Abstract

Purpose

The singular success of Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. in rescuing IBM from dismemberment and destruction in terms of his shifting the institutional memory of 300,000 employees from corporate politics to customer service focus, has been expalined memory management explain failures as well?

Design/methodology/approach

Chacko (memory management in survival decisions of corportions 1956‐2003, Barmarick Publications, UK, 2006) published a sequence of ordered procedures (protocol) of memory management: memory management disequilibria dimensions (MD)2 protocol. This paper applies the protocol to the birth and death of the GO computer.

Findings

The memory management disequilibria dimensions (MD)2 protocol analyzes accurately the Jerry Kaplan narrative of founding on August 14, 1987, the GO corporation to AT&T firing the last remaining employees of EO, the spin‐off of GO on July 29, 1994. The habit patterns of thought and action that make a corporation/country unique are instructed/inscribed in individual/institional memory. This paper demonstrates that the (MD)2 protocol explains both success and failure, providing a basis to make memory management effective.

Abstract

Theorists, such as Darwin and Aristotle, have long argued that facial expressions communicate information about a person's emotional state. Recently, validated coding strategies for facial expressions have been developed, which enable researchers to reliably assess a person's affect. Although social, health, and clinical psychologists have regularly employed these objective measures of facial expressions (OMFE), occupational stress and well-being researchers are yet to benefit from this method. The subsequent chapter integrates the facial expression and occupational well-being literature. Specifically, we discuss the advantages of OMFE over self-reports and implications of OMFE for future research on occupational well-being.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to integrate the findings of articles appearing in European Journal of Marketing’s special section on covariance-based versus composite-based structural equations modeling (SEM).

Design/methodology/approach

This is an editorial which uses literature review to draw conclusions regarding areas of agreement, areas for further research, and changing the discussion around composite-based SEM methods.

Findings

There are now four new areas of agreement regarding composite-based SEM. Researchers should adopt a toolbox approach to their methods and know the strengths and weaknesses of the research tools in their toolbox. Partial least squares (PLS) SEM and covariance-based SEM are not substitutes, and it is inappropriate to use the language of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) in reporting measurement estimates from PLS SEM. Measurement matters and researchers need to devote effort to using reliable and valid multi-item measures in their investigations.

Originality/value

This postscript article outlines recommendations for authors, reviewers and editors regarding the analysis of data and reporting of results using structural equations models.

Abstract

Purpose

The current evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) practices and applications is creating a disconnection between modern-day information system (IS) research and practices. The purpose of this study is to propose a classification framework that connects the IS discipline to contemporary AI practices.

Design/methodology/approach

We conducted a review of practitioner literature to derive our framework's key dimensions. We reviewed 103 documents on AI published by 25 leading technology companies ranked in the 2019 list of Fortune 500 companies. After that, we reviewed and classified 110 information system (IS) publications on AI using our proposed framework to demonstrate its ability to classify IS research on AI and reveal relevant research gaps.

Findings

Practitioners have adopted different definitional perspectives of AI (field of study, concept, ability, system), explaining the differences in the development, implementation and expectations from AI experienced today. All these perspectives suggest that perception, comprehension, action and learning are the four capabilities AI artifacts must possess. However, leading IS journals have mostly published research adopting the “AI as an ability” perspective of AI with limited theoretical and empirical studies on AI adoption, use and impact.

Research limitations/implications

First, the framework is based on the perceptions of AI by a limited number of companies, although it includes all the companies leading current AI practices. Secondly, the IS literature reviewed is limited to a handful of journals. Thus, the conclusions may not be generalizable. However, they remain true for the articles reviewed, and they all come from well-respected IS journals.

Originality/value

This is the first study to consider the practitioner's AI perspective in designing a conceptual framework for AI research classification. The proposed framework and research agenda are used to show how IS could become a reference discipline in contemporary AI research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the psychometric properties of each item in the Sport Spectator Identification Scale (SSIS) (Wann and Branscombe, 1993) using the item response theory (IRT) and to provide evidence for modifications in the scale.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 635 spectators of US professional sports responded to the seven-item SSIS on an eight-point semantic differential scale. The general partial credit model was fitted to the data.

Findings

The results revealed that four items (Items 1, 2, 3 and 5) provide a relatively high amount of information, whereas three items (Items 4, 6 and 7) provide a low amount of information, indicating different levels of measurement precision among the items. Furthermore, the results showed that some low-level response options were rarely selected by participants, indicating that it may not be necessary to include response options as many as eight within each item.

Originality/value

Unlike previous studies examining the psychometric properties of the SSIS as a whole, the present study provides information about the usefulness of each item of the SSIS in measuring individuals' team identification. Based on the findings, the authors identified some issues with the three problematic items, including the wording of the items and the link between the question and the target construct. The authors make several suggestions for researchers and practitioners in improving individual item quality and in making informed decisions when using the SSIS in the future.

