Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to examine the effect of temporal landmarks on positive illusions and the downstream implications of this effect on consumer preference for new products with functional risks.

Design/methodology/approach

Study 1 adopted a single factor (temporal landmarks: beginning vs ending) between-subjects design. Study 2 adopted a 2 (temporal landmarks: beginning vs. ending) × 2 (salience of the temporal landmark: salient vs not salient) between-subjects design. Study 3 used a single factor (temporal landmarks: beginning vs ending) between-subjects design.

Findings

Through three studies, we show that the ending temporal landmarks reduce positive illusions (Studies 1 and 2). The underlying process is enhanced perceptions of psychological resource depletion (Study 3). The authors further show that decreased positive illusions lead consumers to less prefer new products with functional risks (Study 3).

Originality/value

Existing studies on temporal landmarks have exclusively focused on the beginning landmarks and account for its effects from a motive perspective. In contrast, the authors take a look at the ending landmarks and identify perceptions of psychological resource depletion as the underlying process, which suggests a new angel understand how temporal landmarks influence individuals' cognitions and behavior.

Abstract

For developing the control technique of air in the manned spacecraft cabin, the CO2 simulate control‐testing equipment is developed to study the CO2 removal equipment in the carbon air. The developing process is introduced in this paper. On the basis of overall design, the authors emphasize the study of the cabin interface design and draw a conclusion that disposing the entrance of the gas at the same side of the cabin content the gas intimate mixing. In the design of the flow meter, using the plastic rotor can solve the problem of flow meter pressure loss which is too much by using the glass rotor.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to monitor and guide the assembly process. The operators need to change the assembly process according to the products’ specifications during manual assembly of mass customized production. Traditional information inquiry and display methods, such as manual lookup of assembly drawings or electronic manuals, are inefficient and error-prone.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper proposes a projection-based augmented reality system (PBARS) for assembly guidance and monitoring. The system includes a projection method based on viewpoint tracking, in which the position of the operator’s head is tracked and the projection images are changed correspondingly. The assembly monitoring phase applies a method for parts recognition. First, the pixel local binary pattern (PX-LBP) operator is achieved by merging the classical LBP operator with the pixel classification process. Afterward, the PX-LBP features of the depth images are extracted and the randomized decision forests classifier is used to get the pixel classification prediction image (PCPI). Parts recognition and assembly monitoring is performed by PCPI analysis.

Findings

The projection image changes with the viewpoint of the human body, hence the operators always perceive the three-dimensional guiding scene from different viewpoints, improving the human-computer interaction. Part recognition and assembly monitoring were achieved by comparing the PCPIs, in which missing and erroneous assembly can be detected online.

Originality/value

This paper designed the PBARS to monitor and guide the assembly process simultaneously, with potential applications in mass customized production. The parts recognition and assembly monitoring based on pixels classification provides a novel method for assembly monitoring.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore Asian American students’ identities and their perceptions about who they are within the Midwestern American high school setting.

Design/methodology/approach

A naturalistic inquiry (Lincoln and Guba, 1985) is employed in this qualitative study. Naturalistic inquiry assumes that reality is constructed by individuals, and there exist multiple realities as diverse people experience teaching and learning (Glesne, 1999). It is characterized by natural settings (the schools), natural language (language actually used by students and teachers), responsiveness to concerns and issues of stakeholders (what is important to students and teachers) and collaborative checks on trustworthiness.

Findings

The study finds that the participants all identify themselves as students, while they perceive differently on their racial/ethnic and cultural identity. They have employed a variety of strategies to negotiate with their dynamic, multiple and sometimes contradictory identities when confronted with challenges and opportunities within different social contexts.

Research limitations/implications

The limitations of my study lie first in a small number of participants. Eight Asian American students do not represent the heterogeneous Asian American groups in the USA. More students would provide different perspectives and experiences in the study. The time for conducting this study is another limitation. Longer period on the research sites would provide thicker descriptions.

Practical implications

There are implications for educational practice and future research to help understand the diversity among Asian American students and to find ways to integrate accurate and comprehensive information related to Asian Americans into the curricular with critical reflection upon the issues of race, ethnicity, culture and identity.

Originality/value

This study will enrich the current literature on Asian American education because there is currently limited research in this area. It will give voices to Asian American students and contribute to a better understanding of how both students and teachers are responding to the challenges faced in many schools as demographics change. It will also have implications for teacher education and encourage awareness in this field that might affect future educational practices and policies.

Purpose

The purpose is to provide decision support for tourists recommending scenic spots and corresponding suggestions for the management of scenic spots.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the Baidu index data generated, this paper analyzes the temporal and spatial characteristics of network attention of 5A scenic spots in Sichuan Province. The online comment data are used to build the assessment model of scenic spots based on network attention, and the comment information of tourists is mined and analyzed through statistical analysis. At the same time, the key attributes of scenic spots from the perspective of network attention are evaluated and analyzed by using the probabilistic linguistic term set. Finally, this paper further constructs a recommendation model based on the key attribute set of scenic spots.

Findings

This paper uses different types of tourism network information, integrates multi-types of data and methods, fully excavates the value information of tourism network information, constructs the research framework of “scenic spot assessment + scenic spot recommendation” from the perspective of network attention, analyzes the network attention characteristics of scenic spots, evaluates the performance of scenic spots, and implements scenic spot recommendation.

Originality/value

This paper integrates multi-source data and multidisciplinary theoretical methods to form a scenic spot research framework of “assessment + recommendation” from the perspective of network attention.

The purpose of the work is to provide a comprehensive review of the digital image correlation (DIC) technique for those who are interested in performing the DIC technique in the area of manufacturing.

Originality/value

Herein, the historical development, main strengths and measurement setup of DIC are introduced. Subsequently, the basic principles of the DIC technique are outlined in detail. The analysis of measurement accuracy associated with experimental factors and correlation algorithms is discussed and some useful recommendations for reducing measurement errors are also offered. Then, the utilization of DIC in different manufacturing fields (e.g. cutting, welding, forming and additive manufacturing) is summarized. Finally, the current challenges and prospects of DIC in intelligent manufacturing are discussed.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve the accuracy and signal-to-noise ratio (SN) of a crop nitrogen sensor.

Design/methodology/approach

The accuracy and wide adaptability of two spectral calibration methods for a crop nitrogen sensor based on standard reflectivity gray plates and standard detector, respectively, were compared.

Findings

The calibration method based on standard detector could significantly improve the measurement accuracy and the SN of this crop nitrogen sensor. When compared with the method based on standard gray plates, the measurement accuracy and the SN of the crop nitrogen sensor calibrated based on the standard detector method improved by 50 and 10 per cent, respectively.

Originality/value

This research analysed the calibration problems faced by the crop nitrogen sensor (type CGMD302) based on standard gray plates, and proposed a sensor calibration method based on a standard detector. Finally, the results of the two calibration methods were compared in terms of measurement accuracy and the SN of the crop nitrogen sensor.
