Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a deformable two-wheel-like mobile mechanism based on overconstrained mechanism, with the abilities of fast rolling and obstacle surmounting. The drive torque of the multi-mode motions is generated by self-deformation. Moreover, the analyses of feasibility and locomotivity of two mobile modes are presented.

Design/methodology/approach

The main body of the two-wheel-like mobile mechanism is a kind of centrally driven 4 R linkages. The mobile mechanism can achieve the capabilities of fast rolling and obstacle surmounting through integrating two mobile modes (spherical-like rolling mode and polyhedral-like obstacle-surmounting mode) and can switch to the corresponding mode to move or surmount obstacles. The mobility and kinematics of the mobile modes are analyzed.

Findings

Based on the results of kinematics analysis and dynamics analysis of the wheel-like mechanism, the spherical-like rolling mode has the capability of fast rolling, and the polyhedral-like obstacle-surmounting mode has the capability of surmounting different obstacle heights by two submodes (quasi-static obstacle-surmounting submode and dynamic obstacle-surmounting submode). The proposed concept is verified by experiments on a physical prototype.

Originality/value

The work presented in this paper is a novel exploration to apply bar linkages in the field of scout. The two-wheel-like mobile mechanism improves the torque imbalance of bar linkages by centrally driven method, removes the rear support structures of the traditional two-wheeled mechanisms by self-deformation and increases the height of obstacle surmounting by mode switching angle.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the inclusion effects of the linearized time‐varying J2‐perturbed terms for relative accuracy increase significantly over Melton's problem.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology is based on the previous studies provided by Ross's paper. He gives a set of equations based on the CW equations which incorporates the J2 gravitational perturbations and states in his introduction that this method can be expanded for the elliptical reference orbits as described by Melton.

Findings

One challenge in implementing the relative motions is maintaining the relations as it experiences gravitational perturbations, most notably due to non‐spherical Earth. Simulation results show that the inclusion of time‐varying J2 perturbation terms in the derived linear equations increased the accuracy of the solution significantly in the out‐of‐orbit‐plane direction, while the accuracy within the orbit plane remained roughly unchanged.

Practical implications

By reason of replacing approximate terms (e, M) in this solution, for continues accuracy increase of time‐varying parameters containing θ(t) and RO(t), this solution could be useful in the element‐errors evaluation and analysis of orbital multiple rendezvous missions, that are involved to the limited orbit periods.

Originality/value

The originality of this paper is to develop Melton's researches. He provided a method for generalizing the linear equations of motion to an elliptical orbit which enabled the determination of a time‐explicit, approximate solution. In this regard, there is no paper which has evaluated the inclusion effects of the linearized time‐varying J2 perturbation terms over Melton's equations with such an approach.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to achieve the optimal system design of a four-wheel mobile robot on transmission line maintenance, as the authors know transmission line mobile robot is a kind of special robot which runs on high-voltage cable to replace or assist manual power maintenance operation. In the process of live working, the manipulator, working end effector and the working environment are located in the narrow space and with heterogeneous shapes, the robot collision-free obstacle avoidance movement is the premise to complete the operation task. In the simultaneous operation, the mechanical properties between the manipulator effector and the operation object are the key to improve the operation reliability. These put forward higher requirements for the mechanical configuration and dynamic characteristics of the robot, and this is the purpose of the manuscript.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the above, aiming at the task of tightening the tension clamp for the four-split transmission lines, the paper proposed a four-wheel mobile robot mechanism configuration and its terminal tool which can adapt to the walking and operation on multi-split transmission lines. In the study, the dynamic models of the rigid robot and flexible transmission line are established, respectively, and the dynamic model of rigid-flexible coupling system is established on this basis, the working space and dynamic characteristics of the robot have been simulated in ADAMS and MATLAB.

Findings

The research results show that the mechanical configuration of this robot can complete the tightening operation of the four-split tension clamp bolts and the motion of robot each joint meets the requirements of driving torque in the operation process, which avoids the operation failure of the robot system caused by the insufficient or excessive driving force of the robot joint torque.

