Abstract

There has been much research focusing on contracting and its effect on individual voluntary sector organisation, and some mapping of the extent of voluntary sector participation in joint community care planning. Each of these is a new and formal relationship with the statutory sector, and in many cases the tasks are fulfilled by the same voluntary sector worker (usually the senior paid officer of the agency). But the impact that these two new relationships have on the voluntary organisation’s perception of its dependence and inter‐dependence has received less attention. The paper will draw on structured interviews in three local authorities, with voluntary sector participants in contracts for social care, and with participants in joint community care planning groups, as well as on documentary research. It will explore the impact of the evolving roles for those seeking to operate effectively in the pluralist provision of public services. It will analyse experiences within joint community care planning structures, and will analyse experiences of contractual relationships. The paper will seek to identify the elements present in each research site which influence the culture of joint working within the two statutory/ voluntary relationships.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a strategy for the final assembly of helicopter fuselage with weak rigidity parts and mismatched jointing butt ends.

Design/methodology/approach

The strategy is based on path planning methods. Compared with traditional path planning methods, the configuration-space and collision detection in the method are different. The obstacles in the configuration-space are weakly rigid and allow continuous contact with the robot. The collision detection is based on interference magnitudes, and the result is divided into no collision, weak collision and strong collision. Only strong collision is unacceptable. Then a compliant jointing path planning algorithm based on RRT is designed, combined with some improvements in search efficiency.

Findings

A series of planning results show that the efficiency of this method is higher than original RRT under the same conditions. The effectiveness of the method is verified by a series of simulations and experiments on two sets of systems.

Originality/value

There are few reports on the automation technology of helicopter fuselage assembly. This paper analyzes the problem and provides a solution from the perspective of path planning. This method contains a new configuration-space and collision detection method adapted to this problem and could be intuitive for the jointing of other weakly rigid parts.

This study proposes targeted modernization of the Department of Defense (DoD's) Joint Forces Ammunition Logistics information system by implementing the optimized innovative information technology open architecture design and integrating Radio Frequency Identification Device data technologies and real-time optimization and control mechanisms as the critical technology components of the solution. The innovative information technology, which pursues the focused logistics, will be deployed in 36 months at the estimated cost of $568 million in constant dollars. We estimate that the Systems, Applications, Products (SAP)-based enterprise integration solution that the Army currently pursues will cost another $1.5 billion through the year 2014; however, it is unlikely to deliver the intended technical capabilities.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to describe how knowledge management (KM) in planning can support the sustainability of innovation in a hybrid, joint-use facility. The case study research studies ImaginOn, a 15 year-old children’s library and theater for young people in Charlotte, NC.

Design/methodology/approach

This research used KM model analysis of qualitative data about tacit-explicit knowledge, intellectual capital (IC) and cognitive modes of collaboration. Both historic documents and primary data (from field study observations, interviews and a questionnaire) were analyzed for informal KM practices. Semi-structured and unstructured interview questions about innovation were used.

Findings

This study found evidence of tacit knowledge sharing, the growth of IC and the operationalization of collaboration to promote innovation. Although traditional KM terms were not used by staff, an integrated model framework demonstrates how KM practices promote innovation in planning joint-use facilities.

Practical implications

Although a study of a diverse cultural collaboration rather than two libraries, the KM practices that supported innovation and collaboration in this hybrid, joint-use facility might be applied to libraries. Future KM model research on joint-use organizations could investigate merged businesses, government programs and non-profits.

Social implications

The library and theater institutions in ImaginOn impact the lives of children and parents in meaningful ways that support community understanding, art, diversity and social interaction.

Originality/value

Research on joint-use libraries began in the 1960s. This case study provides unique model analysis of KM practices in a hybrid, joint-use facility (a library and theater). The innovative success and sustainability of ImaginOn illustrates the application of KM for strategic planning and aligning IC and business assets.

Abstract

Purpose

To provide empirical evidence on the level of savings that can be attained by joint route planning and how these savings depend on specific market characteristics.

Design/methodology/approach

Joint route planning is a measure that companies can take to decrease the costs of their distribution activities. Essentially, this can either be achieved through horizontal cooperation or through outsourcing distribution to a logistics service provider. The synergy value is defined as the difference between distribution costs in the original situation where all entities perform their orders individually, and the costs of a system where all orders are collected and route schemes are set up simultaneously to exploit economies of scale. This paper provides estimates of synergy values, both in a constructed benchmark case and in a number of real‐world cases.

Findings

It turns out that synergy values of 30 per cent are achievable. Furthermore, intuition is developed on how the synergy values depend on characteristics of the distribution problem under consideration.

Practical implications

The developed intuition on the nature of synergy values can help practitioners to find suitable combinations of distribution systems, since synergy values can quickly be assessed based on the characteristics of the distribution problem, without solving large and difficult vehicle routing problems.

Originality/value

This paper addresses a major impediment to horizontal cooperation: estimating operational savings upfront.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of different dimensions of supply chain integration on performance, while considering both the interconnections between these supply chain integration dimensions and the effect of context. Specifically, the authors investigate the relationship between two enablers (communication infrastructure and cooperative behaviour) and two practices (planning information and joint improvement), and the moderating effect of supply complexity on their relationship with performance.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey among 145 Dutch and Spanish manufacturers is used to gather data on the buyer‐supplier relationship. Both the sample and two subsamples – for high and low supply complexity – are analysed using SmartPLS.

