Abstract

Purpose

Indonesian woven craft small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have encountered several difficulties in sustaining their success in the digital era. The performance of the business is contingent upon its ability to gain competitive advantage through traditional knowledge capabilities. The purpose of this research is to study the role of traditional knowledge management processes towards competitive advantage and sustainable performance for woven craft SMEs.

Design/methodology/approach

This research used a quantitative approach with a survey strategy. Confirmatory research was conducted to test five hypotheses to determine the causal relationship of four variables, namely, traditional knowledge management, dynamic capabilities, competitive advantage and sustainable performance. This study used a purposive sampling strategy and gathered data from 385 respondents. The sample was selected based on predetermined criteria, including operation for more than five years and entrepreneurial activity using traditional knowledge as a resource to manage product innovation. The analytical technique used was structural equation modelling with the support of the AMOS programme.

Findings

The findings indicated that traditional knowledge management processes directly affect dynamic capabilities and sustainable performance. This study also found traditional knowledge management processes play a significant role in enhancing competitive advantage mediated by dynamic capabilities. However, traditional knowledge management processes have no significant effect on competitive advantage. Hence, there is a significant effect contributed by the relationship between traditional knowledge management processes and sustainable performance. Therefore, in the context of craft woven SMEs, the higher the traditional knowledge-based capabilities, the higher their sustainable performance.

Originality/value

The novelty shows a direct relationship between traditional knowledge management processes and sustainable performance. This study also found traditional knowledge management processes meditated by dynamic capabilities have a relationship with competitive advantage. Traditional knowledge management processes will trigger an increase in dynamic capability which is a source of business development; those conditions will increase sustainable performance. Traditional knowledge-based capability is an antecedent of sustainable performance. The benefits of this research can be used as scientific literature regarding the link between traditional knowledge management processes, competitive advantage and sustainable performance. The results of this study can also be used as a basis for empowering traditional woven craft SMEs in Indonesia.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper sets out to integrate research on knowledge management with the dynamic capabilities approach. This paper will add to the understanding of dynamic capabilities by demonstrating that dynamic capabilities can be seen as composed of concrete and well‐known knowledge management activities.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is based on a literature review focusing on key knowledge management processes and activities as well as the concept of dynamic capabilities, the paper connects these two approaches. The analysis is centered on knowledge management activities which then are compiled into dynamic capabilities.

Findings

In the paper eight knowledge management activities are identified; knowledge creation, acquisition, capture, assembly, sharing, integration, leverage, and exploitation. These activities are assembled into the three dynamic capabilities of knowledge development, knowledge (re)combination, and knowledge use. The dynamic capabilities and the associated knowledge management activities create flows to and from the firm's stock of knowledge and they support the creation and use of organizational capabilities.

Practical implications

The findings in the paper demonstrate that the somewhat elusive concept of dynamic capabilities can be untangled through the use of knowledge management activities. Practicing managers struggling with the operationalization of dynamic capabilities should instead focus on the contributing knowledge management activities in order to operationalize and utilize the concept of dynamic capabilities.

Originality/value

The paper demonstrates that the existing research on knowledge management can be a key contributor to increasing our understanding of dynamic capabilities. This finding is valuable for both researchers and practitioners.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine and assess the effect of knowledge management and strategic leadership on performance of hospitals by using variables’ mediating effect of dynamic capability.

Design/methodology/approach

The population included in this study are all the elements of leadership, i.e. both structural and functional leaders at the four hospitals in Makassar [the central government (Dr Wahidin Sudiro Husodo), Regional General Hospital belonging to the Provincial Government of South Sulawesi (Hospital Labuang Baji and hospitals Hajj) and government hospitals (hospitals belonging Makassar City Government)]. The sample size resulting from the analysis tools included approximately 100 respondents. This research used both structural, i.e. structural equation modeling (SEM), and Sobel tests for assessing the mediation effects.

Findings

First, dynamic capabilities as a mediation variable in relationship between the knowledge management and performance of hospitals, indicates that higher knowledge management will result in improved hospital performance, if the mediated dynamic capability was also higher. Second, dynamic capabilities as the mediation in the relationship between strategic leadership and hospital performance indicates that a higher strategic leadership will lead to improved hospital performance, if the mediated dynamic capability was also higher.

Originality/value

The results of previous studies on knowledge management in public sector organizations were not sufficiently clear. Moreover, the study of knowledge management in the health services industry also received less attention from previous researchers. This research attempts to fill the gap further by examining the influence of knowledge management on organizational dynamic capability and organizational performance of hospitals. The presence of the mediating variable dynamic capability also differentiates this study from previous studies.

