representations. Crowdfunding represents a potentially disruptive change in the way that new ventures are funded. This paper represents an initial analysis in the study of new ventures in China. Finally, the authors provide recommendations for entrepreneurs, investors and policymakers as well as researchers and practitioners with suggestions about yet unexplored avenues of research.

Purpose

In this study, the authors aim to address the following two research questions: (1) How do technology innovation paradoxes manifest themselves in technological changes? (2) How do incumbent firms manage technology innovation paradoxes through multi-level organizational ambidexterity? To do so, the authors examine technology innovation in cloud computing, which has taken shape and brought about changes to the information technology industry. Specifically, the authors examine how a traditional software company, China Standard Software Co., Ltd. (CS2C), successfully navigated the technological transition to cloud computing from its existing operating systems business by managing innovation paradoxes through multi-level ambidexterity capabilities.

Design/methodology/approach

This study examines a single exploratory case and conducts an in-depth analysis of how technology innovation paradoxes manifest themselves in technological changes and how incumbent firms manage technology innovation paradoxes through multi-level organizational ambidexterity. The data collection and analysis occurred simultaneously through three phases. In Phase 1, one of the authors who had worked at CS2C for many years enabled the authors to obtain access to the company. The data analysis during this phase provided the authors with the history and current situation of CS2C, enabling them to understand the external circumstances, such as particular historical period, and internal conditions, such as cultural and technological changes, that would be relevant throughout the course of their study. It also helped the authors identify organizational ambidexterity capability as the guiding theoretical concept for their research. In Phase 2, the authors engaged in site visits and conducted detailed interviews with employees working at CS2C. In Phase 3, most of the data analysis was conducted. When the interview data were not sufficient to support the theoretical analysis, additional data were collected via phone calls and emails, to assure data-theory-model alignment.

Findings

The authors’ findings show that technology innovation paradoxes manifest themselves as contradictory relationships and mutual support relationships between exploitative and exploratory innovation. In addition, the authors identify three integration mechanisms as key to multi-level organizational ambidexterity capabilities in managing technology innovation paradoxes in technological changes.

Originality/value

Three important theoretical implications can be drawn from our case analysis. First, this research contributes to the knowledge of innovation paradoxes during technological changes. Second, this research provides a model of multi-level organizational ambidexterity capability in technological changes. Third, this research proposes three integration mechanisms driven by three types of ambidexterity capability at different organizational levels.

Abstract

Purpose

Agriculture is one sector where the Internet of things (IoT) is expected to make a major impact. Yet, its adoption in the sector falls behind expectations. The purpose of this paper is to present the state-of-the-art of IoT in agriculture and investigate its slow adoption in the sector.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors have undertaken a systematic review and a synthesis of 1355 relevant publications over the last decade.

Findings

This literature review reveals that the “big three” barriers for the overall sector are cost, skills and standardization. The lack of connectivity and data governance are two key reasons why most of the proposed IoT solutions are standalone systems of limited scope, while the majority of commercial IoT efforts focus on practices in the protected indoor environment. Lastly, the analysis of past research along the five layers of the IoT system architecture reveals limited attention to barriers and solutions at the business layer, which represents a research opportunity for information systems scholars.

Research limitations/implications

It is possible that some of relevant publications were missed in the literature search, although the search queries were kept as broad as possible to avoid the exclusion of any relevant work. Any publication written in any other language other than English was excluded from the review. Given the geographical distribution of the reviewed English publications (see section 4.1), it is highly likely that important works written by Chinese and European scholars in their native language were overlooked.

Practical implications

This study provides practical insights into the technical and organisational challenges on the ground. It is the hope that this literature review lays the groundwork for IS researchers who are well positioned to investigate technology adoption challenges in the relatively understudied agriculture sector.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first comprehensive review of adoption barriers and solutions across all five layers of the IoT system architecture.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper studies early stages of actor mobilization for institutional change within Swedish esports.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors employ interpretative phenomenological analysis.

Findings

The authors’ findings explain how actors become motivated to act in critical reflections linked to conflicting legitimacy judgments and emotionally charged personal struggles. Moreover, the findings show how, as actors get activated in collective action, they identify efficacy lines around valid domains and experience emotionally charged collective endeavors. Furthermore, the findings explain how particularities in early experiences project legitimacy aspirations that orient collective action toward validity ends and particular values and ideals shaping actors' grassroots movements.

Originality/value

This study adds to legitimacy and institutional change theory through individual actors' perspectives, providing key insights into how they are motivated, activated, and oriented. This study is the first to investigate grassroots activists' personal stories in esports.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper examines the intent to adopt blockchain-facilitated Halal traceability (BFHT) scheme in Indonesian firms' Halal food supply chain (SC). This study integrates Halal-focused attitude, innovation diffusion and institutional theories to construct the model.

