Abstract

Purpose

With the recent expansion of the online environment, the importance of descriptive metadata assisting in a user's purchase and selection has come to the fore. Therefore the publishing circle and libraries began discussions about mutual management in order to minimize common requirements and reiteration of efforts incurred in the process of book metadata creation and distribution. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the ONIX to KORMARC conversion algorithm currently used in Korea and to propose an advanced mechanism capable of mutually assisting and enhancing metadata of both worlds.

Design/methodology/approach

The ONIX to KORMARC conversion algorithm used in Korea was analyzed, and ONIX elements which were not used in conversion but considered necessary for KORMARC to accommodate in the future, were extracted; and then a new mechanism which consists of three scenarios was proposed, with which both ONIX and KORMARC could assist in creation and reducing deficiencies of the other.

Findings

This study extracted the ONIX descriptive elements that were considered necessary for KORMARC to accommodate in the future and proposals were made for these elements to be mapped in KORMARC. In addition a more advanced mechanism was conceived with which ONIX and KORMARC could help to eliminate any deficiences in the other.

Originality/value

The mutual enhancement mechanism proposed in this study will contribute to minimizing reiteration of efforts exerted in production and distribution by providing high‐quality book metadata at the right time, to both the publishing circle and libraries.

Abstract

Proposes to design and implement a metadata system for Myongji University (MJU) library collections that allows users to search all library materials using one user interface. Briefly introduces two MJU digital library projects, then describes the first project where a KORMARC/encoded archival description (EAD) metadata system that allows users to conduct integrated searches is to be designed, implemented and evaluated. The KORMARC/EAD metadata system consists of two modules: a retrieval module and an input module. While in the retrieve mode, one can retrieve KORMARC records of all library materials such as books and course materials, with links to EAD files for both archival items and course materials or to full‐text image files for precious books. In the input mode, users can input two types of data such as catalog data and inventory data. Finally, evaluates the proposed system via mail questionnaires, and proposes three suggestions to make this system a much more comprehensive and effective system.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of Korean books by analysing their “work types” based on the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) model.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 1,000 Korean books were randomly chosen from the Korean National Bibliography (KNB) 2008 at the National Library of Korea, and the frequency of each work type was investigated.

Findings

Of the Korean books that were studied, 16.9 per cent (single works, 2.7 per cent and multiple works, 14.2 per cent) were found to be multiple manifestations, and the rates of literature and social science works were relatively high.

Research limitations/implications

The FRBR model was applied to a sample of 1,000 Korean books and was not representative of all Korean books.

Practical implications

The usefulness of the FRBR model was found to be limited to some complex works and can be improved by applying its work types in an extended way.

Originality/value

In the study, the work types of Korean books were analysed based on the FRBR model for the first time using this model.

Abstract

As a preliminary part of the feasibility study of UseMARCON this paper introduces the history of MARC formats, identifying subsets or families among them, and provides information about their current application by different national bibliographic agencies, networks and library systems, especially in Europe. The application of MARC formats is reviewed either as internal/cataloguing formats or as exchange formats available in tape services. Special attention is paid to the actual use and trends of UNIMARC, since UNIMARC itself represents a new stage in the evolution of MARC formats, devised to improve and facilitate the exchange of bibliographic information between different systems.

It has two companion articles: one covering science, technology and medicine (STM) appeared in Online & CDROM Review vol. 20, no. 1 and the other, covering business and law (BSL), will appear in Online & CDROM Review vol. 20, no. 3. The articles are based on the newly appearing database products in the Gale Directory of Databases. Abstract

This work describes a case study that KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) has implemented to establish the NUCLIS21 (nuclear information system 21), a total Web‐based information management system (IMS) with a view to playing an active role as one of the leading national nuclear information centres. Through a user‐friendly single interface, the system aims at not only building infrastructure for the national nuclear digital information, but also improving the existing IMS at the technical information department in the KAERI. This system is designed to help users and system managers to access the system easily and to provide MyLibrary, a customised function, to a particular user. The retrieval efficiency of the system is significantly heightened due to the adoption of such state‐of‐the‐art technologies as middleware and the retrieval engine. This system was designed as a unified network system through connection to the MIS (management information system) of the Institute.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper describes a model for integrating publicly available private information concerning textual heritage on the websites of South Korean antiquarian booksellers into the information management systems of the National Library of South Korea (NLK).

Design/methodology/approach

A method for formalizing the coproduction of heritage knowledge is presented, using the NLK and textual heritage as a case study.

Findings

An investigation of the systems and services of the NLK, interviews with South Korean antiquarian booksellers and the researchers' ability to design a system (including an application profile) that will facilitate the integration of data curated by antiquarian booksellers into the systems of the NLK suggest that it is possible to formalize the coproduction of heritage knowledge.

Research limitations/implications

Although this case study is limited to describing the information management procedures of a small number of online South Korean antiquarian booksellers and a single national library, its findings have broad implications. Through discussion of a specific case, the paper identifies a large class of resources that, if acquired, circulated and conserved by public libraries, is likely to enhance the public good provided by public libraries. It also provides an example of how public libraries can better meet their obligations as service and memory institutions by building systems that enable the coproduction of heritage resources by documenting and conserving records related to heritage transactions.

Practical implications

The paper demonstrates that it is possible to create a formal system for coproducing heritage information.

Social implications

The ability of public libraries to coproduce heritage information is likely to increase the public good provided by public libraries and to make heritage resources more accessible.

Originality/value

This paper presents a novel model enabling the curation of publicly available private information about antiquarian texts by a national library to aid cultural understanding and the preservation of documents describing historical texts.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to validate the usefulness of resource description and access (RDA) from user perspectives by implementing an RDA-based bibliographic retrieval system, and comparing it against two retrieval systems.

Design/methodology/approach

Surveys and interviews were conducted to gather responses from 20 subjects who used the systems. Usability was measured according to the following metrics: search usefulness from search process and results; search efficiency, measured in time and the number of steps involved; general satisfaction for search results and process, and for information need; satisfaction for search functionalities, with five sub-measures (usability of functions of search tool, appropriateness of search results, usability of additional information, usability of associative relations, and appropriateness of search categories); and system convenience in terms of understandability and ease.

Findings

The survey results indicate that all but the satisfaction for appropriateness of search categories showed significant differences between the systems. The interviews show that the RDA system received from the subjects a more positive evaluation compared to the counterpart systems, in search usefulness, search efficiency, general search satisfaction, satisfaction for search functionalities.

Practical implications

Though a few organizations such as the Library of Congress in the USA have implemented RDA, no such endeavors have been undertaken in the context of Korean bibliography, and especially for the systematic validation of usability of such a system from user perspectives.

Originality/value

This is the first published study that validates the usefulness perceived by users of RDA in the context of Korean bibliography.