Purpose

Project delivery organizations (PDO) have to develop competitive advantage against new entrants. This study aims to explore the knowledge conversion transactions proposed by Nonaka and Takeuchi (1995) in project phases through the interplay of dynamic and operational capabilities. This study is based on a case study for a PDO in the engineering industry.

Design/methodology/approach

This study proposes a model of dynamics between the constructs, and its illustration with a case study of a PDO. The research extends the socialization, externalization, combination and internalization (SECI) model of knowledge management (KM).

Findings

This study provides an overview of existing research related to the constructs like applicability of operational and dynamic capabilities, knowledge configuration and knowledge management processes to individual projects delivered by a PDO for its clients. Further, this study provides an overview of the knowledge configuration adopted by an organization and how it helps to build the competitive advantage of an organization.

Research limitations/implications

This study proposes a model for applying the constructs to each of the phases of a project. It then illustrates the knowledge value chain in a PDO in the field of engineering projects with detailed insights into the steps of sensing, seizing and sharing knowledge across the project life cycle.

Practical implications

Project-based firms can use the learnings and create their own SECI model linking the conceptual model of KM and PDO and KM value chain.

Social implications

In social projects implementation, this conceptual model and process will be helpful in building efficiency and effectiveness.

Originality/value

Abstract

Purpose

Till now no study has been undertaken which test the knowledge management processes for creating dynamic capabilities on the basis of organization structures with interpersonal trust as an important variable. This paper serves as a preliminary study proposing an integrated conceptual model that unmistakably unifies the notions of knowledge management and dynamic capability.

Design/methodology/approach

Through an exhaustive literature review, the study explores the role of knowledge management in building dynamic capabilities within the organizations. Through the available literature, authors have attempted to study the relevance of knowledge management against the backdrop of Structuration theory.

Findings

Through their proposed framework, authors posit that the structural elements of an organization set the tone for knowledge management within the organization. Organizations face dynamic challenges from the external environment, and in absence of interpersonal trust the creation of dynamic capabilities becomes difficult.

Originality/value

First, the current study enriches the growing research interest in Knowledge management. Second, the study connects Knowledge management and interpersonal trust within the organizations, which in turn is influenced by the structure of the organization. Structures created in the organization decide the direction, quality and quantity of knowledge sharing within the organizations both through social systems and through formal reporting systems. Thus, this paper serves as a preliminary study proposing an integrated conceptual model that unmistakably unifies the notions of knowledge management and dynamic capability.

Abstract

Purpose

The current conventional strategic management model is incapable of dealing with various questions on organizational management in a dynamically discontinuous environment. Hence, how an enterprise can effectively apply its knowledge management (KM) capability and develop a uniquely dynamic capability in order to provide quick response to a dynamic environment has become an urgent need. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the above-mentioned issues.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to gain best exploration on KM capability, dynamic capability, and organizational performance, the questionnaire and statistical analytical techniques were used.

Findings

The results indicate that dynamic capability is an important intermediate organizational mechanism through which the benefits of KM capability are converted into performance effects at the corporate level. That is, KM capability enhances the dynamic capability of organizations. While dynamic capability, in turn, increases organizational performance and provides competitive advantages.

Research limitations/implications

This research applied a purposive sampling method and obtained a slightly inadequate number of respondents. Therefore, it is suggested that future research should apply a random sampling method to collect more responses and increase the generalizability.

Practical implications

This research aims to investigate KM capability, dynamic capability, and organizational performance, as well as establish and verify the patterns of the aforementioned relationships based on how enterprises implement their KM capabilities and dynamic capabilities to enhance organizational performance.

Originality/value

There is still little related literature investigating the relationships among KM capability, dynamic capability, and organizational performance. Hence, this study applies questionnaire methods as the main research tools in order to conduct an in-depth investigation into the influence of KM capability and dynamic capability on organizational performance. Furthermore, this research is expected to provide enterprises with valuable suggestions for management practices.

Abstract

Purpose

Recent research has highlighted the beneficial role of supply chain resilience for ensuring efficient production and business processes. The purpose of this study is to explore enablers of supply chain resilience. In particular, the authors examine whether and how dynamic capabilities and knowledge management can help firms develop a resilient supply chain in times of high disruption and uncertainty.

Design/methodology/approach

A single longitudinal case study design was adopted. Data was collected over 8 years from a Pakistani textile producer and supplier through semi-structured interviews and was analyzed through NVivo to generate codes and themes that contributed to the development of the supply chain resilience model.

Findings

The analysis of case study shows that our focal firm strategically acquired, transferred and integrated market knowledge by investing in digital technologies and idiosyncratic resources and consequently developed a supply chain model that was resilient in addressing logistics and delivery challenges in uncertain & critical times.

