Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the vertical cooperative relationship between the core enterprise and the manufacturer within the platform ecosystem, specifically analyzing the optimal decision-making processes of both parties under the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and original brand manufacturer (OBM) modes.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses game theory to analyze the problem, considering factors such as brand value difference, cross-selling and platform empowerment. It constructs the game models for both OEM and OBM modes and discusses the selection strategies for the cooperation mode.

Findings

The results indicate that the choice of cooperation mode by the manufacturer and the core enterprise depends on the relative size of their brand values. In cases of inconsistent choices, cooperation can be improved by designing a transfer payment contract. When the brand value is constant, the product price is comprehensively affected by cross-selling revenue, price elasticity coefficient, cost coefficient of sales effort and cost coefficient of platform empowerment. The enterprise reduces the price only when the potential revenue brought by increasing product sales exceeds the marginal profit brought by increasing product pricing; otherwise, it raises the sales price.

Originality/value

The platform ecosystem is emerging as a future direction for business mode development. However, there is a paucity of research on the cooperation modes between manufacturers and core enterprises within the platform ecosystem.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a method of optimal singularity-free motion planning under multiple objectives and multiple constrains for the 6-DOF parallel manipulator, which is used as an execution mechanism for the automated docking of components.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the distribution characteristics of the Jacobian matrix determinant in local workspace are studied based on the kinematics and a sufficient and necessary condition of singularity-free path planning in local workspace is proposed. Then, a singularity-free motion path of the end-effector is generated by a fifth-order B-spline curve and the corresponding trajectories of each actuator are obtained via the inverse kinematics. Finally, several objective functions are defined to evaluate the motion path and an improved multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm-based on the Pareto archive evolution is developed to obtain the optimal singularity-free motion trajectories.

Findings

If the initial pose and the target pose of the end-effector are both singularity-free, a singularity-free motion path can be planned in the local workspace as long as all the values of each pose elements in their own directions are monotonous. The improved multi-objective particle swarm optimization (IMPSO) algorithm is effective and efficient in the optimization of multi-objective motion planning model. The optimal singularity-free motion path of the end-effector is verified in the component docking test. The docking result is that the movable component is in alignment with the fixed one, which proves the feasibility and practicability of the proposed motion path method to some extent.

Originality/value

The proposed method has a certain novelty value in kinematic multi-objective motion planning of parallel manipulators; it also increases the application prospect of parallel manipulators and provides attractive solutions to component assembly for those organizations with limited cost and that want to find an option that is effective to be implemented.

Abstract

Purpose

Additively manufactured objects have layered structures, which means post processing is often required to achieve a desired surface finish. Furthermore, the additive nature of the process makes it less accurate than subtractive processes. Hence, additive manufacturing techniques could tremendously benefit from finishing processes to improve their geometric tolerance and surface finish.

Design/methodology/approach

Rotary ultrasonic machining (RUM) was chosen as a finishing operation for drilling additively manufactured carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. Two distinct additive manufacturing methods of fused deposition modeling (FDM) and laser-assisted laminated object manufacturing (LA-LOM) were used to fabricate CFRP plates with continuous carbon fiber reinforcement. The influence of the feedrate, tool rotation speed and ultrasonic power of the RUM process parameters on the aforementioned quality characteristics revealed the feasibility of RUM process as a finishing operation for additive manufactured CFRP.

Findings

The quality of drilled holes in the CFRP plates fabricated via LA-LOM was supremely superior to the FDM counterparts with less pullout delamination, smoother surface and less burr formation. The strong interfacial bonding in LA-LOM proven to be superior to FDM was able to endure higher cutting force of the RUM process. The cutting force and cutting temperature overwhelmed the FDM parts and induced higher surface damage.

Originality/value

Overall, the present study demonstrates the feasibility of a hybrid additive and subtractive manufacturing method that could potentially reduce cost and waste of the CFRP production for industrial applications.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to estimate on-farm maize storage losses and to empirically analyse the main determinants of maize storage losses in China.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on a nationwide survey of 1,196 households in 23 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) in China, the authors estimated on-farm maize storage losses and used a fractional logit model to analyse the main determinants of maize storage losses in China.

Findings

The results showed that, first, 1.78% of maize was lost during the storage stage in China and that storage loss experienced by smallholders varied across regions. Second, the empirical analysis showed that storage quantities have significant and negative effects on storage losses and that an economy of scale in household storage may exist; the percentage of maize stored for consumption and feed has significant and positive effects on storage losses, which may be related to market requirements and management activities. Third, compared to traditional facilities, silos and warehouses cause lower storage losses, while spraying chemicals and re-drying maize in the storage stage incur higher losses, possibly because to save costs, smallholders conduct loss-reduction activities only when they suffer serious losses, and when taking measures, farmers may sort grains, which also increases losses. Fourth, harvesting maize when it matures is significantly associated with lower storage losses.

