Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to critically evaluate the canonical contribution of the classical theories of multinational enterprises (MNE) and complement them with congruous multi-theoretical lenses to a propose a meta-theoretical view for competitive advantage. The proposed framework is applied to fundamental questions of MNE, and exploratory insights are revealed.

Design/methodology/approach

This study sought to review the literature on various paradigms such as resource-based view, knowledge-based view, attention-based view, relational view, dynamic capability view and institution-based view to propose a meta-theoretical approach explicating the phenomenon of competitiveness.

Findings

This study proffers that the key to global competitiveness lies in building micro-foundational, multidimensional and multilevel multinational orchestration capabilities. The requisite orchestration capabilities are capabilities par excellence that explain: how organizational capabilities originate through the cognition of individual employees at the micro level; how individual-level abilities are amplified when they are harnessed through relational capabilities to form knowledge capabilities at the meso-level; and how the confluence of knowledge capabilities and higher order dynamic capabilities gives rise to heterogeneous firm-level knowledge-based dynamic capabilities that can be combined with institution capabilities to aggrandize the prediction of competitive advantage for MNEs.

Originality/value

The successful development of MNE competitiveness as a field of academic inquiry, brought about by an increasing amount of theoretical specialization, has come at the price of significant fragmentation of the overall scientific quest. The abovementioned paradigms and their underlying constructs have primarily been conceptualized in silos. The classical theories of MNE have been used a starting point to which complementary multidisciplinary views have been scaffolded to gain a more nuanced understanding of global competitiveness.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to conceptualize the business model (BM) from a knowledge-based view (KBV), to interpret its nature and knowledge structure and to investigate the relationship between its imitability and the erosion of firm’s competitive advantage.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on a systematic literature review, this study builds an integrated framework to explicate the nature and structure of the BM from a KBV. Moreover, on the analysis of two contrasting cases, the argument concerning the relationship between BM imitability and its strategic value is proposed, analyzed and supported.

Findings

The main finding of this study is that a BM can be viewed as a structured knowledge cluster that contains explicit and implicit parts. Its imitation is a dynamic process of knowledge diffusion across firm boundaries. Ceteris paribus, with a lower proportion of implicit knowledge, a BM is more likely to be imitated and the adopter’s competitive advantage is more likely to be eroded, and vice versa.

Practical implications

The proposed framework could provide managers with a deeper understanding of the nature and structure of the BM and help potential adopters develop a successful entry strategy by avoiding BMs that seem profitable but are incapable of maintaining competitive advantage.

Originality/value

As a complement to previous studies, the research conceptualizes the BM as a “structured knowledge cluster” to explicate its nature and knowledge structure from a KBV. The implicit part of the BM is explored, and its importance for the adopter’s competitive advantage is discussed and verified.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to empirically validate that a knowledge-based view (KBV) is an important framework to understand price discovery processes in initial public offerings (IPOs) by emphasizing the unique feature of knowledge creation jointly invoked by underwriters and institutional investors during the book building phase.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors decompose underwriters’ incremental knowledge acquisition into objective knowledge – acquired from premarket bids – and subjective knowledge – which is orthogonal to the objective knowledge. The authors implement a multiplicative heteroscedasticity model to analyze how each knowledge component relates to the level and volatility (as a proxy of pricing uncertainty) of post-issue returns. The authors take the 2007 regulatory change as a quasi-natural experiment in which institutional investors were incentivized to provide true information.

Findings

For Korean IPOs, the authors find that the objective (subjective) knowledge component reduces (increases) both pricing uncertainty and underpricing. The authors also observe that the efficacy of the IPO knowledge creation critically depends on the quality of the information provided by institutional investors, as anticipated by the KBV literature.

Originality/value

Using fine-grained knowledge measures, the authors provide original, compelling evidence that objective (subjective) knowledge formulated from the IPO knowledge-creation processes de facto alleviates (worsens) underwriters’ pricing difficulties. This reinforces the importance of knowledge-based mechanisms in managerial decision-making processes.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this paper is to highlight the importance of information technology in service recovery performance through the exploration of its influence on service recovery performance components and determinants.

Design/methodology/approach

A general inductive approach for analyzing qualitative data was adopted since the main research question of “How can information technology enable successful service recovery?” has not been examined in the complaint management literature. Data were collected through in‐depth interviews with key executives working in the Tunisian banking sector.

