Abstract
Purpose
The introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in the Global South brings tremendous potential for both good and harm. This paper aims to highlight the guiding ethical principles and normative frameworks for the ethical use of AI in the lens of the traditional Ga (a tribe in Ghana) philosophy and add to the academic literature and research on AI and ethics within the African context.
Design/methodology/approach
Literature overview on the African philosophy of Ga tradition as applied to AI and application of it to the AI4people ethical framework for a good AI society.
Findings
Existing principles in AI are based on and mostly influenced by western principles, which may give rise to biases in AI outcomes and design implications in Africa. The research finds a high degree of overlap in the AI4People ethical framework for a good AI society and the Ga philosophy.
Research limitations/implications
There are a few existing literatures on AI ethics in Africa and on Ga philosophy.
Originality/value
This research offers valuable contribution to the ongoing discourse of Africa’s adoption of AI and widens the debate on AI and ethics beyond the western ethical approaches.

Aptly named AI: Powering Sustainable Innovation in Higher Ed delves into the transformative power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a catalytic force driving comprehensive disruption in Higher Education (AIEd). We begin with an overview of the foundational role AI plays as an enabling technology, reshaping traditional educational paradigms. Through an exploration of intelligent tutoring systems, personalised learning pathways and adaptive assessment tools, we analyse how AI tailors educational experiences to individual needs, fostering a dynamic and personalised learning environment. This chapter scrutinises the challenges and opportunities posed by AI in bridging educational disparities, facilitating access to quality education and fostering inclusive learning environments. Additionally, it analyses the ethical considerations and societal implications inherent in the proliferation of AI-driven educational technologies, probing the delicate balance between innovation and ethical responsibility. Drawing on case studies and empirical evidence, this chapter examines the nuanced impact of AI on emerging markets, elucidating its potential to revolutionise educational ecosystems in regions with distinct sociocultural dynamics and infrastructural limitations. It explores how AI-powered educational tools and platforms can catalyse educational advancements, empower marginalised communities and drive economic growth in these markets. In conclusion, this chapter offers insights into the future trajectory of AI-driven educational disruption, emphasising the need for collaboration between academia, industry and policymakers to navigate the evolving landscape. We conclude by envisioning a future where AI- driven educational technologies play a pivotal role in reshaping the educational landscape, fostering innovation and empowering learners worldwide.
