Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the structural and process integration mechanisms used by firms to form a hybrid mode of supply chain governance referred to as supply chain value integration (SCVI).

Design/methodology/approach

The authors employ a multi‐method approach, conducting depth interviews following the grand touring technique to develop the model, and survey methodology to test the model using partial least squares approach for structural path estimation.

Findings

SCVI is a multi‐dimensional concept comprised of two second‐order constructs, SCVI infrastructure and SCVI process, each comprised of three first‐order constructs, that lead to joint value creation and improved supply chain performance.

Practical implications

Dependent suppliers striving to compete on value creation can adopt bonding behavior by establishing an integrative infrastructure comprised of people, technology, and knowledge components, which balances the level of dependence and motivates the customer to engage in integrative processes.

Originality/value

The authors expand on previous models of integration by developing and testing a comprehensive multi‐dimensional theory of SCVI that explains the relationships between resource dependency theory, resource‐based view of the firm, and relational exchange theory.

Abstract

Purpose

The concept of supply chain orientation (SCO) has been described in multiple ways in previous research. The purpose of this paper is to integrate previous descriptions and further develop the structural element of SCO including the areas of organizational design, human resources, information technology, and organizational measurement.

Design/methodology/approach

A literature review is used to identify previous descriptions of SCO and present a framework to more completely describe the concept.

Findings

SCO cannot be understood without incorporating both a firm's strategic intention to compete via supply chain capabilities and the firm's internal structural elements.

Research limitations/implications

This is a conceptual study undertaken to develop a comprehensive framework incorporating SCO concepts. Although the framework is developed from the existing literature, further research is necessary to test the extended view of the concept.

Practical implications

The paper provides a template for understanding a firm's current SCO, and may be a useful roadmap for firms wishing to develop a greater SCO.

Originality/value

Little research has been published surrounding the concept of SCO. The paper integrates previous descriptions by incorporating both strategic and structural views, and by explaining the antecedent elements internal to the firm that are required to form a SCO.

Abstract

In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management. This volume, in conjunction with Volume I, provides a guide to all the material published so far.

Abstract

Despite the growing importance of logistics in corporate strategy and the global economy, the logistics literature reveals little effort to build a unified theory of logistics (i.e. a theory of the role of logistics in the firm). Thus, the purpose of this paper is to move toward a unified theory of logistics within the contexts of the strategic role and capabilities of logistics. Considering the importance of logistics in today's corporate strategy, various theories of the firm are adapted to explain the reasons for logistics activities within the firm. The proposed theory should serve as a conceptual reference point for future theory development and empirical research in logistics.

Abstract

The term deregulation, in reference to the (US) Motor Carrier Act 1980, has been used to represent significant reductions in government economic restrictions and government agency involvement in the operations of the transportation industry. Although the Act was a giant step toward regulatory reform, a good deal of statutory regulation did initially remain in place. For the purposes of this article, the term deregulation will be used with the understanding that the deregulated industry is not completely without regulation.

Abstract

Purpose

Global supply chains are more risky than domestic supply chains due to numerous links interconnecting a wide network of firms. These links are prone to disruptions, bankruptcies, breakdowns, macroeconomic and political changes, and disasters leading to higher risks and making risk management difficult. The purpose of this paper is to explore the phenomenon of risk management and risk management strategies in global supply chains.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is based on an extensive literature review and a qualitative study comprising 14 in‐depth interviews and a focus group meeting with senior supply chain executives.

Findings

The study provides insights into the applicability of six risk management strategies with respect to environmental conditions and the role of three moderators.

Research limitations/implications

The model is developed in a global manufacturing supply chain context. It should be tested in other contexts and with other methods to provide generalizability. The study takes a much needed step toward building a theory of risk management in global supply chains, which opens important future research directions.

Practical implications

This research provides direction to managers for choosing risk management strategies based on the global supply chain environment. Moderators have practical implications for global supply chain managers.

Originality/value

The paper addresses an identified gap in the literature for selecting risk management strategies in global supply chains. It employs grounded theory, a methodology appropriate for theory‐building, to explore a phenomenon with an inadequate theoretical base.

Abstract

One concern for logistics managers is the use of new technology. Such an example of technology utilization is the use of computers by managers in logistics. Investigates the nature and extent to which mainframe and personal computers are used by logistics management, in contrast to the related business area of marketing. National samples of logistics and marketing professionals responded to a mail survey questionnaire to test hypotheses concerning factors related to the availability of different computer equipment in their organizations and differences between logistics and marketing professionals′ computer access and sources for learning to use computers. The results document widespread availability of sophisticated technology, although the logistics professionals appear to lead the marketing professionals in availability of various hardware. Logistics and marketing professionals also use different methods to learn the use of computers. Further, corporate size and industry are related to computer access. Discusses the implications of these findings.