Design/methodology/approach

Data collection uses a simple random sampling method. Respondents are company leaders with experience and knowledge regarding Halal SC. The SEM-PLS approach was applied to test the hypothetical structure.

Findings

The intent to adopt BFHT is considerably affected by perceived attractiveness, as perceived attractiveness is considerably affected by institutional forces, which are significantly influenced by Halal-focused attitude. Firms that follow a completely Halal-focused attitude show higher awareness regarding institutional forces that motivate them to adopt a BFHT.

Originality/value

This research is among the initial works regarding Halal SCs that integrate Halal-focused attitude, innovation diffusion and institutional theories to recognise firms' intent to adopt a BFHT scheme.

Abstract

Purpose

The pandemic crisis has resulted in global chaos that had caused massive disruption to the supply chain. The pharmaceutical industry, in particular, has been working tirelessly to ensure that they can cater to the people who need them. With restrictions being imposed to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the movement of raw materials required has been affected, thus creating the need for the procurement function to be innovative. This study proposes the application of Industry 4.0 concepts into the procurement activities of an organization to make it more resilient and efficient.

Design/methodology/approach

To study the intensity of the challenges, Total Interpretive Structural Modelling is used alongside the “Matrice des Impacts Croises Multiplication Appliquee a un Classement” (MICMAC) technique.

Findings

Resilience can be achieved through the collaboration between the organization and its network of suppliers. This is however easier said than done. High and unclear investments have been identified as the challenge that is taking a toll on all technological investments in the pandemic era. The study also shows that organizational inertia which is present in established and structured firms are a deterrent as well.

Originality/value

This study is based on the application of procurement 4.0 to ensure that pharmaceutical supply chains stay least affected since they are essentials. This study using a multi-criteria decision-making approach to prioritize the challenges. This will help practitioners make decisions faster.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of strut size on the compressive response for selective laser-melted lattice structure with a body-centered cubic (BCC) unit cell.

Design/methodology/approach

Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation were used to predict the compressive stiffness and strength of the lattice structures with different struts, and compression testing was conducted to validate the predicted results. The effect of strut size on actual porosity was determined with the dry weighting method. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the fracture morphologies.

Findings

The actual porosities in all the specimens turned out to be a little lower than the values expected from design. The maximum deviation appears at the strut size of 1.25 mm. The theoretical analysis reveals that the junctions of BCC unit cells are the most loaded points, and the maximum compression resistance load is proportional to the strut size. The stress–strain curves and collapse modes predicted by numerical simulation are in good agreement with the theoretical calculation and experimental results. The compression stress increases monotonously in strut size of 0.50–2.00 mm. The fracture morphologies reflect a transition from a mixed to ductile fracture mechanism. The lattice structure shows a stable plastic deformation without a destructive fracture for the strut size of 2.00 mm.

Originality/value

The findings of this study can provide theoretical and experimental support for the choice of strut size under different stress conditions. In addition, they are conductive to in-depth study of the compressive properties for lattice structures with different geometrical dimensions fabricated by selective laser melting.

Purpose

Automated technologies have been applied to facility management (FM) practices to address labour demands of, and time consumed by, inputting and processing manual data. Less attention has been focussed on automation of visual information, such as images, when improving timely maintenance decisions. This study aims to develop image classification algorithms to improve information flow in the inspection-repair process through building information modelling (BIM).

Design/methodology/approach

To improve and automate the inspection-repair process, image classification algorithms were used to connect images with a corresponding image database in a BIM knowledge repository. Quick response (QR) code decoding and Bag of Words were chosen to classify images in the system. Graphical user interfaces (GUIs) were developed to facilitate activity collaboration and communication. A pilot case study in an inspection-repair process was applied to demonstrate the applications of this system.

Findings

The system developed in this study associates the inspection-repair process with a digital three-dimensional (3D) model, GUIs, a BIM knowledge repository and image classification algorithms. By implementing the proposed application in a case study, the authors found that improvement of the inspection-repair process and automated image classification with a BIM knowledge repository (such as the one developed in this study) can enhance FM practices by increasing productivity and reducing time and costs associated with ecision-making.

Originality/value

This study introduces an innovative approach that applies image classification and leverages a BIM knowledge repository to enhance the inspection-repair process in FM practice. The system designed provides automated image-classifying data from a smart phone, eliminates time required to input image data manually and improves communication and collaboration between FM personnel for maintenance in the decision-making process.
