Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve the volume-averaged models for free convection flow in porous media.

Design/methodology/approach

A pore scale simulation is conducted against which an independent volume-averaged solver is fine-tuned.

Findings

Micro and macro scale results can merge if proper choice of local thermal non-equilibrium and thermal dispersion models are selected. This depends on the range of Ra values investigated.

Originality/value

This is the first time a work like this is published in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

A combination of highly conductive porous media and nanofluids is an efficient way for improving thermal performance of relevant applications. For precisely predicting the flow and thermal transport of nanofluids in porous media, the purpose of this paper is to explore the inter-phase coupling numerical methods.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method, this study combines the convective flow, non-equilibrium thermal transport and phase interactions of nanofluids in porous matrix and proposes a new multi-phase LB model. The micro-scale momentum and heat interactions are especially analyzed for nanoparticles, base fluid and solid matrix. A set of three-phase LB equations for the flow/thermal coupling of base fluid, nanoparticles and solid matrix is established.

Findings

Distributions of nanoparticles, velocities for nanoparticles and the base fluid, temperatures for three phases and interaction forces are analyzed in detail. Influences of parameters on the nanofluid convection in the porous matrix are examined. Thermal resistance of nanofluid convective transport in porous structures are comprehensively discussed with the models of multi-phases. Results show that the Rayleigh number and the Darcy number have significant influences on the convective characteristics. The result with the three-phase model is mildly larger than that with the local thermal non-equilibrium model.

Originality/value

This paper first creates the multi-phase theoretical model for the complex coupling process of nanofluids in porous structures, which is useful for researchers and technicians in fields of thermal science and computational fluid dynamics.

Abstract

Purpose

In this work, a new two-phase version of the finite element-based Artificial Compressibility (AC) Characteristic-Based Split (CBS) algorithm is developed and applied for the first time to heat and mass transfer phenomena in porous media with associated phase change. The purpose of this study is to provide an alternative for the theoretical analysis and numerical simulation of multiphase transport phenomena in porous media. Traditionally, the more complex Separate Flow Model was used in which the vapour and liquid phases were considered as distinct fluids and mathematically described by the conservation laws for each phase separately, resulting in a large number of governing equations.

Design/methodology/approach

Even though the adopted mathematical model presents analogies with the conventional multicomponent mixture flow model, it is characterized by a considerable reduction in the number of the differential equations for the primary variables. The fixed-grid numerical formulation can be applied to the resolution of general problems that may simultaneously include a superheated vapour region, a two-phase zone and a sub-cooled liquid region in a single physical domain with irregular and moving phase interfaces in between. The local thermal non-equilibrium model is introduced to consider the heat exchange between fluid and solid within the porous matrix.

Findings

The numerical model is verified considering the transport phenomena in a homogenous and isotropic porous medium in which water is injected from one side and heated from the other side, where it leaves the computational domain in a superheated vapour state. Dominant forces are represented by capillary interactions and two-phase heat conduction. The obtained results have been compared with the numerical data available in the scientific literature.

Social implications

The present algorithm provides a powerful routine tool for the numerical modelling of complex two-phase transport processes in porous media.

Originality/value

For the first time, the stabilized AC-CBS scheme is applied to the resolution of compressible viscous flow transport in porous materials with associated phase change. A properly stabilized matrix inversion-free procedure employs an adaptive local time step that allows acceleration of the solution process even in the presence of large source terms and low diffusion coefficients values (near the phase change point).

Abstract

Purpose

The onset of convection in a ferrofluid-saturated porous layer has been investigated using a local thermal nonequilibrium (LTNE) model by allowing the solid phase to transfer heat via a Cattaneo heat flux theory while the fluid phase to transfer heat via usual Fourier heat-transfer law. The flow in the porous medium is governed by modified Brinkman-extended Darcy model. The instability of the system is discussed exactly for stress-free boundaries, while for rigid-ferromagnetic/paramagnetic boundaries the results are obtained numerically using the Galerkin method. The presence of Cattaneo effect introduces oscillatory convection as the preferred mode of instability contrary to the occurrence of instability via stationary convection found in its absence. Besides, oscillatory ferroconvection is perceived when the solid thermal relaxation time parameter exceeds a threshold value and increase in its value is to hasten the oscillatory onset. The effect of different boundary conditions on the instability of the system is noted to be qualitatively same. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The investigators would follow the procedure of Straughan (2013) to obtain the expression for Rayleigh number. The Brinkman-extended Darcy model is used to describe the flow in a porous medium. The investigators have used a Galerkin method to obtain the numerical results for rigid-ferromagnetic/paramagnetic boundaries, while the instability of the system is discussed exactly for stress-free boundaries.

Findings

The Cattaneo–LTNE porous ferroconvection has been analyzed for different velocity and magnetic boundary conditions. The Brinkman-extended Darcy model is used to describe the flow in a porous medium. The effect of different types of velocity and magnetic boundary conditions on the instability of the system has been highlighted. The instability of the system is discussed exactly for stress-free boundaries, while for rigid-ferromagnetic/paramagnetic boundaries the results are obtained numerically using the Galerkin method.