Findings

Drawing on the knowledge‐based view (KBV), the authors develop a general framework to understand the differences in service recovery performance (SRP). The research shows that various knowledge‐based resources such as customer orientation (CO), internal orientation (IO), and information technology (IT) complement one another to impact on SRP. Ignoring the complementarities of these resources in assessing SRP can seriously underestimate the impact of IT on the knowledge assets that are embedded in the firm recovery competency. This distinctive business competency is labelled knowledge enabled recovery effectiveness (KERE).

Research limitations/implications

Given the exploratory nature of this study, these preliminary results need quantitative research to refine theory and measurement of service recovery capabilities and for future validation of the proposed framework.

Practical implications

The findings provide important implications for the effective design and the automation of complaint management and for the intervening mechanisms that govern the IT business value.

Originality/value

The paper examines the issue of complaint management from a knowledge based view and calls for the need to consider specific customer relationship management (CRM) areas as a set of knowledge based activities.

Abstract

Purpose

Several manuscripts are adopting knowledge-based dynamic capabilities (KBDCs) as their main theoretical lens. However, these manuscripts lack consistent conceptualization and systematization of the construct. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to advance the understanding of KBDCs by clarifying the dominant concepts at the junction of knowledge management and dynamic capabilities domains, identifying which emerging themes are gaining traction with KBDCs scholars, demonstrating how the central thesis around KBDCs has evolved and explaining how can KBDCs scholars move towards finding a mutually agreed conceptualization of the field to advance empirical assessment.

Design/methodology/approach

The Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Core Collection database was used to extract 225 manuscripts that lie at the confluence of two promising management domains, namely, knowledge management and dynamic capabilities. A scientometric analysis including co-citation analysis, bibliographic coupling, keyword co-occurrence network analysis and text mining was conducted and integrated with a systematic review of results to facilitate an unstructured ontological discovery in the field of KBDCs.

Findings

The co-citation analysis produced three clusters of research at the junction of knowledge management and dynamic capabilities, whereas the bibliographic coupling divulged five themes of research that are gaining traction with KBDCs scholars. The systematic literature review helped to clarify each clusters’ content. While scientific mapping analysis explained how the central thesis around KBDCs has evolved, text mining and keyword analysis established how KBDCs emerge from the combination of knowledge management process capabilities and dynamic capabilities.

Originality/value

Minimal attention has been paid to systematizing the literature on KBDCs. Accordingly, KBDCs view has been investigated through complementary scientometric methods involving machine-based algorithms to allow for a more robust, structured, comprehensive and unbiased mapping of this emerging field of research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to enhance the conceptual and practical understanding of individual, group and future knowledge as perceived by company owners and managers operating in Vietnam. To date, knowledge gaps remain concerning this emerging economy, for instance, regarding the significance of knowledge management (KM) skills and innovativeness in positively affecting firms' journey. Overall, the study will add to the extant KM literature, partly address extant research gaps and develop a conceptual model. To support the study's literature foundation, the knowledge-based view framework will be considered.

Design/methodology/approach

An inductive approach and multi-case study were chosen. The views of 17 individuals in leadership positions representing six companies were gathered through semi-structured, in-depth interviews.

Findings

The analysis revealed the influence of seven dimensions. First, the importance of individuals' knowledge is conceptualised by the conspicuous, approach-based and self-initiated dimensions. Second, the collective action-based and collective approach-based knowledge dimensions illuminate the importance of group knowledge. Third, the externally and internally-oriented knowledge dimensions provide guidance and understanding concerning future knowledge. The analysis also underlines the alignment between the findings and the knowledge-based view in various areas.

Originality/value

The dimensions illuminating the research have practical implications for business owners/managers, for instance, motivational and rewarding strategies that companies could consider in order to enhance or maintain a high flow of knowledge acquisition and operationalisation. Furthermore, these implications could help foster a stronger entrepreneurial culture and benefit Vietnam or other emerging economies in their development and success journey. Conceptually, a developed framework affords a richer understanding of the different facets of knowledge at a company level.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to synthesize existing knowledge‐based dynamic capabilities research into a single typology for managerial and academic use.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the resource‐based and knowledge‐based views, this study conducts a theoretically grounded typology development exercise based on an extensive review of the existing dynamic capabilities literature.

