This paper aims to investigate the performance of a ferrofluid-based hydrodynamic journal bearing system.
Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the performance of a ferrofluid-based hydrodynamic journal bearing system.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper presents a new design of ferrofluid-based hydrodynamic journal bearing. An experimental set-up consisting of a magnetic shaft along with a brass bearing was modified and developed. A permanent magnet was used to make the selected shaft material magnetic. The load and speed were varied to conduct the analyses for different test conditions.
Findings
The paper provides information about a design of ferrofluid-based journal bearing and its improved performances. For moderate to higher loads at different shaft speeds, it was found that because of the magnetization effect, the maximum film pressure in case of a ferrofluid lubricant increased up to approximately 60 per cent, compared with that of the conventional lubricant-based journal bearing system. Besides, the temperature rise was found smaller for ferrofluid lubricants, thus making the system cooler while running.
Originality/value
This paper offers a new design of magnetic bearing system for the experimental analysis by utilizing a magnetic shaft with a non-magnetic bearing. The present ferrofluid-based bearing design is less complicated from manufacturing point of view.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to improve hydrodynamic load-carrying capacity of a water-lubricated journal bearing by a new bush structure. Water-lubricated bearing is becoming more and more popular since it is environmentally friendly and saves energy. However, contrary to oil and grease-lubricated bearings, water-lubricated bearing is limited in many situations due to its low hydrodynamic load-carrying capacity.
Design/methodology/approach
The present article proposes a new bearing bush, with a transition-arc structure, which is favorable for increasing hydrodynamic load-carrying capacity. Hydrodynamic load-carrying capacity was calculated by means of three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (3-D CFD) analysis. Several variants of a journal bearing with a transition-arc structure of different dimensions are analyzed, while the radial clearance of the bearing, eccentricity ratio and the velocity of the journal remain unchanged.
Findings
The results show that obvious changes are found in hydrodynamic load-carrying capacity of a water-lubricated journal bearing. For different width over diameter (L/D) bearing ratios, the relationship between hydrodynamic load-carrying capacity and the magnitude of the transition-arc structure dimension is researched.
Originality/value
The research presented here leads to a design reference guideline that could be used by the designer engineer to design smart journal bearings for improving the hydrodynamic load-carrying capacity.

Abstract
Purpose
Every high speed machine, demanding high level of perfection, can operate successfully through a precise design of bearings. Such a design can be formulated after carefully studying both static and dynamic characteristics of the journal bearing. The present paper aims to describe the study of static and dynamic performance of a hole‐entry hybrid journal bearing system compensated with capillary restrictor by considering the combined influence of thermal effects and non‐Newtonian behavior of the lubricant.
Design/methodology/approach
The variation of the viscosity due to the non‐Newtonian behavior of the lubricant and temperature rise is considered in the study. The numerical solution of the generalized Reynold's, equation governing the flow of the lubricant having variable viscosity along with the energy and heat conduction equations is obtained using finite element method. The non‐Newtonian lubricant has been assumed to follow the cubic shear stress law. The study includes performance of a double row symmetric hole entry hybrid journal bearing configuration containing 12 holes per row.
Findings
The results indicate that change in viscosity of lubricant affects the bearing design parameters.
Originality/value
The paper shows that accurate theoretical modeling of the bearing is an effective tool for the selection of design parameter such as bearing land width ratio (ab), restrictor design parameter (Cs2), and non‐linearity factor (K).

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to present the theoretical and experimental investigation of the temperature of high speed and heavy haul tilting pad journal bearing.
Design/methodology/approach
The bearing is 152.15 mm in diameter with three slenderness ratios (L/D) and three clearance ratios. The equations that govern the flow and energy transport are solved by the finite difference method, and the experimental tests are conducted in a test rig of high speed and heavy haul tilting pad journal bearing. The shaft speed ranges from 3,000 to 16,500 r/min (the highest linear-velocity equals 131.4 m/s), and the three static loads are 10, 20 and 30 KN.
Findings
The comparisons between numerical results and experimental results show better correlations. It is shown in the theoretical and experimental results that the temperature increases with static load and shaft speed and decreases with clearance ratio and L/D.
Originality/value
The theoretical models presented in this paper can be used to predict the temperature of tilting pad journal bearing when the shaft’s linear velocity is up to 130 m/s.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the effect of plugging of holes on the static performance characteristics of a constant flow valve compensated hole‐entry hybrid journal bearing system operating with Newtonian and non‐Newtonian lubricants. The analysis considers the generalized Reynolds equation governing the flow of lubricant having variable viscosity in the clearance space and equation of flow of lubricant through constant flow valve restrictor. The non‐Newtonian lubricant is assumed to follow the power law. The performance characteristics are computed for the two values of power law index (n=1.0 and 0.566). The computed results indicate that the blockage of holes during operation will not be the likely causes for the imminent failure of a well‐designed non‐recessed hole‐entry hybrid journal bearing.
Design/methodology/approach
Finite element method has been used to solve generalized Reynolds equation governing the flow of lubricant having variable viscosity in the clearance space and equation of flow of lubricant through constant flow valve restrictor.
Findings
The computed results indicate that the blockage of holes during operation will not be the likely causes for the imminent failure of a well‐designed non‐recessed hole‐entry hybrid journal bearing. The bearing configuration with plugged holes provides sufficient fluid film thickness and low power requirement as less lubricant is required to be pumped in the bearing.
Originality/value
To the best of the author's knowledge, no study which considers the influence of plugging of holes on the static performance characteristics of a constant flow valve compensated hole‐entry hybrid journal bearing system operating with Newtonian and non‐Newtonian lubricant is yet available in the literature.

