Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to help leaders and managers understand what is going on behind time-wasting behaviors they see in their teams and support them in making productive changes.
Design/methodology/approach
Taken from Time Mastery: Banish Time Management Forever by Karen Meager and John McLachlan. This study uses an integrative psychology approach drawing on modalities such as transactional analysis, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), cognitive behavioral theory (CBT) and traditional leadership models, and integrating those with the authors’ practical experience working in organizations over the past 15 years.
Findings
Team members’ time management issues can be addressed if leaders take a more holistic view of their behavior. Traditional time management approaches do not work for everyone, so leaders need to tailor their style to adapt. There are some common time-wasting behaviors that are easily addressed, once identified.
Originality/value
Taken from the newly published Time Mastery: Banish Time Management Forever by Karen Meager and John McLachlan, this study combines the psychology of how we process, communicate, and use time from a number of psychological methodologies and combines them with practical organizational case studies and experience.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to inform L&D Professionals of our research finding and the key highlights from our published book, so that they can use this information when reviewing or designing Leadership Development Programmes.
Design/methodology/approach
We wanted to discover the common themes present in successful leadership. We researched over 60 leaders from businesses of various sizes and structures. They completed a set of multiple choice questions (personality profiling questions) and then we asked them a set of open question to identify their likes/dislikes, keys to success, areas for development, values and main issues they face.
Findings
We found that the leaders profiled across a broad spectrum of personality types (from the multiple choice questions), and yet there were strong similarities in the themes in the open question answers. We concluded that successful leadership was not dependant on a personality type but could be developed and learnt while staying true to your own personality.
Research limitations/implications
We would have liked to research more leaders and define the research specifically by type of organization. As the purpose of the research was to inform our writing of a useful and practical leadership development book, we did not feel it was essential for this purpose.
Practical implications
We would like this to inform the shape of future leadership development towards a more “whole person” development and away from the traditional skills-based approach. This will support leaders to be healthier, more successful and better role models.
Social implications
Leaders are one of the most important roles in the world, and we need healthier, more rounded, emotionally regulated, more focused leaders to be appropriate role models for future generations. It is also important that a diverse range of leadership styles is accepted and developed in organizations.
Originality/value
What is new in our paper is the development of the idea, supported by our research that Leaders can be authentic and successful without the need for a personality transplant. We have brought together our research with our psychological qualifications and business experience to produce a leadership development approach that is deep in its thinking and construction but easy and practical to use and apply.

Abstract
Since the late 1970s, the study of the role, structure and functions of personnel management in the United Kingdom has been greatly facilitated by surveys emerging from a number of large‐scale surveys. A major interest in interpreting the data from these surveys has been to evaluate the impact of recession, and, latterly, recovery on the power, structure and roles of personnel departments and personnel specialists in recent years. The survey data are used comparatively to evaluate the empirical plausibility of the different scenarios which have arisen, and to account for the results that emerge.

Abstract
The monograph analyses (a) the potential impact of information technology (IT) on organisational issues that directly concern the personnel function; (b) the nature of personnel’s involvement in the decision making and activities surrounding the choice and implementation of advanced technologies, and (c) their own use of IT in developing and carrying out their own range of specialist activities. The monograph attempts to explain why personnel’s involvement is often late, peripheral and reactive. Finally, an analysis is made of whether personnel specialists – or the Human Resource Management function more generally – will play a more proactive role in relation to such technologies in the future.

Abstract
Purpose
Women’s entrepreneurship is often seen as the solution of both economic growth and gender equality. This is despite academic knowledge of the gendered preconditions for entrepreneurship in many contexts. This paper aims to focus on the gendering of commercial justice, a precondition for entrepreneurship. Informed by gender perspectives on women’s entrepreneurship and previous studies on commercial justice in East Africa, this paper sets out to explore the experiences of urban women entrepreneurs.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper is based on an interview study with women entrepreneurs and representatives of support organizations in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. The interviews were conducted in Kiswahili, and access was enabled through dialogues with local partner organizations such as the Tanzanian Chamber of Commerce.
Findings
Findings are that with formal legal rights, the informal institutions imply that the marital status of the women, and the attitude of their husbands, is the overarching determinants for the commercial justice perceived as available to them. This has implication for many policy areas, such as entrepreneurship support, women’s empowerment and labour market policy. Theoretically, the findings highlight the importance of studying the informal institutions affecting women’s entrepreneurship around the globe. Concerning commercial justice in particular, three dimensions of gendering are identified.
Research limitations/implications
The paper is based on a qualitative interview study. Further studies with varying methods are needed to further explore the gendering of commercial justice in Tanzania, East Africa and beyond.
Practical implications
A major practical implication of the study is the insight that business for development, will not automatically lead to business for equality, on a general level. The gender bias is also reproduced in everyday business life, for example, thorough access to commercial justice. Special measures to target the gender equality issue are, therefore, necessary. Another implication of the findings regard the importance of Alternative Dispute Resolution initiatives, affordable to women small and medium enterprise-owners.
Originality/value
While other obstacles to women’s entrepreneurship in the developing contexts have been well explored, the gendering of perceived commercial justice has not received sufficient attention in previous studies. Studies applying a gender theoretical perspective on entrepreneurship in the explored context are still needed.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to examine the relative importance of climate normals (average long-term temperature and precipitation) in explaining net farm revenue per hectare (NRh) for supplementary irrigated and rainfed cocoa farms in Nigeria.
Design/methodology/approach
NRh was estimated for 280 cocoa farmers sampled across seven Nigerian states. It was regressed on climate, household socio-economic characteristics and other control variables by using a Ricardian analytical framework. Marginal calculations were used to isolate the effects of climate change (CC) on cocoa farm revenues under supplementary irrigated and rainfed conditions. Future impacts of CC were simulated using Six CORDEX regional climate model (RCM) ensemble between 2036-2065 and 2071-2100.
Findings
Results indicate high sensitivity of NRh to Nigerian climate normals depending on whether farms use supplementary irrigation. Average annual temperature increases and precipitation decreases are associated with NRh losses for rainfed farms and gains for supplementary irrigated cocoa farms. Projections of future CC impacts suggest a wide range of NRh outcomes on supplementary irrigated and rainfed farm revenues, demonstrating the importance of irrigation as an effective adaptation strategy in Nigeria.
Originality/value
This paper uses novel data sets for simulating future CC impacts on land values in Nigeria. CORDEX data constitute the most comprehensive RCMs projections available for Africa.