Findings

The paper identifies seven frameworks presented in the literature that showed some consistency in underlying concepts but conflict in nomenclature and application. Identifying over 80 uses of knowledge‐based dynamic capabilities in the literature review, three complementary dimensions that are common amongst the frameworks are identified and integrated into a consistent typology of eight knowledge‐based dynamic capabilities to encompass the extant literature.

Originality/value

Addressing fragmentation in the knowledge‐based dynamic capabilities discourse, the paper advances the concept of knowledge‐based dynamic capabilities by organizing the existing literature and frameworks into a comprehensive and consistent typology. Moreover, this integrative typology allows managers and researchers to identify those capabilities in use and the commonalities between them. Finally, the paper identifies a new knowledge‐based dynamic capability that has not yet been identified in any existing framework.

Purpose

As technology accelerates, the pace of innovation and product and process life cycles have significantly decreased. Firms seek to leverage their employees' efforts, particularly through knowledge-based HR practices and intellectual skills, to attain innovative performances. Despite extensive research, the scope and role of p-shaped skills have yet to be considered; this is an important oversight. Through the lens of a knowledge-based perspective, this study examines the association of knowledge-based HR practices, p-shaped skills and innovative performance.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper tested the hypotheses using data obtained from large and SMEs in Riyadh, Saudi. A partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique was applied to analyze the data.

Findings

The results of the PLS-SEM algorithm suggest that knowledge-based HR practices result in increased p-shaped skills, and p-shaped skills result in increased innovative performance. Accordingly, p-shaped skills mediate the association between knowledge-based HR practices and innovative performances.

Originality/value

This is among the first study to operationalize a p-shaped skills scale. The paper extends its functionality as a predictor for innovative performance and the outcome of knowledge-driven HR practices. This research offers valuable theoretical and practical implications.

Purpose

Prior studies examine the relationship between knowledge management (KM) enablers and KM effectiveness. However, the critical role of business process outcome is neglected. The purpose of this paper is to understand the mediating effect of business process outcomes. Based on knowledge-based view (KBV), two KM enabler variables, KM infrastructure (KMI) and KM capabilities (KMC), and one KM effectiveness variable, market relationships, are included.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was conducted. The sampling frame was obtained from the database of the Bureau of National Health Insurance and Financial Supervisory Commission in Taiwan. After unusable questionnaires excluded, the usable respondents were 256 which are from 63 hospitals and 93 financial firms. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the relationships among KMI, KMC, business process outcome, and market relationships.

Findings

The findings indicated that both KMI and KMC have positive influences on market relationships through business process outcome. The authors also demonstrate how KMI and KMC improve market relationships through business process outcome to deliver the value of KM.

Originality/value

Based on KBV, KMI and KMC are as KM enablers to facilitate KM activities. In the light of professional service industries (i.e. hospitals and financial firms), the study highlights the mediating effect of business process outcomes between KM enablers and KM effectiveness. It furthers the understanding of how KM enablers can improve KM effectiveness.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to investigate the importance of knowledge as a tool for adaptation and competitive advantage through qualitative research, exploring the cases of four global family firms; and second, to develop a theoretical framework based on the knowledge-based view (KBV) of the firm to facilitate understanding of learning and knowledge acquisition among family firms.

Design/methodology/approach

This investigation focusses on the cases of four family firms, two operating in a developed (Australia), and two in an emerging economy (Uruguay). In-depth, face-to-face interviews were conducted with firm owners, co-owners and one manager.

Findings

Regardless of firms’ operating environment (OECD, emerging economy), similar outcomes were revealed. Indeed, firm management’s ability to gather, contextualise and synthesise knowledge, including tacit knowledge, emerged as crucial to adapt to new challenges in their business environment. Several tenets of the KBV emerged, including those associated with knowledge to solve emerging problems, specialisation through knowledge acquisition and applying specialised knowledge to produce. Importantly, firms’ ability to anticipate future events through tacit or new knowledge acquisition became evident.

Originality/value

The study makes two key contributions that represent originality and value. First, the presented theoretical framework facilitates understanding of various dimensions of knowledge, their resulting influence on firms’ preparedness to adapt to events in their business environment, and potential implications on their competitive advantage. Second, by qualitatively examining the participating family firms, the study addresses a recognised research gap, notably, that research investigating this group has been predominantly quantitative.