Abstract
Purpose
The form error of shaft and hole parts is inevitable because of the machining error caused by rotation error of tool axis in machine tools where the elliptical form error is the most common in shaft and bearing bush. The purpose of this paper is to present the relationship between the elliptical form error and rotation accuracy for hydrostatic journal bearing in precision spindle and rotation table.
Design/methodology/approach
An error averaging effect model of hydrostatic journal bearing is established by using Reynolds equation, pressure boundary conditions, flux continuity equation of the land and kinetic equation of shaft in hydrostatic journal bearing. The effects of shaft and bearing bush on rotation accuracy were analyzed quantitatively.
Findings
The results reveal that the effect of shaft elliptical form error on rotation accuracy was six times larger than bearing bush. Therefore, to improve the rotation accuracy of hydrostatic journal bearing in spindle or rotation table, the machining error of shaft should be controlled carefully.
Originality/value
An error averaging model is proposed to evaluate the effect of an elliptical form error on rotation accuracy of hydrostatic journal bearings, which solves the Reynolds equation, the flux continuity equation and the kinetic equation. The determination of form error parameters of shaft and bearing bush can be yielded from finding results of this study for precision design of hydrostatic journal bearings.

Abstract
Purpose
The present paper aims to analyse the synergistic effect of pocket orientation and piezo-viscous-polar (PVP) lubrication on the performance of multi-recessed hybrid journal bearing (MHJB) system.
Design/methodology/approach
To simulate the behaviour of PVP lubricant in clearance space of the MHJB system, the modified form of Reynolds equation is numerically solved by using finite element method. Galerkin’s method is used to obtain the weak form of the governing equation. The system equation is solved by Gauss–Seidal iterative method to compute the unknown values of nodal oil film pressure. Subsequently, performance characteristics of bearing system are computed.
Findings
The simulated results reveal that the location of pressurised lubricant inlets significantly affects the oil film pressure distribution and may cause a significant effect on the characteristics of bearing system. Further, the use of PVP lubricant may significantly enhances the performance of the bearing system, namely.
Originality/value
The present work examines the influence of pocket orientation with respect to loading direction on the characteristics of PVP fluid lubricated MHJB system and provides vital information regarding the design of journal bearing system.

Abstract
Purpose
Hybrid conical journal bearings have received great attraction by design engineers and researchers due to their incomparable performance. However, performance of these bearings is affected due to wear. This paper aims to present an analytical study concerning the performance of hole entry worn hybrid conical journal bearings.
Design/methodology/approach
The Reynolds equation governing the flow of lubricant in the clearance space along with the restrictor flow equations has been solved using finite element method.
Findings
The numerically simulated results of worn bearing performance parameters indicate significant change in the performance due to wear. Therefore, for semi cone angle γ = 25°, the value of C¯22 reduces by 24.6 per cent at the wear value of about 50 per cent of radial clearance for the given configuration of bearing.
Originality/value
The present results are original of its kind and surely useful to bearing designers and researchers in predicting actual performance of worn hole entry hybrid conical journal bearing.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present theoretical investigations of the static performance characteristics of orifice compensated symmetric hole‐entry hybrid journal bearing considering the combined influence of rise in temperature and non‐Newtonian behavior of the lubricant.
Design/methodology/approach
The thermohydrostatic (THS) rheological solution of a hole‐entry hybrid journal bearing system requires the simultaneous solution of Reynolds equation, energy equation and conduction equation along with appropriate boundary conditions. In the present study an iterative numerical solution scheme is used to establish pressure and temperature fields in the lubricant fluid‐film.
Findings
It is found that there is an increase in the oil requirement for a hybrid journal bearing with the specified operating and geometric parameters, when the viscosity of the lubricant decreases due to the rise in temperature and non‐Newtonian behavior of the lubricant.
Originality/value
The available literature concerning the orifice compensated symmetric hybrid/hydrodynamic journal bearings indicates that the thermal effects together with non‐Newtonian behavior of lubricant due to additives mixed in the lubricants have been ignored in the analysis so as to obviate the mathematical complexity.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to numerically investigate the time-varying mixed lubrication performance of microgroove journal-thrust coupled bearing (MJTCB) under nonlinear excitation.
Design/methodology/approach
A three degree of freedom (3-DOF) dynamic model of the rotor coupling with the transient mixed lubrication behavior is established. Based on numerical predictions, the role of the microgroove on the time-varying mixed lubrication performance of MJTCB is identified. The effects of the microgroove depth, microgroove shape and external load on the time-varying mixed lubrication performance of MJTCB are also studied.
Findings
Numerical results show that the effect of the coupling hydrodynamic on the time-varying mixed lubrication performance of the coupled bearing is strengthen with the increasing of microgroove depth. Furthermore, it is found that the optimal microgroove shape for the thrust bearing, arc or rectangle, highly depends on the microgroove depth. Finally, the contact performance of the thrust bearing is slightly affected by the radial external load.
Originality/value
This study is expected to achieve a better understanding of the time-varying mixed lubrication performance of MJTCB under nonlinear excitations.
