Abstract

Purpose

Photographs are a kind of cultural heritage and very useful for cultural and historical studies. However, traditional or manual research methods are costly and cannot be applied on a large scale. This paper aims to present an exploratory study for understanding the cultural concerns of libraries based on the automatic analysis of large-scale image collections.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, an image dataset including 85,023 images preserved and shared by 28 libraries is collected from the Flickr Commons project. Then, a method is proposed for representing the culture with a distribution of visual semantic concepts using a state-of-the-art deep learning technique and measuring the cultural concerns of image collections using two metrics. Case studies on this dataset demonstrated the great potential and promise of the method for understanding large-scale image collections from the perspective of cultural concerns.

Findings

The proposed method has the ability to discover important cultural units from large-scale image collections. The proposed two metrics are able to quantify the cultural concerns of libraries from different perspectives.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first automatic analysis of images for the purpose of understanding cultural concerns of libraries. The significance of this study mainly consists in the proposed method of understanding the cultural concerns of libraries based on the automatic analysis of the visual semantic concepts in image collections. Moreover, this paper has examined the cultural concerns (e.g. important cultural units, cultural focus, trends and volatility of cultural concerns) of 28 libraries.

Abstract

Purpose

As the excessive lifting force can lead to catwalk rollover and well site accidents, the lifting process boundary conditions and structural parameters have a significant effect lifting force, it is important to analysis the structural parameters on the maximum lifting force in the lifting process of power catwalk.

Design/methodology/approach

A new model is proposed to analyze the influence of structure parameters on its lifting force for lifting power catwalk in this paper, and the geometric and dynamic equations are established according to the different boundary conditions in different stages. In addition, the establishment of dynamics equations is based on D'Alembert's principle. To solve the model, dynamic analysis software is developed, which uses c # call MATLAB to solve the geometric and dynamic equations. The maximum lifting force is analyzed and optimized according to the software, the influence of structural parameters on the maximum lifting force is obtained and the correctness of the optimization is proved by experiments.

Findings

The best value of offset e is 0. The length of L22 should as small as possible while the installation size of the end of the conveying arm are guaranteed. The length of L1 should as small as possible while ensuring the not exceed the maximum value. The maximum lifting force remain the same in the second phase, the maximum lifting force decreases with the increase of Lcp, Lcpshould as small as possible. The maximum pressure of the hydraulic oil dropped by an average of 13.62% under optimized parameters.

Practical implications

This paper provides a theoretical basis for the selection of hydraulic winch, which also provides the theoretical basis and data support for the design and optimization of the structural parameters of the power catwalk.

Social implications

This research has industrial applications in SJ Petroleum Machinery CO.LTD, SINOPEC (China) .CANRIG, North Rig, TESCO, Sichuan HONGHUA petroleum equipment CO.LTD of CNPC., Baoji Oil field Machinery CO.LTD, SJ Petroleum Machinery Co. LTD of SINOPEC, Yantai Jereh Oilfield Services Group CO.LTD, Nanyang clips oil equipment (group) CO. LTD, etc are the likely users.

Originality/value

A new model is proposed to analyze the lifting force of lifting power catwalk. The model takes into account the inertia force of the structure, development of dynamics software and analysis and optimization of structural parameters. The maximum lifting force is analyzed and optimized according to the software, the influence of structural parameters on the maximum lifting force is obtained and the correctness of the optimization is proved by experiments.

Abstract

Gives a critical examination of “Markets” within the marketing environment, and suggests that the system of marketing can be described by two fundamental dimensions: activity and product. Presents a normative view of the relationships that exist between a marketing system and its environment. Proposes that the system is more effective in same conditions than in others. Indicates that the dynamics of marketing strategy and competitive advantage should be considered.