Originality/value

The novelty of the present paper is to combine LTNE and second sound effects in solids on thermal instability of a ferrofluid-saturated porous layer by retaining the usual Fourier heat-transfer law in the ferrofluid. The Brinkman-extended Darcy model is used to describe the flow in a porous medium. The effect of different types of velocity and magnetic boundary conditions on the instability of the system is discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to numerically analyze the mixed convection and entropy generation in an annulus with a rotating heated inner cylinder for single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT)–water nanofluid flow using local thermal nonequilibrium (LTNE) model. An examination of the system behavior is presented considering the heat-generating solid phase inside the porous layer partly filled at the inner surface of the outer cylinder.

Design/methodology/approach

The discretized governing equations for nanofluid and porous layer by means of the finite volume method are solved by using the SIMPLE algorithm.

Findings

It is found that the buoyancy force and rotational effect have an important impact on the change of the strength of streamlines and isotherms for nanofluid flow. The minimum average Nusselt number on the inner cylinder is obtained at Ra$_E$ = 10$^4$, and the minimum total entropy generation is found at Re = 400 for given parameters. The entropy generation minimization is determined in case of different nanoparticle volume fractions. It is observed that at the same external Rayleigh numbers, the LTNE condition obtained with internal heat generation is very different from that without heat generation.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, there is no previous paper presenting mixed convection and entropy generation of SWCNT–water nanofluid in a porous annulus under LTNE condition. The addition of nanoparticles to based fluid leads to a decrease in the value of minimum total entropy generation. Thus, using nanofluid has a significant role in the thermal design and optimization of heat transfer applications.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analytically perform gaseous slip flow and heat transfer analysis within a parallel-plate microchannel partially filled with a centered porous medium under local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) condition. Heat transfer of gaseous flow in a porous microchannel is analytically studied. Energy communication at the porous-fluid interface is considered by two approaches: the gas rarefaction negatively impacts the heat transfer performance, and the optimum ratio of porous thickness is found to be around 0.8.

Design/methodology/approach

Both Models A and B are utilized to consider the heat flux splitting for the fluid and solid phases at the porous-fluid interface.

Findings

Analytical solutions for the fluid and solid phase temperature distributions and the Nusselt number are derived. In the no-slip flow limit, the present analytical solutions are validated by the partially and fully filled cases available in the literature.

Research limitations/implications

The continuum flow (no-slip flow) is only a special case of the slip flow. Meanwhile, the effects of pertinent parameters on the heat transfer are also discussed.

Practical implications

A survey of available literature mentioned above indicates a shortage of information for slip flow and heat transfer in partially filled porous systems. The main objective of the present study is to investigate the slip flow and heat transfer characteristics for forced convection through a microchannel partially filled with a porous medium under LTNE condition. The porous substrate is placed at the center of the microchannel. Analytical solutions for the temperature distributions of the fluid and solid phases and the Nusselt number at the microchannel wall are obtained.

Compared with the results obtained for the continuum flow regime, the gas rarefaction negatively impacts the heat transfer efficiency and has little influence on the optimal porous thickness.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze two different approaches (Models A and B) for an adiabatic boundary condition at the wall of a channel filled with a porous medium. The analytical solutions for the velocity distribution, the fluid and solid phase temperature distributions are derived and compared with numerical solutions. The phenomenon of heat flux bifurcation for Model A is demonstrated. The effects of pertinent parameter C on the applicability of the Models A and B are discussed. Analytical solutions for the overall Nusselt number and the heat flux distribution at the channel wall are derived and the influence of pertinent parameters Da and k on the overall Nusselt number and the heat flux distribution is discussed.

Design/methodology/approach

Two approaches (Models A and B) for an adiabatic boundary condition in porous media under local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) conditions are analyzed in this work. The analysis is applied to a microchannel which is modeled as a porous medium.

Findings

The phenomenon of heat flux bifurcation at the wall for Model A is demonstrated. The effect of pertinent parameter C on the applicability of each model is discussed. Model A is applicable when C is relatively large and Model B is applicable when C is small. The heat flux distribution is obtained and the influence of Da and k is discussed. For Model A, ϕAfin increases and ϕAsub, ϕAcover decrease as Da decreases and k is held constant, ϕAsub increases and ϕAfin, ϕAcover decrease as k increases while Da is held constant; for Model B, ϕBfin increases and ϕBsub decreases either as Da decreases or k decreases. The overall Nusselt number is also obtained and the effect of Da and k is discussed: Nu increases as either Da or k decrease for both models. The overall Nusselt number for Model A is larger than that for Model B when Da is large, the overall Nusselt numbers for Models A and B are equivalent when Da is small.

Research limitations/implications

Proper representation of the energy equation and the boundary conditions for heat transfer in porous media is very important. There are two different models for representing energy transfer in porous media: local thermal equilibrium (LTE) and LTNE. Although LTE model is more convenient to use, the LTE assumption is not valid when a substantial temperature difference exists between the solid and fluid phases.

