The island of Arran is situated in the Firth of Clyde astride the Highland Boundary fault zone. It is 19 miles long by 10 miles wide. Although similar in size to the Isle of Wight it has only a twenty‐fifth of that island's population. The number of inhabitants in 1981 (4743) is almost the same as in 1755 (4600). The island's population reached its highest level in 1821 (6541) and fell steadily for the rest of the century, reaching a figure similar to its present level in 1911.

Glasgow Caledonian University Library has a culture of evaluation dating back to the mid‐1990s. The article examines the qualitative research methodologies which have been used, the issues that have arisen and details the management response. Thus it demonstrates how performance measurement is an essential part of the quality management and the continuous improvement of the university library and is an essential tool in planning the future service.

Although Herefordshire does not have long traditions of rural library provision two experiments took place in the 1890s. (1) In 1894, the newly founded Colwall Parish Council started providing a wide range of services, including a rate supported library from 1899. The problems of library administration within the framework of parochial government are examined. (2) From 1899 John Percival, bishop of Hereford, provided an itinerating library service based on ecclesiastical parishes. Although reorganised and extended in 1906 it proved expensive to operate and met with hostility from community leaders. It pioneered features found in the later county library service.

This paper provides an overview of automation at Glasgow College Library since the 1970s when a subject index was prepared using punched cards. The Dynix library system was purchased in 1988. Details are given of how retrospective cataloguing was carried out using OCLC's RETROCON service and how OCLC MARC records are downloaded into the catalogue database in the Dynix system. An example is included of a search using the OPAC subject index.

At almost 1,500 feet above sea level Wanlockhead is the highest village in Scotland, lying in the Lowther Hills some eight miles above Sanquhar in Nithsdale and a similar distance from Abington in Lanarkshire, above the Clyde Valley. The name of its close neighbour, Leadhills, gives the clue to why inhabitants could have been induced to settle in such a remote, bleak and inhospitable location, for lead had been mined in the area since the Middle Ages. It was during the Seventeenth Century that mining in the area became a significant activity and in the Eighteenth Century the numbers of miners and their employees increased dramatically and social and village life developed.

The results of a further survey of academic library OPAC subject indexing practices are presented. These results are discussed in relation to a high reported demand for subject searching facilities, and strategies presently adopted by various libraries examined. The further possibilities of local OPAC subject indexing are discussed.

Determining the attributes of effective business teachers is critical to schools as they strive to attract and retain students, assure learning, obtain and maintain reputation and accreditations, and place their alumni in the competitive job market. The purpose of this paper is to examine students and faculty perceptions of teaching effectiveness in five culturally disparate countries: Colombia, France, Lebanon, Sweden, and the USA.

A survey was designed based on previous research complemented by an extensive literature review as well as personal communications with faculty in different international business schools. The survey considered 39 teaching attributes related to three specific dimensions: class delivery, class preparation and design, and instructional traits and personal characteristics. The survey targeted students and faculty from seven business schools located in five countries.

This study offers new conceptual and analytical analyses from a cross-country comparative perspective. Rankings of the importance of perceived teaching attributes for both major groups involved in the teaching of business, faculty and students, are reported. The attributes are also ranked by teaching taxonomy and examined across countries.

This study provides practical results that can be useful to instructors wishing to increase their teaching effectiveness and to universities considering revising their student evaluation forms.

This study includes data collected from faculty and students from several schools located in culturally disparate countries and, thus, increases the applicability of the results in a cross-cultural manner and provides implications for practice internationally.

Industrial buyers' willingness to buy foreign products is influenced in proportion to the political freedom of the country of origin, as opposed to its level of economic development. Countries at the same level of development as the buying country are perceived more or less favourably according to degree of political freedom. US buyers, for this reason, seem to favour Japan out of ten South East Asian countries, according to a random sample drawn from a membership list of a leading purchasing managers' association. The most favoured sources of products are those countries which are both developed and free.

Too frequently in our discussions, we school administrators show an interest in administration as a “way of doing things” or as a means towards greater efficiency. Unless we become more interested in the theory of administration and in the setting of clearly defined goals, we are likely to find that, whilst more and more administrators show an interest in learning their craft, our schools will suffer as teachers continue to develop an attitude that is more concerned with the maintenance of the institution for its own sake than with the provision of a service to education as a whole.

This paper considers the assessment and enhancement of student feedback within a University Library context. It examines the assessment of the overall experience of the student of the university as a whole and the role that the library plays in that. Lessons can be learned from the article about the role of the information service in supporting the mission of the parent organisation.