Findings

The paper finds that two dimensions – communication infrastructure and cooperative behaviour – enable the two collaborative practices: joint improvement and planning information. All mentioned supply chain integration dimensions, except joint improvement are related to performance, but specifically if the supply complexity is high. Among these dimensions the effect of cooperative behaviour is relatively high.

Originality/value

This paper adds to our understanding of how contingencies influence the supply chain. It is the first paper that investigates the moderating effect of the complexity of the process of delivery (supply complexity) on the effectiveness of supply chain integration practices.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present an optimal trajectory planning for industrial MOTOMAN MA1440A gas metal arc welding system. A new and efficient evolutionary algorithm, enhanced multi-objective teaching learning-based optimization (EMOTLBO) method, i.e. TLBO with non-dominated sorting approach has been proposed to obtain the optimal joint trajectory for the defined weld seam path.

Design/methodology/approach

The joint trajectory of the welding robot need to be computed in an optimal manner for proper torch orientation, smooth travel of the robot along the weld path and for achieving higher positional accuracy. This can be achieved by limiting the kinematic and dynamic variations of the robot joints like joint jerks, squared acceleration and torque induced in the joints while travel of the robot along the weld path. Also, the robot travel should be done within minimum possible time for maintaining productivity. This leads to a multi-objective optimization problem which needs to be solved for maintaining proper orientation of the robot end effector. EMOTLBO has been proposed to obtain the Pareto front consisting of optimal solutions. The fuzzy membership function has been used to obtain the optimal solution from the Pareto front with best trade-off between objectives.

Findings

The proposed method has been implanted in MATLAB R2017a for simulation results. The joint positions have been used to program the robot for performing welding operation along the weld seam. From the simulation and experimental results, it can be concluded that the proposed approach can be effectively used for optimal trajectory planning of MOTOMAN MA 1440 A arc welding robot system as a very smooth and uniform weld bead has been obtained with maximum weld quality.

Originality/value

In this paper, a novel approach for optimal trajectory planning welding arc robot has been performed. Though trajectory planning of industrial robots has been done before, it has not been done yet for welding robot. The objectives are formulated taking in consideration of requirement of welding process like minimization of joint jerks and torques induced during welding operation due to travel of robot with the effect of arc spatter, minimization of squared acceleration for maintaining constant joint velocity and finally minimization of total travel time for maintaining productivity.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose an efficient path and trajectory planning method to solve online robotic multipoint assembly.

Design/methodology/approach

A path planning algorithm called policy memorized adaptive dynamic programming (PM-ADP) combines with a trajectory planning algorithm called adaptive elite genetic algorithm (AEGA) for online time-optimal path and trajectory planning.

Findings

Experimental results and comparative study show that the PM-ADP is more efficient and accurate than traditional algorithms in a smaller assembly task. Under the shortest assembly path, AEGA is used to plan the time-optimal trajectories of the robot and be more efficient than GA.

Practical implications

The proposed method builds a new online and efficient path planning arithmetic to cope with the uncertain and dynamic nature of the multipoint assembly path in the Cartesian space. Moreover, the optimized trajectories of the joints can make the movement of the robot continuously and efficiently.

Originality/value

The proposed method is a combination of time-optimal path planning with trajectory planning. The traveling salesman problem model of assembly path is established to transfer the assembly process into a Markov decision process (MDP). A new dynamic programming (DP) algorithm, termed PM-ADP, which combines the memorized policy and adaptivity, is developed to optimize the shortest assembly path. GA is improved, termed AEGA, which is used for online time-optimal trajectory planning in joints space.

Abstract

Purpose

Grounded in contingency theory and strategic fit theory, the goal for this research was to determine if managers differentiate in terms of the degree of partnership when allocating resources for planning, joint operating controls, communication and other management components to relationships and if this differentiation is based on the Partnership Model (Lambert et al., 1996).

Design/methodology/approach

In total, 381 managers representing 31 relationships participated in one-and-a-half-day partnership meetings, and the authors analyzed how the management components were implemented in each relationship compared to the recommendations in the Partnership Model.

Findings

Managers did not differentiate types of partnerships which led to over-resourcing relationships with low potential and under-resourcing those with the highest potential for creating value. The principles of contingency theory and strategic fit were not used for managing relationships.

Research limitations/implications

Contingency theory combined with the relationship view suggests that management components should not be implemented at the same level for all relationships, but in the 31 relationships studied different partnership types were not managed based on their potential.

Practical implications

The research reinforces the need for a formal structure like the Partnership Model to establish joint goals for a relationship and guide management in implementation.

Originality/value

Effective supply chain management depends on the ability of managers to differentiate among partnership types and fit relational mechanisms that are appropriate. However, researchers tend to generalize their findings to all partnerships regardless of potential. The authors found support for the Partnership Model published in IJLM in 1996 as a method to resource different types of partnerships following the contingency perspective and strategic fit theory.