Abstract

This study examines the relation between managerial ownership structure and earnings management. Unlike previous research which treats insiders as a homogeneous group, we further classify insiders into executives, outside directors, and blockholders to conduct an in‐depth study. Earnings management is captured by discretionary accruals that are estimated using the modified Jones model. For a large sample of Taiwanese listed firms over the period 1997 and 2004, we find that discretionary accruals first increase and then decrease with executive ownership, forming an inverted U‐shaped relationship. However, discretionary accruals are positively affected by director ownership and blockholder ownership. The results suggest that equity stake owned by top officers of a firm should be encouraged in order to reduce agency cost, thus enhancing information content of earnings.

Abstract

Purpose

The importance of financial dependence of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) on their performance is a relatively unaddressed area of research. Relatedly, whether and to what extent foreign bank penetration exerts an impact in the presence of financial dependence also remains an open question. The purpose of the paper in this regard is to exploit unit-level data on Indian SMEs and assess the independent and interactive effects of financial dependence on SME behaviour, in the presence of foreign banks.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses fixed effects specification to address the issue. In subsequent analysis, this study also uses an instrumental variable approach for robustness.

Findings

The results indicate that financial dependence improves investment and employment, although there is a decline in productivity. These findings differ across size classes of SMEs. Similar is the evidence in the presence of foreign banks. In particular, foreign bank penetration leads to a decline in investment for micro and medium SMEs, although for small SMEs, the impact is found to be the opposite.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is one of the early within-country studies to examine the interface between SMEs and financial dependence and the role played by foreign banks in this regard.

Abstract

Purpose

The chapter aims to consider current approaches to brand management and brand value assessment with substantive analysis of the positions of Russian and foreign scientists.

Design/Methodology/Approach

Considering the numerous definitions outlined in scientific and educational literature, the author's definition of the term ‘brand’ is given; the history of development and current approaches to the definition and identification of the role and importance of branding in large international and domestic companies are analysed; attention is focused on the features and stages of branding in companies. Particular attention is paid to the essence and relationship of strategic company management and brand valuation.

Findings

The authors reveal proactive branding as a transition from unbranded goods to consumer loyalty. A matrix of brand strategies is drawn up. Professional marketing standards for entrepreneurs are systematised. The management of the brand's life cycle in the matrix ‘profitability – the cost of the brand’ is proposed.

Originality/Value

The authors define prospects and provide recommendations for improving the practice of brand management and brand value assessment, making it possible to increase the effectiveness of strategic marketing business management.

Abstract

The chapter aims to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and crisis on the implementation of the game market strategy of clustering business structures. The chapter contributes to the literature by clarifying the concept of economic clustering from the perspectives of game theory and stakeholder theory in the COVID-19 pandemic and crisis. The scientific novelty and originality of the research results are that they revealed differences in the effectiveness of the game strategy of clustering business structures, first, between developed and developing countries and, second, between conditions of stability and conditions of crisis. The theoretical significance of the results and conclusions is that they opened a new perspective on the clustering of business structures – from the perspective of game theory (as a game strategy in its alternativity with the strategy of individual business presence in the market) and from the perspective of stakeholder theory (as a market strategy, the effectiveness of which is evaluated for all stakeholders). The practical significance of the research lies in the fact that it allows rationalising the decision-making on the implementation of the game strategy of clustering business structures in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and crisis, considering the peculiarities of developed and developing countries. The authors provide their recommendations for each category of country.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper investigates the impact of refusal to deal by a monopoly supplier of an essential input on firms’ investments in product quality, consumer surplus, and net social welfare.

Methodology/approach

The paper uses a standard economic model of endogenous quality choice for horizontally differentiated products to compare market performance with and without refusal do deal.

Findings

Refusal to deal increases the payoff of the integrated firm and reduces equilibrium investment in quality, consumer surplus, and net social welfare if varieties are moderate or good substitutes. If varieties are poor substitutes, the integrated firm maximizes its payoff setting a wholesale price that allows the downstream rival a small economic profit.

Research/practical/social implications

The analysis presented here implies that it is actual rivalry in the development of high-quality substitute varieties that promotes consumer welfare, and that such rivalry is ill served by the exercise of market power in input markets and by the refusal of vertically integrated upstream firms to deal with their nonintegrated downstream rivals. Reliance on the lure of monopoly profit to get good market performance is misplaced.