Research limitations/implications

To reduce storage losses, first, farmers' awareness of food saving and loss reduction must be increased. This could be achieved through agricultural training and education regarding food-saving practices. Second, the government could provide subsidies or low-interest credits to encourage farmers to use advanced facilities and promote land transfers to realize economies of scale. Finally, the government should accelerate the construction of smart agriculture systems and the timely monitoring of crop growth to suggest farmers to harvest at the appropriate time.

Originality/value

Reducing post-harvest loss (PHL) has become an important means of increasing the food supply and reducing resources use in China. This study provides a complete introduction to household maize storage losses and can therefore help characterize the current state of PHL in China, which is of vital importance to food security and food policy.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the moderating role of cultural factors (concern for face and stability of attribution) in the relationships among service recovery quality, postrecovery satisfaction and repurchase intention. Based on the politeness theory, this paper proposes a theoretical model for understanding how concern for face and stability of attribution may affect collectivists’ consumption behavior.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected in a field survey of 600 Hong Kong consumers who had experienced a telecommunications service failure. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to test the theoretical hypotheses.

Findings

A cultural factor of concern for face is found to negatively moderate the relationship between service recovery quality and postrecovery satisfaction. Face also positively influences the relationship between postrecovery satisfaction and repurchase intention. Another cultural factor, stability of attribution, is found to negatively moderate the relationship between service recovery quality and postrecovery satisfaction and to negatively moderate the relationship between postrecovery satisfaction and repurchase intention.

Practical implications

This study contributes to the understanding of the relevance of concern for face and stability of attribution in collectivists’ consumption behavior. The findings have significant implications for managers in a position to exploit the cultural value mechanisms of collectivist consumers.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this has been the first research to examine the impact of concern for face and stability of attribution among service recovery quality, postrecovery satisfaction and repurchase intention.

Abstract

Purpose

To explore the economical and reasonable semi-rigid permeable base layer ratio, solve the problems caused by rainwater washing over the pavement base layer on the slope, improve its drainage function, improve the water stability and service life of the roadbed pavement and promote the application of semi-rigid permeable base layer materials in the construction of asphalt pavement in cold regions.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, three semi-rigid base course materials were designed, the mechanical strength and drainage properties were tested and the effect and correlation of air voids on their performance indexes were analyzed.

Findings

It was found that increasing the cement content increased the strength but reduced the air voids and water permeability coefficient. The permeability performance of the sandless material was superior to the dense; the performance of the two sandless materials was basically the same when the cement content was 7%. Overall, the skeleton void (sand-containing) type gradation between the sandless and dense types is more suitable as permeable semi-rigid base material; its gradation is relatively continuous, with cement content? 4.5%, strength? 1.5 MPa, water permeability coefficient? 0.8 cm/s and voids of 18–20%.

Originality/value

The study of permeable semi-rigid base material with large air voids could help to solve the problems of water damage and freeze-thaw damage of the base layer of asphalt pavements in cold regions and ensure the comfort and durability of asphalt pavements while having good economic and social benefits.

Abstract

Purpose

In large-scale group decision-making (LSGDM) situations, existing TODIM group decision-making methods often fail to account for the influence of social network relationships and the bounded rationality of decision-makers (DMs). To address this issue, a new TODIM-based group decision-making method is proposed that considers the current trust relationships among DMs in a large-scale trust relationship network.

Design/methodology/approach

This method consists of two main stages. In the first stage, the large-scale group is partitioned into several sub-clusters based on trust relationships among DMs. The dominance degree matrix of each sub-cluster is then aggregated into the large-scale group dominance degree. In the second stage, after aggregating the large-scale group dominance degree, the consensus index is calculated to identify any inconsistent sub-clusters. Feedback adjustments are made based on trust relationships until a consensus is reached. The TODIM method is then applied to calculate the corresponding ranking results. Finally, an illustrative example is applied to show the feasibility of the proposed model.

Findings

The proposed method is practical and effective which is verified by the real case study. By taking into account the trust relationships among DMs in the core process of LSGDM, it indeed has an impact on the decision outcomes. We also specifically address this issue in Chapter Five. The proposed method fully incorporates the bounded rationality of DMs, namely their tendency to accept the opinions of trusted experts, which aligns more with their psychology. The two-stage consensus model proposed in this paper effectively addresses the limitations of traditional assessment-based methods.

