Abstract

An exploratory case study examines attitudes and career aspirations of college freshmen. Findings indicate that students show almost no interest in pursuing manufacturing careers even though they are strongly interested in manufacturing concerns including the quality of American products, government policy, and labour‐management relations. Regardless of family background, income or parent′s occupation, students shared similar attitudes towards manufacturing. Also presents ways to change these attitudes and possible areas for future research.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper introduces and annotates periodical articles, monographs, and audiovisual material examining library instruction and information literacy.

Findings

The findings provide information about each source, discusses the characteristics of current scholarship, and describes sources that contain unique scholarly contributions and quality reproductions.

Originality/value

The information may be used by librarians and interested parties as a quick reference to literature on library instruction and information literacy.

Abstract

The enormous changes of recent years in the food and drink processed and marketed for our consumption has made certain that the law of the sale of food and drugs, despite its history of a hundred years, will not remain static. One would think that everything that could be interpreted and defined had been so long ago, but the law is dynamic; it is growing all the time. The statutes, at the time of their coming into operation, seem to provide for almost every contingency, yet in a few years, the Courts have modified their effect, giving to clauses new meaning, and even making new law of them. It has always been so. The High Court of Justice not only interprets the law, but from time immemorial, Her Majesty's judges have been making law. Long before Parliament became a statute‐making body, with the legal capacity to “change a man into a woman,” and the supreme court of the land, judges were making the law—the Common Law of England, which settlers during the centuries have taken to the four quarters of the world, where it has invariably grown lustily. Decisions of the Supreme Courts of these newer countries, are accepted as case law here and legal principles evolved from them have returned to enrich the law of the old country.

Abstract

The aims of this article is to analyse whether there are differences in green advertisement attitudes between high involved and low involved consumers, to compare high and low involvement consumer’s cognitive responses and affective responses towards advertisements and examine the extent of the importance on certain themes that both high involvement and low involvement consumers consider. Themes such as company image, environmental labels, and product recycling symbols. A random sample of 207 consumers was taken from Victoria (Australia). The study shows that there are differences between the two groups in terms of their attitude towards green advertising with respect to all the dimensions and the low involved customers appear to have a stronger disregard for the green advertising across all the perceptive measures towards green advertising. The findings provide useful insights to practitioners as to the type of themes preferred for green advertising.

Abstract

Coming close upon the Report of the Symposium which considered possible toxicological dangers of cosmetics and toilet preparations, held in London last November by the European Committee on Chronic Toxicity Hazards (“Eurotox”), the decision recently announced in the Commons by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Science of the Government‐aided British Industrial Biological Research Association to undertake research to ascertain if toxic hazards exist from colouring matters used in lipsticks, is a small beginning. This prompts the question of how long before “cosmetics” will be added to “food and drugs” in this country as it was in U.S.A. in the nineteen‐thirties. At present there is practically no statutory control over the constituents used in the manufacture of these commodities, the manufacture and sale of which have increased enormously in recent years.

Abstract

Statements by Lord Denning, M.R., vividly describing the impact of European Community Legislation are increasingly being used by lawyers and others to express their concern for its effect not only on our legal system but on other sectors of our society, changes which all must accept and to which they must adapt. A popular saying of the noble Lord is “The Treaty is like an incoming tide. It flows into the estuaries and up the rivers. It cannot be held back”. The impact has more recently become impressive in food law but probably less so than in commerce or industry, with scarcely any sector left unmolested. Most of the EEC Directives have been implemented by regulations made under the appropriate sections of the Food and Drugs Act, 1955 and the 1956 Act for Scotland, but regulations proposed for Materials and Articles in Contact with Food (reviewed elsewhere in this issue) will be implemented by use of Section 2 (2) of the European Communities Act, 1972, which because it applies to the whole of the United Kingdom, will not require separate regulations for England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. This is the first time that a food regulation has been made under this statute. S.2 (2) authorises any designated Minister or Department to make regulations as well as Her Majesty Orders in Council for implementing any Community obligation, enabling any right by virtue of the Treaties (of Rome) to be excercised. The authority extends to all forms of subordinate legislation—orders, rules, regulations or other instruments and cannot fail to be of considerable importance in all fields including food law.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this general review paper is to provide a comparison and evaluation of the treatment of pricing by the disciplines of economics and marketing.

Design/methodology/approach

It is from three perspectives that the marketing and economics approaches to pricing are reviewed, namely, buyers' response to price, firm's determination of price, and industry‐ or economy‐wide role of price.

Findings

A comparative review of the relevant marketing and economics literature shows that there are important differences between the two disciplines in their treatment of pricing. Marketing demonstrates a richer and more empirically based treatment of the pricing issue from the buyer's perspective, while economics is unchallenged from the economy‐wide perspective. The differences found between the marketing and economics approaches to pricing are mostly due to their different historical origins, primary concerns and doctrinal evolution. In contrast, interdisciplinary loans especially from behavioral science have made possible considerable advances in marketing, particularly in the understanding of the buyer's perspective.

Originality/value

Previous reviews of the pricing literature do not attempt to provide a direct comparison and evaluation and offer no explanation for the observed differences among the economics and the marketing disciplines regarding their treatment of the pricing issue. The value and originality of the current paper lies in the fact that it represents the first attempt to provide such a comparison and evaluation.

Abstract

IT is seldom that I can bring myself to write anything for publication, and as I had a longish article on “The education of librarians in Great Britain” printed as recently as 1964 in the Lucknow Librarian (which is edited by my friend Mr. R. P. Hingorani) I had not contemplated any further effort for some time to come. But as THE LIBRARY WORLD evidently wishes to cover all the British schools of librarianship it would be a pity for Brighton to be left out, even though, coming as it does towards the end of a gruelling series, I can see little prospect of this contribution being read. Perhaps, therefore, I need not apologise for the fact that, as my own life and fortunes have been (and still are) inextricably bound up with those of the Brighton school, any account which I write of the school is bound to be a very personal one.
