TUESDAY to Friday, the 21st to 24th of this month, will be busy ones in Dublin when the Irish Work Study Institute entertains the members of the 7th European Work Study Federation Conference. The preliminary work of organization has been tackled with due recognition of the occasion's importance. Many meetings, much work and a lot of study are part of the price which has been gladly paid by the Irish Institute to ensure that everything runs smoothly.

Through this case, participants will be able to:

▪ understand the different approaches to preparing operating budgets;

▪ classify the costs based on traceability to its cost centres;

▪ understand the difference in budget preparation and its analysis under different cost centres;

▪ put together the required information, identify the format and prepare major operating budgets; and

▪ evaluate operating budgets and give suggestions to the company based on budget analysis.

This case is about a manufacturing company that is going to introduce a budgeting system. It highlights the process of information collecting from key employees for budget preparation. This case also deals with various decisions to be made during the implementation of the new system such as the context of budgets, cost units and sequence of budgets.This case will help students to enhance their understanding of the operating budgets. The students will able to visualize the difficulty faced by companies to implement a new system.

This case is applicable in the courses such as Master of Business Administration, Master of Commerce or other postgraduate studies. This can also be discussed in professional courses such as Chartered Accountants, Certified Management Accountants, Company Secretaries, Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India and Chartered Financial Analysts.

PROGRAMME Evaluation and Review Technique, familiarly known as PERT, is a vital subject which is growing rapidly. Recognition of this drew an interested audience to a symposium at Keele University on July 13, when 14 companies contributed papers on different aspects of critical path‐planning techniques and their experience as users in such disparate fields as shipbuilding, aviation, nuclear and civil engineering, the chemical and electrical industries, and management consultancy.

FOR some time industry has been preoccupied with the question of management. It is generally agreed that in the United States the services of management consultants are engaged by at least 75 % of the principal industrial enterprises, hospitals and chief educational establishments. In this country, too, there is growing reliance on the same kind of aid.

IT is a tradition that journals of almost every type, as a New Year becomes imminent, should express optimism concerning if not the future as a whole, at least as far as the year to come is concerned. Would that be justified as we approach the eighties?

COMPARISONS are often made between the way in which Britain utilises its manpower and the manner in which it is deployed by other major industrial nations. They are generally unfavourable to this country. To recognise the existence of a problem is wise; to devise means to overcome it, especially when it is of such magnitude, is even wiser.

This study examines the use of selected management accounting techniques by a sample of large and medium sized Saudi manufacturing companies. The analysis revealed that the vast majority of management accounting techniques that are the focus of this study are used. Traditional management accounting techniques are perceived to be important and are heavily used by participant companies. Although new management accounting techniques, such as ABC and JIT, are used by a limited number of participants, the result is in line with those reported by studies conducted in some developed countries.

A growing body of literature suggests that creating a just sustainable society will require reorganizing economic arrangements and, in particular, rethinking work. Previous studies have recognized alternative organizations, such as cooperatives and intentional communities, as sites for building more democratic, sustainable models of work. This study contributes a description and analysis of work and sustainability at Twin Oaks Intentional Community, an 80-person income- and resource-sharing commune in Louisa, Virginia. Some measures show that Twin Oaks members live more sustainably in terms of energy consumption than the average US resident. In this article, I investigate the relationship between sustainability and work at Twin Oaks. I find that sustainable work is linked to the following key principles: broadening definitions of work, prioritizing community well-being, and democratizing decision making. In doing so, I contribute to previous literature on work, sustainability, and alternative organizations by suggesting that (1) sustainability in intentional communities is deeply intertwined with systems of work; (2) broadening definitions of work to include social reproductive labour contributes to sustainability; and (3) the democratization of work can further goals of sustainability.

THE British Motor Corporation has taken an important step in setting up a new centre to give a thorough training in modern management and techniques to many of its own people. Of course, Haseley Manor, the Corporation's staff college for almost ten years, has done much to weld together the constituent companies which make up the parent body and it created a climate of good management during a period of rapid growth.

The purpose of this paper is to assess different labor hiring policies for construction projects using system dynamics (SD) which have a considerable impact on project performance. Time intervals and work crew composition are two such policies. Through the implementation of a variety of policies, a managerial opportunity presents itself for the effective allocation of human resources and improvement in project performance.

The study developed a dynamic model to assess different labor hiring policies using SD based on literature. To further distinguish between findings, the effects of the applied policies on performance were considered using earned value management. Based on a real case for validating the model, the paper discusses the potential benefits of the model, including: having a systematic and holistic view, considering dynamic the labor need and allocation, identifying alternative strategies for performance improvement and simulating the reality of the projects in a virtual model.

The achieved simulation results show how different hiring policies affect project performance. This research model can aid decision makers to assess labor hiring policies in various time intervals with different compositions and assist them in selecting the best policies for effective implementation of project.

The proposed model would be a major attempt using SD to model labor hiring policies more accurate in construction projects performance. In fact, an accurate estimate of labor needed, along with the proper planning and implementing of various labor hiring policies, presents a managerial opportunity whereby the effective allocation of workforces can be optimized leading to drastic improvement in project performance.
