Case overview

Legacy and succession issues plague rising economies. Attracting the local talent to stay is becoming increasingly difficult. This is especially the case for the family run businesses and also local government lead industries. Many MNCs have to bring in their own qualified staff making that an added cost and a disincentive to work in Malaysia. Thus, Malaysia has been experiencing a brain drain. The case study explores the generational differences in retaining staff and the challenges of a global demand and war for top talent. This affects emerging economies that are competing to keep their top talent from being lured away by their competitors. Brain drain is occurring in almost all sectors, but the Malaysian accountancy sector is the most affected. In view of this issue, this case addresses the common challenges facing accounting firms which is talent management and succession planning. Expected learning outcomes

This case is the basis for class discussion and group presentations. Students will be able to understand generational differences, apply strategies to recruit and retain high-potential talent, and develop awareness of issues regarding Generation Y in Asia.

Abstract

Fingerhut, based in Minnetonka, Minnesota, is a direct-marketing company that sells a smorgasbord of consumer goods through an array of specially targeted catalogs. In November 1996, an article in the Star Tribune, a major Minneapolis newspaper, drew attention to a class-action lawsuit pending against Fingerhut that suggests the firm made its profits by exploiting the poor. Several civil rights groups rallied around the suit and submitted amicus curiae in favor of the litigation. The case illustrates issues in ethics and management communication. Discussions focus on the constituencies. Is Fingerhut exploiting its customers or providing them with an affordable method of obtaining valued consumer goods on credit? Do retailers have a duty to offer products at reasonable prices? Are the high interest rates reasonable given the risk? What are the options: pawn shops, rent-to-own? What is the profile of the typical Fingerhut customer? Discussions also focus on the issues communicating to the constituencies. How much damage will the lawsuit do to Fingerhut's image as an ethical, socially conscious company? What communication strategies can the firm employ? Should it react to the lawsuit? What should it tell its employees?

Abstract

Development of legitimate teaching cases demands cases be factual, that is that they use “real people, real companies, real situations,” and, usually, present time. Rarely, do cases deal with historical happenings in which lives, as well as fortunes, could be lost to achieve desired ends. History provides rich material on which to build teaching cases with the added advantage of acquainting students with the past and the influence the past has in shaping the future. Answers to the question of “Why use historical teaching cases” are related to the more general question of “Why study history.” Both questions are addressed.
