Abstract

Considers the close regard that must be paid to the legal framework within which restaurants must operate, particularly town planning, licensing and other statutory controls. Queries the traditional ‘zoning′ approach and prefers a more universally applicable overall approach. Concludes that valuation on a direct comparison basis with nearby retail units often results in a value that bears no relationship to the reality of the market place for a specialised type of property.

Abstract

Purpose

This work aims to provide a report on adopting a consortial model of collaboration toward understanding digital preservation practice.

Design/methodology/approach

This work provides a case study detailing the work and outcomes of a digital preservation pilot project undertaken by the Five College Libraries between 2014 and 2015.

Findings

Digital preservation is a broad endeavor and rapidly developing facet of digital collections and institutional repositories; yet, it is often an area that is not fully understood or implemented by many libraries and archives, largely because institutions lack the necessary resources to do it alone. Working across institutional lines provides a possible solution to overcoming resource limitations and general challenges for pursuing robust digital preservation programs.

Research limitations/implications

Findings reported in this work are based on a limited-scope pilot project. Several questions laid out during the pilot remain unanswered at its close.

Originality/value

This paper provides insight into an experimental process rarely reported in library and information science literature. The goal of the paper is to provide a reference point for institutions pursuing a consortial approach to the challenges of applied digital preservation practice.

Abstract

Purpose

Many scholars and practitioners lament female pay gaps and the ethical issues they pose; yet several studies provide supporting evidence showing that the female CEOs earn more than men. However, other studies find an insignificant difference between male and female CEO pay. 10; The purpose of this study is to re-investigate this question to uncover the root of the divergent findings and thereby clarify our understanding of this important issue of CEOs’ gender pay gaps.

Design/methodology/approach

Evidence suggests the CEO position is at times a rare instance where typical pay gaps for female workers reverse such that these executives earn pay premiums. Recently, Gupta et al. (2018) called findings for female CEO pay premiums into question, failing to find differences despite using data similar to prior studies. The authors investigated the discrepant findings, identifying and showing that the use of an analytical approach to account for unobserved differences (i.e. fixed effects) are inappropriate for the data structure drives’ divergent findings. The authors also find that results are affected by the industries and time-frames used in the analyses.

Findings

The authors find that female CEOs outearn their male counterparts. However, the authors also show that the significance of results is affected by the industries and time-frames used in the analyses.

Originality/value

It is an original work that reexamines a somewhat controversial issue on the gender differences in CEO pay.

Abstract

Purpose

Disaster management agencies are mandated to reduce risk for the populations that they serve. Yet, inequities in how they function may result in their activities creating disaster risk, particularly for already vulnerable and marginalized populations. In this article, how disaster management agencies create disaster risk for vulnerable and marginalized groups is examined, seeking to show the ways existing policies affect communities, and provide recommendations on policy and future research.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors undertook a systematic review of the US disaster management agency, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), examining its programs through a lens of equity to understand how they shape disaster risk.

Findings

Despite a growing commitment to equity within FEMA, procedural, distributive, and contextual inequities result in interventions that perpetuate and amplify disaster risk for vulnerable and marginalized populations. Some of these inequities could be remediated by shifting toward a more bottom-up approach to disaster management, such as community-based disaster risk reduction approaches.

Practical implications

Disaster management agencies and other organizations can use the results of this study to better understand how to devise interventions in ways that limit risk creation for vulnerable populations, including through community-based approaches.

Originality/value

This study is the first to examine disaster risk creation from an organizational perspective, and the first to focus explicitly on how disaster management agencies can shape risk creation. This helps understand the linkages between disaster risk creation, equity and organizations.

“Since films attract an audience of millions, the need and appetite for information about them is enormous.” So said Harold Leonard in his introduction to The Film Index published in 1941. The 1970's has produced more than enough — too much — food to satisfy that appetite. In the past five years the number of reference books, in this context defined as encyclopedias, handbooks, directories, dictionaries, indexes and bibliographies, and the astounding number of volumes on individual directors, complete histories, genre history and analysis, published screenplays, critics' anthologies, biographies of actors and actresses, film theory, film technique and production and nostalgia, that have been published is overwhelming. The problem in film scholarship is not too little material but the senseless duplication of materials that already exist and the embarrassing output of items that are poorly or haphazardly researched, or perhaps should not have been written at all.

Abstract

Objective — On the basis of previous research funded by the NHS Executive into management education for clinicians it seemed possible that a gap existed between the house officers' perceptions or experience of the pre‐registration year and the educational objectives of the GMC. This study explores the nature of the gap between house officers' perceptions and the GMCs expectations. Design — Observation through job‐shadowing of two individual housemen covering surgery and medicine and in‐depth semi‐structured interviews. Setting — Five hospitals in five regions of which three are teaching hospitals. Subjects — Twenty houseman comprising ten from medicine and ten from surgery, four ward nurses, a Trust Hospital Chief Executive, two Medical Directors, one clinical tutor and a clinical sub dean. Conclusions —The picture of haphazard training and education opportunities of pre‐registration house officers suggests that there are two fundamental problems to be addressed. One is, how best to generate a sense of ‘ownership’ by and ‘affinity’ to a corporate organisation. The second is even more fundamental and requires a strategic review of the purpose of the pre‐registration year and strongly suggests the desirability of re‐profiling the house officers job in order to close the gap between expectations and the reality of current experience and produce better medicine.

Abstract

Shortcomings in the BRS MENTOR mainframe interface and the desirability of using the workstation capabilities of the PC were factors in the decision to develop and implement a microcomputer‐based interface to the BRS software and associated databases. The Interface Design Subcommittee's charge was to design and implement the interface components for the Library Information Workstation, a microcomputer public terminal that provides access to local and remote online catalogs, periodical index databases, campus information resources, and information files stored on the microcomputer. This article focuses on the design of the interface to the BRS/SEARCH software and ancillary periodical index databases—initially Current Contents, six Wilson databases, and ERIC.