Originality/value

This study establishes a two-stage consensus model based on trust relationships among DMs, which can assist DMs in better understanding trust issues in complex decision-making, enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of decisions, and providing more scientific decision support for organizations such as businesses and governments.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the anti-aging durability of asphalt and asphalt mixture under the conditions of inherent and improved performance. The research contents include: the mechanical properties (dynamic stability, bending strain, freeze-thaw splitting tensile strength ratio (TSR)) of different modified asphalt mixtures were tested by using the best modified asphalt.

Design/methodology/approach

The anti-aging durability of different modified asphalt was analyzed by using the results of macro tests such as penetration and softening point as evaluation indexes. Meanwhile, the change of the asphalt colloid instability index (Ic) in the aging process was used as the evaluation index to verify the results of the macroscopic test, and the best modified asphalt was obtained. On this basis, the composition of different modified asphalt mixtures was designed by using the best modified asphalt. Meanwhile, water stability was used as evaluation indexes to study the anti-aging durability of different modified asphalt mixtures.

Findings

The results show that styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified asphalt has better aging resistance. Due to the special storage time, the performance of rubber asphalt is also the best. Meanwhile, in terms of modified asphalt mixture, its high temperature performance and durability of anti-aging is as follows: 4% SBS /16% rubber modified asphalt mixture (IV) > 4% SBS modified asphalt mixture (II) > asphalt mixture (90#) (I) > 16% rubber modified asphalt mixture (III). The low temperature performance and durability of anti-aging is as follows: Ⅱ > IV > Ⅰ > Ⅲ. The water stability performance and durability of anti-aging is as follows: IV > Ⅲ > Ⅱ > Ⅰ.

Originality/value

The research results have important theoretical and guiding significance for exploring the change of intrinsic properties and improved properties of asphalt and asphalt mixture in the aging process and revealing the anti-aging mechanism of different modified asphalt mixtures.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on housing price within four major metropolitan areas in Texas: Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. The analysis intends to understand economic and mobility drivers behind the housing market under the inclusion of fixed and random effects.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a linear mixed effects model to assess the socioeconomic and housing and transport-related factors contributing to median home prices in four major cities in Texas and to capture unobserved factors operating at spatial and temporal level during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Findings

The regression results indicated that an increase in new COVID-19 cases resulted in an increase in housing price. Additionally, housing price had a significant and negative relationship with the following variables: business cycle index, mortgage rate, percent of single-family homes, population density and foot traffic. Interestingly, unemployment claims did not have a significant impact on housing price, contrary to previous COVID-19 housing market related literature.

Originality/value

Previous literature analyzed the housing market within the first phase of COVID-19, whereas this study analyzed the effects of the COVID-19 throughout the entirety of 2020. The mixed model includes spatial and temporal analyses as well as provides insight into how quantitative-based mobility behavior impacted housing price, rather than relying on qualitative indicators such as shutdown order implementation.

Abstract

Purpose

In order to give full play to the function of noise reduction of asphalt pavement, it is necessary to understand its internal sound absorption mechanism. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to establish a micro model of the pore structure of asphalt mixture with the help of finite element method (FEM), discuss the noise reduction mechanism of asphalt pavement from the micro perspective and analyze and evaluate the noise attenuation law of the pore structure.

Design/methodology/approach

The FEM was used to establish the microscopic model of the pore structure of asphalt mixture. Based on the principle of acoustics, the noise reduction characteristics of asphalt pavement were simulated. The influence of gradation and pore characteristics on the noise reduction performance of asphalt pavement was analyzed.

Findings

The results show that the open graded friction course-13 (OGFC-13) has excellent performance in noise reduction. The resonant sound absorption structure composed of its large porosity can effectively reduce the pavement noise. For asphalt concrete-13 (AC-13) and stone matrix asphalt-13 (SMA-13), the less resonant sound absorption structure makes them have poor sound absorption effect. In addition, the variation rules of noise transmission loss (TL) curve and sound absorption coefficient curve of three graded asphalt mixtures were obtained. At the same time, the peak noise reduction values of OGFC-13, AC-13 and SMA-13 were obtained, which were 650Hz, 1000Hz and 800Hz, respectively.

Originality/value

The results show that the simulation results can well reflect and express the experimental results. This will provide a reference for further exploring the sound absorption mechanism and its variation rule of porous asphalt pavement. It also has some positive significance for the application of low noise asphalt pavement.