Research limitations/implications

The study brings together three main research streams of organizational theory, namely supply chain, knowledge management and dynamic capabilities, and proposes a nuanced resilient supply chain model.

Practical implications

By applying the research findings, managers can adjust, develop and adopt supply chain resilience to address market volatilities, thereby creating value and longevity in their supply chain operations. However, the findings are context specific and should be applied cautiously.

Originality/value

The outcomes provide early hints on how companies in emerging economies can adopt and integrate novel digital technologies, and overhaul their organizational routines to facilitate knowledge management and develop dynamic capabilities, and consequently enhance the resilience of their supply chain operations.

Abstract

Purpose

Several manuscripts are adopting knowledge-based dynamic capabilities (KBDCs) as their main theoretical lens. However, these manuscripts lack consistent conceptualization and systematization of the construct. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to advance the understanding of KBDCs by clarifying the dominant concepts at the junction of knowledge management and dynamic capabilities domains, identifying which emerging themes are gaining traction with KBDCs scholars, demonstrating how the central thesis around KBDCs has evolved and explaining how can KBDCs scholars move towards finding a mutually agreed conceptualization of the field to advance empirical assessment.

Design/methodology/approach

The Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Core Collection database was used to extract 225 manuscripts that lie at the confluence of two promising management domains, namely, knowledge management and dynamic capabilities. A scientometric analysis including co-citation analysis, bibliographic coupling, keyword co-occurrence network analysis and text mining was conducted and integrated with a systematic review of results to facilitate an unstructured ontological discovery in the field of KBDCs.

Findings

The co-citation analysis produced three clusters of research at the junction of knowledge management and dynamic capabilities, whereas the bibliographic coupling divulged five themes of research that are gaining traction with KBDCs scholars. The systematic literature review helped to clarify each clusters’ content. While scientific mapping analysis explained how the central thesis around KBDCs has evolved, text mining and keyword analysis established how KBDCs emerge from the combination of knowledge management process capabilities and dynamic capabilities.

Originality/value

Minimal attention has been paid to systematizing the literature on KBDCs. Accordingly, KBDCs view has been investigated through complementary scientometric methods involving machine-based algorithms to allow for a more robust, structured, comprehensive and unbiased mapping of this emerging field of research.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the impact of knowledge management capabilities on agility, adaptability and alignment (triple-A), drawing upon the nexus of the knowledge-based view and dynamic ambidexterity in the context of manufacturing industry in the USA. It also assesses the performance outcomes of triple-A capabilities in terms of operational and relational performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Path analysis was performed in this empirical study in the manufacturing industry.

Findings

The results show that knowledge management capabilities are conducive to the development of triple-A capabilities, which in turn lead to the improvement of operational and relational performance.

Originality/value

This study is grounded in the marriage of the knowledge-based view and dynamic ambidexterity to assess the combinative impact of knowledge management capabilities of knowledge acquisition and sharing through absorptive and desorptive capacities on agility and adaptability through knowledge exploration and alignment by knowledge exploitation in the pursuit of triple-A capabilities. This study unentangles the linkage between knowledge management capabilities and triple-As by theorizing the connection between absorptive/desorptive capacity and exploration/exploitation in terms of responsive and efficient supply chain respectively.

Purpose

This study is the first to examine how big data analytics (BDA) capabilities affect green absorptive capacity (GAC) and green entrepreneurship orientation (GEO). It uses the dynamic capability view, BDA and knowledge-sharing literature. There is a lack of studies addressing the BDA–GAC and BDA–GEO relationships and their potential impact on green innovation. Continuing the ongoing research discussion, a few studies examined the vital implications of knowledge sharing (KS) on GAC, GEO and green innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used a cross-sectional and stratified random sampling technique to collect data through self-administered surveys among Chinese manufacturing firm employees. The study applied SmartPLS to analyze the obtained data.

Findings

The findings revealed that BDA capabilities positively influence GAC and GEO. In addition, GEO and KS positively impact green innovation. The KS recorded a positive impact on GAC and GEO. Furthermore, GAC and GEO recorded a partial mediating effect.

Practical implications

The study acknowledges that GAC is the backbone of a firm green entrepreneurial orientation, which needs to be aligned with BDA capabilities to anticipate future green business trends. GAC's help drives GEO's green business agenda. KS plays a strategic role in developing GAC, fostering GEO and improving green innovation.

Originality/value

The study highlights the necessity of aligning BDA capabilities to fit firms' GEO green business agendas. This study focuses on the role of BDA capabilities in developing firms' green dynamics capabilities (e.g. GAC), which helps GEO drive superior green business growth. KS develops GAC and boosts GEO to enhance green innovation.
