Abstract

The structure of the economy continues to change; where once they are dependent on the productivity of a manual workforce, companies increasingly depend on the productivity of knowledge workers. Today, knowledge workers account for more than two‐thirds of the workforce, and thus should be the focus of strategic plans to improve productivity. Currently there are no universally accepted methods to measure knowledge worker productivity, or even generally accepted categories. This paper provides a taxonomy of knowledge worker productivity measurements, and identifies a number of productivity dimensions that are used to categorize the findings of previous research. Also describes the relative density of discussions along these dimensions and identifies critical areas for future research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a definition of modern configuration for a medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle (MALE UAV) and its on-board systems to obtain a suitable basis for future definitions such as a possible logistic support configuration first hypothesis.

Design/methodology/approach

Starting from high-level requirements, both the UAV conceptual design and on-board systems preliminary design have been carried out through proprietary tools. Then, some peculiarities from previous studies, such as systems advanced UAV alternative energy, have been maintained and confirmed (diesel propulsion and energy storage system).

Findings

The improvement of a component of an aircraft can play a relevant role in the whole system. In the paper, it is considered how a concept of MALE UAV can evolve (this topic is considered by the authors since many years) by incorporating advanced on-board systems concepts.

Practical implications

The numerical results promote and support the use of advanced on-board system solutions and architectures to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and performance of MALE UAVs.

Originality/value

Usually, conceptual and preliminary design phases analyze in-depth the aerodynamic and structural solutions and aircraft performance. In this study, the authors aim to focus on the advanced on-board systems for MALE UAVs. This kind of aircraft is not yet a mature concept, with very few operating machines and many projects in the development phase.

Abstract

The recent social and economic changes have resulted in a polarization of product standardization. While some products are constantly demanded to be of internationally recognized standards, others are increasingly required to cater for the needs of individual customers. A growing number of manufacturers serving the latter market are therefore being pushed into a Non‐standard Route Manufacturing (NSRM) situation where product volatility is the norm. Common problems facing these firms include marketing strategies, product costing, and corporate business planning. Under the circumstances product classification is identified as an effective tool to tackle these problems. Based on dissection theory, proposes a Cost Based Product Classification (CBPC) system. The establishment of a CBPC system consists of two major stages, system design and system use. Following a step‐by‐step guide, includes a practical example demonstrating how a system of this kind may be implemented.

Abstract

The effects of temperature gradients across the belt width on fired resistor values are well known and become increasingly important in wide belt production conveyor furnaces. This paper discusses the experimental and theoretical study of this problem. Physical data were collected from experiments and the results were analysed statistically. Particular attention was paid to the exit end firing zone because heat losses from this zone differ from that of the other zones. High resistor values at the centre of the belt, gradually decreasing towards both sides, have been observed. This phenomenon seems to be caused by loss of heat radiation to the exit opening at the belt centre. Mathematical models using the basic laws of heat transfer as they apply to the particular structure of the furnace have been developed. The study shows that it is possible to reduce the range of fired thick film resistor values by modifying the temperature conditions near the end zone.

Abstract

This paper presents the results of a series of tests made in order to validate the magneto‐thermal module of the new FLUX3D v3.40. The tool was conceived to solve the coupled problems of electromagnetic and thermal phenomena. The solving method of the program considers a thermal‐transient problem during a certain period of time and it solves, at each time step, the thermal and electromagnetic equations (in quasi‐stationary magneto‐harmonic formulation), alternatively. We have modelled the inductive longitudinal welding of steel pipes. The results of 3D simulations are compared with measurements on a laboratory device.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the common issues affecting the cultural institutions’ websites in terms of organic search visibility and to detect if there are some category specifics for the national libraries, archives and museums.

Design/methodology/approach

In the first phase, an online survey was conducted involving the cultural institutions of national importance, aiming to map the current state of their websites in organizational and functional terms, to collect the information about the used domains, their social media activity and the use of analytical tools to monitor the visitor behavior and online traffic. In the second phase, the cultural institutions’ websites were analyzed using the “White Hat SEO” technics of optimization on Google.

Findings

From the category perspective, the historical archives have the best Technical search engine optimization (SEO) position due to the low coding errors and fair site speed, the libraries are leading in content generation and the museums have a very good total SEO index due to their strong social media activities. Common issues are detected in the description of web images, non-existence of sitemaps and low website mobile friendliness.

Research limitations/implications

The data were collected from the personnel of the national cultural institutions based on their pre-assumed knowledge and understanding of website management.

Practical implications

The research methodology can be used to analyze the organic visibility of any national culture on search engines.

Originality/value

A research gap in addressing the cultural institutions’ websites from the search engine perspective was identified and addressed within the paper.
