Abstract

Purpose

The assessment of patient safety culture (PSC) is a major priority for healthcare providers. It is often realized using quantitative approaches (questionnaires) separately from qualitative ones (patient safety culture maturity model (PSCMM)). These approaches suffer from certain major limits. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to overcome these limits and to propose a novel approach to PSC assessment.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed approach consists of evaluating PSC in a set of healthcare establishments (HEs) using the HSOPSC questionnaire. After that, principal component analysis (PCA) and K-means algorithm were applied on PSC dimensional scores in order to aggregate them into macro dimensions. The latter were used to overcome the limits of PSC dimensional assessment and to propose a quantitative PSCMM.

Findings

PSC dimensions are grouped into three macro dimensions. Their capitalization permits their association with safety actors related to PSC promotion. Consequently, a quantitative PSC maturity matrix was proposed. Problematic PSC dimensions for the studied HEs are “Non-punitive response to error”, “Staffing”, “Communication openness”. Their PSC maturity level was found underdeveloped due to a managerial style that favors a “blame culture”.

Originality/value

A combined quali-quantitative assessment framework for PSC was proposed in the present study as recommended by a number of researchers but, to the best of our knowledge, few or no studies were devoted to it. The results can be projected for improvement and accreditation purposes, where different PSC stakeholders can be implicated as suggested by international standards.

The purpose of this paper is to propose a new managerial method to integrate the environmental dimension in the domino effects (DEs) analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a new managerial method to integrate the environmental dimension in the domino effects (DEs) analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed method is a three-step approach: identification of primary hazards in the form of potential events causing the DE, a mixed quantification (deterministic and probabilistic) of the risk of the DEs with a view to its control and capitalizing the results from the BLEVESOFT software as well as those relating to the probability of occurrence of the DEs in the form of a prioritized action plan dedicated to surrounding environments (proximity territory).

Findings

The primary hazards are technologically manageable at the studied system but are unpredictable if triggered at the environmental subsystem because they are difficult to be managed and often cause panic, which is a form of a very catastrophic DE.

Research limitations/implications

The research could affect members of the engineering and construction industry, and can be applied in several domains since it studies the DE phenomenon. which is a common problem especially in industrials plants.

Practical implications

The proposal method is applied in an industrial terminal in Algeria.

Originality/value

This paper presents an exploratory study of using a new managerial method that aims to combine the potentialities of geomatic sciences that allow the spatial representation of nearby territories to assess the severity of DEs through a deterministic approach, and the modeling of DEs as well as their analysis by a probabilistic approach.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the environmental behaviour of the Algerian firms, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, showing how the involvement of stakeholders may change this behaviour.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to set the environmental quality management (EQM), the paper has first been inspired by a mobilisation grid which has allowed the authors to evaluate the degree of dialogue between the stakeholders and the SONATRACH Group which constitutes the case study. Then, the various interviews held at the six sites of this group have allowed to determine the percentage rate of the stakeholders’ mobilisation.

Findings

The suggested approach highlights two field studies. First, the aim was to check the mobilisation of the stakeholders of the SONATRACH Group. Then, in order to confirm the importance of mobilising the stakeholders for a better environmental integration, the authors had to evaluate the EQM by measuring the response rate of these stakeholders in percentages.

Research limitations/implications

The contribution makes it possible to emphasise the contribution of stakeholder theory in environmental construction based on the mobilisation of stakeholders.

Practical implications

In Algeria, some production sites are ranked as polluting. For this research work, the paper has chosen the sites of the SONATRACH multinational. Being conscious of the importance of integrating the environmental dimension, the group has carried out real changes by involving all stakeholders.

Originality/value

The objective of this paper is to show the importance of mobilising the stakeholders who play a role in resolving economic and/or environmental issues to help the Algerian firms improve their environmental situation.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to focus on environmental management and is part of a persistent operation of industrial enterprises. This context is justified by the fact that, despite taking the value of environmental management, many Algerian enterprises fail to ensure integration of environmental considerations into their business activities.

Design/methodology/approach

It is a proposal of a method for corporate environmental policy through the allocation of the global environmental goal.

Findings

The method of allocation of the global environmental goal proposed is based on the criticality of the environmental risk that must make it acceptable or tolerable. The allocation principle used is based on a judicious choice of the weight allowance with reference to the criticality grid of environmental risks.

Practical implications

The method of allocation of the global environmental goal is a valuable help to Algerian companies to ensure better integration of the environment into production, especially Algerian cement factories known for their polluting activities.

Originality/value

The method of allocation of the global environmental goal is framed by the proposed GRAI approach and especially by its concept of “period-horizon” which can enhance the contribution of the proposed method, especially to the planning decisions for achieving the global environmental goal.

The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the reality of environmental management as experienced by an Algerian company while in the process of being certified.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the reality of environmental management as experienced by an Algerian company while in the process of being certified.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach adopted focuses on how the environmental dimension is perceived by the wage earners of the company. The perception of the environmental dimension is highlighted by means of a statistical analysis supported by the use of data processing software.

Findings

The results show that all staff categories agree that the environmental aspect is to some extent neglected compared to other aspects and that production comes at the forefront.

Practical implications

The analysis of the results highlights the course that should be followed by any Algerian company, such as the one selected in our study, in order to implement the ISO 14001 certification successfully.

Originality/value

The interesting focus of the paper is in the human aspect, which plays a major role in any successful environmental management system
