Abstract

Purpose

Many learning management systems and e-portfolio services that are useful for recording learners’ activities and facilitating communication among students and teachers have been proposed. However, current implementations have several problems. One major issue is that the users of the services provided by these applications are restricted to licensed users only. Another problem is that it is usually impossible for third parties to retrieve the recorded data for research purposes. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to implement a simple e-portfolio system to keep records of outputs from the students for the classes.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors developed a system called Dialogbook to help students participating in international communication courses, which provides a simple e-portfolio service and can be used from plural schools.

Findings

Before using the system in this plan of the international communication courses, the authors checked its values by using it in a mathematics course, which was provided in the university by one of the authors. This paper describes brief reports of the efficiency of the system. This system disclosed the tendencies of self-scoring by participants in the courses.

Originality/value

This paper describes the efficiency of the proposed system for international communication courses that will be held between two or more than two schools. It can be easily used with an interorganizational education project.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this paper is to investigate the strategic changes from adopting Internet‐based Interorganizational Systems (IIOS) within the logistics industry.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper reviews literature of the evolution of IIOS from Interorganizational Systems (IOS); identifies challenges encountered by the logistics industry in a new digital economy; presents an IIOS model for the logistics industry; and examines a number of strategic changes of adopting IIOS from a case study.

Findings

The paper illustrates a number of strategic changes by adopting IIOS from a case study.

Research limitations/implications

It supports the development of the IIOS model for the logistics industry; links this theoretical model into practice; and provides the direction for future research.

Practical implications

This paper is very useful for third‐party logistics providers as it helps them to understand how IIOS changes the structure of the logistics industry and alters the rules of competition.

Originality/value

This study provides a contribution in practice by linking a theoretical IIOS model for the logistics industry to a practical real case.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to present a successful strategy to promote Korea as the logistics hub of Northeast Asia. Firstly, we introduce the necessity of a logistic hub strategy for Korea. In order to develop a successful strategy, we consider the 'free trade zone' model of the Netherlands and China. We develop a realistic and suitable model for Korea based on this Jree trade zone' model. Our proposal for a successful logistic hub strategy for Korea is the fulfillment of the following six objectives: 1) security of market accessibility, 2) improvement of the logistic system, 3) improvement of the education system, 4) improvement of the tax system, 5) assurance of labor market flexibility, and 6) development of an appealing living environment for foreigners.

Abstract

The real costs of trade, the transport and other costs of doing business internationally, are very important determinants of a country's ability to participate fully in the world economy. Remoteness and poor transport and communications infrastructure isolate countries, inhibiting their participation in global production networks. This paper investigates the dependence of transport costs on geography and infrastructure It shows that infrastructure is quantitatively important in determining transport costs, and improvements in infrastructure can dramatically increase trade flows. It also finds that the low level of Northeast Asian countries' trade flows is largely due to poor infrastructure. Competition among countries in East Asia to maintain or become a logistic hub in the region is severe. This is reflected in the competition to build or expand airports and seaports in the region. Competing countries need to find ways of cooperating to achieve an efficient resource allocation in the region as a whole.
