Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe a large-scale algorithm for generating a catalogue of scientific publication records (citations) from a crowd-sourced data, demonstrate how to learn an optimal combination of distance metrics for duplicate detection and introduce a parallel duplicate clustering algorithm.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors developed the algorithm and compared it with state-of-the art systems tackling the same problem. The authors used benchmark data sets (3k data points) to test the effectiveness of our algorithm and a real-life data ( > 90 million) to test the efficiency and scalability of our algorithm.

Findings

The authors show that duplicate detection can be improved by an additional step we call duplicate clustering. The authors also show how to improve the efficiency of map/reduce similarity calculation algorithm by introducing a sampling step. Finally, the authors find that the system is comparable to the state-of-the art systems for duplicate detection, and that it can scale to deal with hundreds of million data points.

Research limitations/implications

Academic researchers can use this paper to understand some of the issues of transitivity in duplicate detection, and its effects on digital catalogue generations.

Practical implications

Industry practitioners can use this paper as a use case study for generating a large-scale real-life catalogue generation system that deals with millions of records in a scalable and efficient way.

Originality/value

In contrast to other similarity calculation algorithms developed for m/r frameworks the authors present a specific variant of similarity calculation that is optimized for duplicate detection of bibliographic records by extending previously proposed e-algorithm based on inverted index creation. In addition, the authors are concerned with more than duplicate detection, and investigate how to group detected duplicates. The authors develop distinct algorithms for duplicate detection and duplicate clustering and use the canopy clustering idea for multi-pass clustering. The work extends the current state-of-the-art by including the duplicate clustering step and demonstrate new strategies for speeding up m/r similarity calculations.

Thoreau heartily accepted the motto, ‘that government is best which governs least’. Our forefathers braved treacherous oceans and alien lands emboldened by that belief, after enduring the Crown's heavy hand invading and restricting their religious and personal lives. That is why, among the many freedoms embodied in our Constitution, the right to privacy was included in the Fourth Amendment to protect individuals from arbitrary intrusion by the state. The right has been fundamental to the establishment of a more tolerant society devoted to the principles of liberty and justice for all.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore using a reflexive approach the impact of author's personal positioning on issues of power balance between the interviewer and the interviewee, dealing with sensitive stories and concerns of difference and sameness between participants and the researcher in both the data collection process and also during the interviews.

Design/methodology/approach

Initial data were gathered from 45 semi-structured interviews with self-identified gay men in a wide range of occupations and ages working in the seaside resort of Bournemouth on the south coast of England.

Findings

The paper highlights some of the dilemmas of insider status and doing research on gay men. These include: ethical issues of closeness and involvement with participants, dealing with author's own personal frustrations, tackling the power imbalance between the interviewer and the interviewee and the impact of author's personal positioning on the data collection.

Originality/value

Little research has been done on the impact of men doing research on issues of diversity. In particular, this paper re-examines the power balance between the interviewer and interviewee as being one sided as previous studies have suggested in the researcher's favour. It also uncovers ethical dilemmas such as sexual attraction and involvement that has had scant coverage in the literature.

Abstract

In 1984 the world was running a current account deficit with itself of US$100bn. The World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Organisation for Economic Co‐operation and Development (OECD), and the US Federal Reserve have all confirmed this observation. Given that world trade forms a closed system, the question arises of what caused the indicators that measure this trade to become so inaccurate. The observation that in the early 1980s the narcotics trade surpassed the petroleum industry to become the world's largest business activity by gross turnover provides a partial answer. Noting that the growth in the narcotics trade is merely one aspect of the unprecedented growth in organised crime and the illegal economy over the last two decades leads to a more complete answer. The implication is that criminal economic activity, which by its nature seeks to evade capture in statistics, accounts for a significant portion of global economic activity missed by standard accounting practices.

Abstract

As business becomes increasingly global, it is important for managers to appreciate that practices that work well in one country may not work as well in other countries. This article compares cost center practices under Grenzplankostenrechnung (GPK), a common approach to cost accounting in Germany, and typical cost center practices in the United States. Differences between Germany and the United States on Hofstede’s uncertainty avoidance dimension and in workforce and management education provide possible explanations for differences in the responsibility assigned to cost center managers between Germany and the United States. Differences in cost center practices concerning classification of costs, measures to use when considering changes in costs, and the size and scope of the cost center between Germany and the United States all support these differences in cost center manager responsibility.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate masculinity in Chinese social media marketing for global luxury fashion brands through two studies.

Design/methodology/approach

Study 1 compares physical characteristics of males in visually oriented US (Instagram) and Chinese (Weibo) social media posts promoting global luxury fashion magazine brands (e.g. Vogue, Cosmopolitan, GQ and Esquire). Study 2 examines the prevalence of and Chinese consumers’ responses (reposts, comments and likes) to different masculinities depicted in luxury fashion brand-sponsored Weibo posts.

Findings

Male portrayals for Chinese audiences feature more characteristics associated with emerging East Asian hybrid masculinities – “Little Fresh Meat” (LFM) and “Old Grilled Meat” (OGM) – than associated with global or regional hegemonic masculinity (i.e. the scholarly Wén and action-oriented Wu). Wén remains common in social media posts for luxury fashion goods, but LFM and OGM engender more consumer responses.

Practical implications

Chinese luxury fashion marketing depicts masculinity more similarly to other East Asian marketing than to Western marketing. Some luxury fashion brands are struggling for acceptance among Chinese youth. Luxury fashion marketers should incorporate hybrid rather than hegemonic masculinities to prompt more favorable responses among Chinese consumers, especially younger female target markets.

Originality/value

Growing female occupational and consumer power and shifting male employment from blue-collar to white-collar jobs have influenced media portrayals of masculinity. Social media marketing for luxury fashion brands demonstrates the prevalence and appeal of hybrid masculinities in China.