Synopsis

Over the last two decades, Under Armour (UA) has emerged from being the “underdog” in the sports apparel and footwear industry to being a leader in the industry, with a fierce attention to performance and great skill at picking up-and-coming athletes who emerge as superstars. This case underscores its administrative heritage, competitive strategy, and growth potential as a global player in a highly competitive industry. It addresses the tension between being a performance brand while launching lines for women vs technology applications and conflicts between its growth strategy and macro-economic forces. It highlights areas in which it has succeeded against macro-economic forces and where it has not.

Research methodology

The research relies primarily on secondary sources and countless studies of UA and its major competitors. Primary research is based on databases, videos of UA’s Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Plank, and articles from Bloomberg to The Baltimore Sun (UA’s headquarters) on the history, growth and future of UA. It also includes observations and site visits to one of its signature brand house stores as well as intensive research and directed studies with students in the USA and China.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review organizational research on the criterion-related validity of the Big Five model of personality with a view to examine the organizational utility of facet measures of personality.

Design/methodology/approach

A literature review of studies that use personality traits to predict organizational outcomes in three domains: performance (task and contextual), deviance, and interpersonal dynamics (leadership, team cohesion).

Findings

The authors identify 15 specific facets drawn from the Big Five model that appear to have demonstrated criterion-related validity in the prediction of organizational outcomes.

Practical implications

Results of the analysis suggest the utility of using facet-specific measures in organizational applications such as personnel selection.

Originality/value

Although there is a substantial literature speaking to the validity of the Big Five traits, the study identifies specific facets that may provide a basis for more focused use of personality variables in organizations. The work also provides the basis for further measurement development of occupationally relevant personality measures.

Purpose

Scholars have identified several predictors of learner satisfaction, but little research addresses the impact of intragroup conflict in a virtual learning context. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the potentially deleterious effects of perceived intragroup relationship conflict on virtual learners’ intention to re-enroll.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were systematically collected from virtual learners using an online questionnaire and then analyzed by multiple regression models.

Findings

The results show that emotional expressiveness is an antecedent to perceived intragroup relationship conflict, and the relationship is moderated by individuals’ perceived enjoyment of computer-mediated communication. Virtual learners with a higher emotional expressiveness (i.e. extraverts) experience higher perceived relationship conflict, which in turn, lowers their intention to re-enroll.

Research limitations/implications

The study confirms the antecedent and consequence of perceived intragroup relationship conflict in a virtual learning context.

Practical implications

Educational institutions and businesses may use three proposed strategies to deal with intragroup relationship conflict.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the limited knowledge on how to effectively manage virtual learning interactions by educational institutions and businesses.

Abstract

Purpose

To present a new hybrid differencing scheme for the numerical solution of an electromigration‐diffusion equation. The value of this work is evidenced by demonstrated improvement in the simulation of the Fu and Chan experiment when using the hybrid scheme.

Design/methodology/approach

A hybrid differencing scheme is developed which is based upon the solution of the pseudo‐steady state electromigration‐diffusion equation. In this scheme, a weighting parameter is calculated that varies the relative influence of the upwind node (relative to the direction of electromigration). This scheme significantly enhances the accuracy of electrochemical system mass transport models.

Findings

The hybrid scheme was compared to the upwind scheme. Use of the new hybrid scheme improved the accuracy of the model predictions by as much as 87 percent compared to the upwind scheme. However, use of the new scheme also increased the simulation time by between 6 and 43 percent. Deviations from electroneutrality and the presence of an activity coefficient gradient were detrimental to the stability of the hybrid scheme.

Research limitations/implications

This scheme is presented in the paper as an one‐dimensional (1D) scheme. However, it could be extended to more than 1D but some artificial viscosity may result.

Practical implications

The hybrid scheme developed and demonstrated herein is useful for researchers developing mass transport models of electrochemical systems. It has been proven capable of improving the accuracy of electrolyte mass transport models.

Originality/value

This is the first hybrid differencing scheme designed for the special characteristics of electrochemical mass transport systems. It greatly improves the accuracy of simulation results. This work is useful to those who mathematically model electrochemical systems.

Abstract

We investigate whether municipal financial manager turnover is associated with accounting restatements. This analysis is motivated by the notion that suspect financial reporting could limit the ability of stakeholders to assess the use of public resources (GASB, 2006). The evidence suggests that municipalities disclosing accounting restatements are more likely to see changes in the top financial manager position than a control sample of non-restatement municipalities. Overall, our findings are consistent with associations between financial reporting quality and the labor market for municipal financial managers, and imply that governments should consider adding the prevalence of accounting failures as an input in the evaluation of top financial managers.