Practical implications

Fluid flow and convective heat transfer in porous media have many important applications such as thermal energy storage, nuclear waste repository, electronic cooling, geothermal energy extraction, petroleum processing and heat transfer enhancement.

Social implications

This work has important fundamental implications.

Originality/value

In this work the microchannel is modeled as an equivalent porous medium. The analytical solutions for the velocity distribution, the fluid and solid phase temperature distributions are obtained and compared with numerical solutions. The first type of heat flux bifurcation phenomenon, which indicates that the direction of the temperature gradient for the fluid and solid phases is different at the channel wall, occurs when Model A is utilized. The effect of pertinent parameter C on the applicability of the models is also discussed. The analytical solutions for the overall Nusselt number and the heat flux distribution at the channel wall are derived, and the effects of pertinent parameters Da and k on the overall Nusselt number and the heat flux distribution are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to numerically scrutinize the entropy generation minimization and mixed convective heat transfer of multi-walled carbon nanotubes–Fe3O4/water hybrid nanofluid flow in a lid-driven square enclosure with heat generation in the presence of a porous layer on inner surfaces, considering local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) approach and the non-Darcy flow model.

Design/methodology/approach

The dimensionless governing equations for hybrid nanofluid and solid phases are solved by applying the finite volume method and semi-implicit method for pressure-linked equations algorithm.

Findings

The roles of the internal heat generation in the porous layer, LTNE model and nanoparticles volume fraction on mixed convection phenomenon and entropy generation are introduced for lid-driven cavity hybrid nanofluid flow. Based on the investigation of entropy generation and heat transfer, the minimum total entropy generation and average Nusselt numbers are found at 1 ≤ Ri ≤ 10 where the effect of the forced and free convection flow directions being opposite each other is very significant. When considering various nanoparticle volume fractions, it becomes evident that the minimum entropy generation occurs in the case of φ = 0.1%. The outcomes of LTNE number reveal the operating parameters in which thermal equilibrium occurs between hybrid nanofluid and solid phases.

Originality/value

The analysis of entropy generation under various shear and buoyancy forces plays a significant role in the suitable thermal design and optimization of mixed convective heat transfer applications. This research significantly contributes to the optimization of design and the advancement of innovative solutions across diverse engineering disciplines, such as packed-bed thermal energy storage and thermal insulation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to theoretically analysis the steady-state natural convection flow and heat transfer of nanofluids in a square enclosure filled with a porous medium saturated with a nanofluid considering local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) effects. Different local temperatures for the solid phase of the nanoparticles, the solid phase of porous matrix and the liquid phase of the base fluid are taken into account.

Design/methodology/approach

The Buongiorno’s model, incorporating the Brownian motion and thermophoresis effects, is utilized to take into account the migration of nanoparticles. Using appropriate non-dimensional variables, the governing equations are transformed into the non-dimensional form, and the finite element method is utilized to solve the governing equations.

Findings

The results show that the increase of buoyancy ratio parameter (Nr) decreases the magnitude of average Nusselt number. The increase of the nanoparticles-fluid interface heat transfer parameter (Nhp) increases the average Nusselt number for nanoparticles and decreases the average Nusselt number for the base fluid. The nanofluid and porous matrix with large values of modified thermal capacity ratios (γ p and γ s ) are of interest for heat transfer applications.

Originality/value

The three phases of nanoparticles, base fluid and the porous matrix are in the LTNE. The effect of mass transfer of nanoparticles due to the Brownian motion and thermophoresis effects are also taken into account.

Abstract

Purpose

The simultaneous effects of local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) and vertical heterogeneity in permeability on the onset of ferromagnetic convection in a Brinkman porous medium are analyzed in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field. The eigenvalue problem is solved numerically using shooting method for isothermal rigid-ferromagnetic boundaries for various forms of vertically stratified permeability function Γ(z). The effect of vertically stratified permeability is found to either hasten or delay the onset of ferromagnetic convection. The deviation in the critical Rayleigh number between different forms of Γ(z) is found to be not so significant with an increase in the Darcy number. It is observed that the general quadratic variation of Γ(z) has more destabilizing effect on the system when compared to the constant permeability porous medium case. Besides, the influence of LTNE and magnetic parameters on the criterion for the onset of ferromagnetic convection has been assessed in detail. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Ferroconvection in a porous medium has been analyzed considering heterogeneity in the permeability of the porous medium. The resulting eigenvalue problem has been solved numerically using shooting method as well as Galerkin method for realistic boundary conditions.

Findings

The novelty of the present study lies in understanding the effect of heterogeneity in the permeability of the porous medium on control of ferroconvection in a porous medium. In analyzing the problem, realistic boundary conditions are considered and the resulting eigenvalue problem is solved numerically using shooting method as well as Galerkin method.

Originality/value

Control of ferroconvection in a porous medium is an important feature in heat transfer-related problems and many mechanisms are being used to understand this aspect in the literature. The novelty of the present study lies in recognizing the effect of heterogeneity in the permeability of the porous medium on control of ferroconvection. This fact has been analyzed in detail for various forms of heterogeneity functions using numerical techniques by considering realistic boundary conditions.