Originality/value

Finally, the engineering practicability of the mechanical configuration and dynamic model proposed in the paper has been verified by the physical prototype. The originality value of the research is that it has double important theoretical significance and practical application value for the optimization of mechanical structure parameters and electrical control parameters of transmission line mobile robots.

Abstract

Purpose

In the last two decades with the rapid development of nonlinear science, there has appeared ever‐increasing interest of scientists and engineers in the analytical techniques for nonlinear problems. This paper considers linear and nonlinear systems that are not only regarded as general boundary value problems, but also are used as mathematical models in viscoelastic and inelastic flows. The purpose of this paper is to present the application of the homotopy‐perturbation method (HPM) and variational iteration method (VIM) to solve some boundary value problems in structural engineering and fluid mechanics.

Design/methodology/approach

Two new but powerful analytical methods, namely, He's VIM and HPM, are introduced to solve some boundary value problems in structural engineering and fluid mechanics.

Findings

Analytical solutions often fit under classical perturbation methods. However, as with other analytical techniques, certain limitations restrict the wide application of perturbation methods, most important of which is the dependence of these methods on the existence of a small parameter in the equation. Disappointingly, the majority of nonlinear problems have no small parameter at all. Furthermore, the approximate solutions solved by the perturbation methods are valid, in most cases, only for the small values of the parameters. In the present study, two powerful analytical methods HPM and VIM have been employed to solve the linear and nonlinear elastic beam deformation problems. The results reveal that these new methods are very effective and simple and do not require a large computer memory and can also be used for solving linear and nonlinear boundary value problems.

Originality/value

The results revealed that the VIM and HPM are remarkably effective for solving boundary value problems. These methods are very promoting methods which can be wildly utilized for solving mathematical and engineering problems.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to design a reliable multi-level, multi-product and multi-period location-inventory-routing three-echelon supply chain network, which considers disruption risks and uncertainty in the inventory system.

Design/methodology/approach

A robust optimization approach is used to deal with the effects of uncertainty, and a mixed-integer nonlinear programming multi-objective model is proposed. The first objective function seeks to minimize inventory costs, such as ordering costs, holding costs and carrying costs. It also helps to choose one of the two modes of bearing the expenses of shortage or using the excess capacity to produce at the expense of each. The second objective function seeks to minimize the risk of disruption in distribution centers and suppliers, thereby increasing supply chain reliability. As the proposed model is an non-deterministic polynomial-time-hard model, the Lagrangian relaxation algorithm is used to solve it.

Findings

The proposed model is applied to a real supply chain in the aftermarket automotive service industry. The results of the model and the current status of the company under study are compared, and suggestions are made to improve the supply chain performance. Using the proposed model, companies are expected to manage the risk of supply chain disruptions and pay the lowest possible costs in the event of a shortage. They can also use reverse logistics to minimize environmental damage and use recycled goods.

Originality/value

In this paper, the problem definition is based on a real case; it is about the deficiencies in the after-sale services in the automobile industry. It considers the disruption risk at the first level of the supply chain, selects the supplier considering the parameters of price and disruption risk and examines surplus capacity over distributors’ nominal capacity.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of this paper is to develop a traffic demand forecasting model specifically on international sectors from the USA. Also, in this paper, the authors formulate the service positioning matrix (SPM) that enables airlines to accurately position their services and improve their process efficiency.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the authors explore international sectors and present a traffic demand model specifically for the same. The distribution of demand is assumed to follow a normal distribution and non‐service variables are introduced in the model. The behavior of the passenger has been captured by deriving the zonal income function. The variables have been drawn from microeconomic theory and the traditional gravity model of physics. The key innovations of the paper are fusion of the gravity model and microeconomic theory to develop the traffic demand model, and transformation of income to zonal income by deriving the aggregate zonal demand function; and development of a service positioning matrix for the airline industry.

Findings

In this paper, first, the authors have presented a conceptual model for demand forecasting through usage of zonal income. Second, in recognition of the value add the firm receives by identifying the nature of service and derived customer satisfaction levels, the authors have presented the SPM – a framework to help service providers to position themselves on any one of the four defined states. The empirical work is underway to solidify the conceptions and would provide a robust route demand forecasting model for international route contemplation for airlines operating from the USA and a service positioning matrix.

