Abstract

I had the good fortune to go to the United States for two and half months from August to October, 1950. My journey and stay there were made possible by the award of a Visiting Fellowship to the Yale Law School, by a travel grant to the U.S.A. from the U.S. Educational Commission in the United Kingdom (the Fulbright Commission), and a contribution towards maintenance and travel while in the U.S.A. by the Department of State from the Smith‐Mundt Fund. To all these authorities I would like to express my very sincere thanks. Needless to say, I was received with great kindness and given a warm welcome everywhere.

Abstract

It has often been said that a great part of the strength of Aslib lies in the fact that it brings together those whose experience has been gained in many widely differing fields but who have a common interest in the means by which information may be collected and disseminated to the greatest advantage. Lists of its members have, therefore, a more than ordinary value since they present, in miniature, a cross‐section of institutions and individuals who share this special interest.

Abstract

Mr Hiron first explained the theory of insurance as the transference of the loss of the individual to the pockets of the many by means of the operation of a common fund or pool operated by insurance companies and underwriters. Interesting historical facts were explained and the strength of the British insurance market was emphasized by the statement that one of the largest risks in the world, the liner United States, is insured for £11,000,000, more than half of which is covered in the London market.

Abstract

A glance at the Aslib Calendar printed in the monthly bulletin, Aslib Information, will show that there has been great activity in the months since the Aslib Annual Conference in September, 1953. Indeed, the Branches and the London Headquarters together have organized so many meetings that only a proportion of the papers given thereat can be included in Aslib Proceedings. In order to preserve a record of activities, however, as far as possible the names of speakers and the titles of their papers will be mentioned in these introductory pages, a note being added when the paper is printed in the issue concerned.

Abstract

Barriers to employment are a significant issue in the United States and abroad. As civil rights legislation continues to be enforced and as employers seek to diversify their workplaces, it is incumbent upon the management field to offer insights that address obstacles to work. Although barriers to employment have been addressed in various fields such as psychology and economics, management scholars have addressed this issue in a piecemeal fashion. As such, our review will offer a comprehensive, integrative model of barriers to employment that addresses both individual and organizational perspectives. We will also address societal-level concerns involving these barriers. An integrative perspective is necessary for research to progress in this area because many individuals with barriers to employment face multiple challenges that prevent them from obtaining and maintaining full employment. While the additive, or possibly multiplicative, effect of employment barriers have been acknowledged in related fields like rehabilitation counseling and vocational psychology, the Human Resource Management (HRM) literature has virtually ignored this issue. We discuss suggestions for the reduction or elimination of barriers to employment. We also provide an integrative model of employment barriers that addresses the mutable (amenable to change) nature of some barriers, while acknowledging the less mutable nature of others.

Abstract

The following classified, annotated list of titles is intended to provide reference librarians with a current checklist of new reference books, and is designed to supplement the RSR review column, “Recent Reference Books,” by Frances Neel Cheney. “Reference Books in Print” includes all additional books received prior to the inclusion deadline established for this issue. Appearance in this column does not preclude a later review in RSR. Publishers are urged to send a copy of all new reference books directly to RSR as soon as published, for immediate listing in “Reference Books in Print.” Reference books with imprints older than two years will not be included (with the exception of current reprints or older books newly acquired for distribution by another publisher). The column shall also occasionally include library science or other library related publications of other than a reference character.
