Abstract

The following proposals for cataloguing are based upon the practical treatment of gramophone records, arrived at by experiment, test, and revision in the only library in England that can claim to be of national scope in the sense, mutatis mutandis, in which that term can be applied to the British Museum, that is, the British Broadcasting Corporation's Gramophone Library, and the illustrations have been provided from its catalogue by courtesy of the Corporation. Time, and a seven days a week service extended to all departments and locations of the B.B.C. have imposed a few modifications, but after ten years the general principles stand as they were evolved during the war, when demands of service were greater and more exacting than ever before, and they have been able to accommodate the greatest and most far‐reaching change in commercial‐record history—the invention of the slow‐speed, long‐playing record, which came upon the market only after the war was over.

Abstract

Dr. John Peter Burden, assistant managing director of Cray Valley Products Ltd., visited China recently at the invitation of the China International Trust & Investment Corporation (CITIC). Dr. Burden visited the Canton Fair, and various Ministries in the capital Beijing (formerly Peking). The main purpose of the visit was discussions with representatives of the surface coatings industry of Liaoning Province in the city of Shenyang (formerly Mukden) in north east China. This was the first visit by any representative from C.V.P. to the People's Republic of China. The discussions covered a wide range of subjects within the surface coatings field, and as was expected, the discussions were very searching and detailed. Dr. Burden reports that the contacts at all levels were on a most friendly basis and conducted with charm and expertise. It was evident that a considerable amount of homework had been done by the Chinese, and that they have very clear objectives for trading with Western partners which will require considerable flexibility on the part of those wishing to do business with the People's Republic of China.

Abstract

With reference to the report of the Annual General Meeting of the Pure Food and Health Society of Great Britain, which was published in the February issue of THE BRITISH FOOD JOURNAL, and to the speech delivered by MR. GOSLIN upon the proper handling and purveying of meat, an article which has subsequently appeared in The Standard is of considerable interest. It is pointed out that no one who gives the matter serious consideration can approve of the present methods. “Many years ago Oxford made its protest against carcasses or joints being exposed in open‐fronted shops. It is just possible that when the powers that were objected to and forbade this proceeding they thought more of the æsthetics than the science of it, but they most certainly did a good thing when they took flesh foods away from the contamination of street dust and the variations of temperature that are dependent on every gust of wind or every moment of sunlight or shadow.”

Abstract

The duties of the Public Analyst necessarily bring him more or less into contact with the members of his local authority. His work, like that of the other chief officers, is dealt with by one or more Committees before the results as a whole are submitted to the Council. The actual part played by the Committee or Committees depends on the will of the Council, and is in no way laid down by law. One thing is quite clear, namely, that the jurisdiction of the Committee and of the Council only extends the proceedings prior, and subsequent to the analysis of the samples. The nature of the analyses, the scientific methods employed, and the opinions based on the analytical results are entirely in the hands of the Public Analyst himself. The authority may not agree with him, and may not follow his advice, but unless there is very strong reason for doubting his competence, it is their duty to avail themselves of his expert knowledge and experience, and he is obliged to place his services at their disposal in these directions however inadequately he may be paid.

Abstract

We investigate whether limited investor attention is a factor in the effectiveness of institutional shareholder activism. Prior research has shown that an inability of market participants to allocate sufficient intellectual effort to the investment decision can have an impact on market price and volume behavior. We extend this research in an applied setting by considering the effectiveness of the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) focus list, whose aim is to improve the performance and corporate governance of target firms. We find that the share price and volume response to being included in the focus list is a function of the investor attention in a stock, which in turn has an impact on the subsequent managerial response. This suggests that when attention is a scarce cognitive resource, the proactive exploitation of news signals can be an efficient activism strategy.

Abstract

Ministry of Health, Whitehall, S.W. 1. 12th June, 1924. SIR, I am directed by the Minister of Health to state that on consideration of communications received through the Foreign Office from the Government of the Latvian Republic, he has decided to recognise as an Official Certificate for the purposes of the Public Health (Foreign Meat) Regulations a label and mark issued by the Government of that country. He has accordingly caused to be published in the London Gazette of the 30th May, 1924, a Notice containing in the schedule a description of the label and mark which is declared to be admissible as an “Official Certificate” in respect of pork and other edible portions of the pig, which have been subjected to inspection in the Latvian Republic.