Originality/value

Although many airline companies and professional bodies are involved in developing forecasts of air transport demand, detailed analysis of the characteristics of demand for air transport over long‐haul or international routes are less researched. This paper attempts to provide a framework for the airlines to forecast demand specifically on international routes operated from major metros of the USA and position their services by designing the service positioning matrix. The model fuses concepts from physics and micro‐economics to enhance the forecasting capabilities. Major benefits include route contemplation, effective fleet scheduling, decisions on aircraft and fuel purchases, improving service efficiency and developing optimal fare policies.

Abstract

Purpose

With the widespread use of the composites over other metallic materials in different fields of engineering, studies on damages of composite structures have assumed great importance. Among various kinds of damages, delamination is of very serious concern to composite applications. It may arise as a consequence of impact loading, stress concentration near a geometrical or material discontinuity or manufacturing defects. The presence of one or more delaminations in the composite laminate may lead to a premature collapse of the structure due to buckling at a lower level of compressive loading. So the effect of delamination on stability of composite structures needs attention and thus constitutes a problem of current interest. The purpose of this paper is to deal with both numerical and experimental investigations on buckling behaviour of single and multiple, delaminated, industry driven, woven roving glass/epoxy composite plates on clamped free clamped free (CFCF) rectangular plates.

Design/methodology/approach

For numerical analysis, a finite element model was developed with an eight noded two dimensional quadratic isoparametric element having five degrees of freedom per node. The elastic stiffness matrices were derived using linear first order shear deformation theory with a shear correction factor. Green's nonlinear strain equations are used to derive the geometric stiffness matrix. The computation of buckling load based on present formulation is compared with the experimental results for the effect of different parameters on critical load of the delaminated composite panels. In the experimental study, the influences of various parameters such as delamination area, fiber orientations, number of layers, aspect ratios on the buckling behaviour of single and multiple delaminated woven roving glass/epoxy composite plates were investigated. Buckling loads were measured by INSTRON 1195 machine for the delaminated composite plates.

Findings

Comparison of numerical results with experimental results showed a good agreement. Both the results revealed that the area of delaminations, fiber orientations, number of layers and aspect ratio have paramount influence on the buckling behaviour of delaminated plate.

Originality/value

The present study is part of Jayaram Mohanty's doctoral thesis, an original research work.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper presents the results of work on control systems of bearingless electric motors. Authors proposed the applications of bearingless electric machines for aircraft actuation system. Suggested solution characterizes novel concept of on-board equipment design such as More Electric Aircraft. Magnetic suspension technology allows elimination of friction force and the negative performance features of classic bearing system. However, to achieve all these purposes appropriately, dedicated control system must be also applied.

Design/methodology/approach

The development of a control system of bearingless electric machine is presented in detail. Mathematical model and construction of induction bearingless motor are widely discussed. Then, proportional–integral-derivative controller algorithm designing for BEM control system was presented using the well pole placement method. Simulation model of BEM control system with use of Matlab-Simulink software was shown. Finally, experimental studies on laboratory stand were introduced. The paper presents design methodology of conventional and advanced control system of bearingless motor.

Findings

The presented concept of the bearingless electric machines could be applied in the on-board actuation system. During research, full control system of bearingless electric motor was designed and tested. This system consisted of two subsystems. The first responded for rotary speed stabilization and second one was designed for position control of the rotor in the air gap.

Abstract

Purpose

In this article, the authors consider the following nonlinear singular boundary value problem (SBVP) known as Lane–Emden equations, −u″(t)-(α/t) u′(t) = g(t, u), 0 < t < 1 where α ≥ 1 subject to two-point and three-point boundary conditions. The authors propose to develop a novel method to solve the class of Lane–Emden equations.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors improve the modified variation iteration method (VIM) proposed in [JAAC, 9(4) 1242–1260 (2019)], which greatly accelerates the convergence and reduces the computational task.

Findings

The findings revealed that either exact or highly accurate approximate solutions of Lane–Emden equations can be computed with the proposed method.

Originality/value

Novel modification is made in the VIM that provides either exact or highly accurate approximate solutions of Lane-Emden equations, which does not exist in the literature.
