Abstract
This study examined how government investment affects venture capital (VC) development and entrepreneurial activities. Using data from 1992 to 2012 in China, I investigated the causal impact of the government investment in VC with a natural experimentation research design. More specifically, I studied the how the onsite of a policy that allows government to invest in VC industry induces change on VC fundraising and VC investment. The results indicated that the initiation of a government investment policy could insert an immediate positive impact on VC fundraising, while it also induced a gradual significant change on the entrepreneurship financing of local start-ups.

The objective of this chapter is to analyze China’s outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) to the European Union in environmental industries.
Abstract
Purpose
The objective of this chapter is to analyze China’s outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) to the European Union in environmental industries.
Methodology/approach
We combine a narrative approach with statistical analysis. We first review the policy background concerning China’s OFDI and environmental protection. Then, we provide statistics on China’s OFDI to the EU in environmental industries, using firm-level data from one of China’s major provinces: Jiangsu.
Findings
We find that the OFDI to the EU in environmental industries experienced a considerable growth in terms of number of investing firms and investment value. The OFDI in environmental industries to the EU was highly concentrated in a few countries, particularly Germany and Luxemburg, and a few industries, particularly new energy.
Research limitations
Using firm-level data from only one province may limit the generalizability of our findings. However, we believe the case of Jiangsu province sheds much light on the situation of entire China because Jiangsu is one of the most important Chinese provinces in terms of OFDI.
Practical implications
The detailed analysis of our Jiangsu’s OFDI in EU’s environmental industries in this chapter can help to inform the investment cooperation in environmental industries between China and EU in terms of both scope of investment partners and target industries.
Originality/value
This study is one of the first to provide a detailed summary statistics on China’s OFDI to the EU in environmental industries. Given China’s growing concerns regarding environmental protection and OFDI, we believe the question merits further analysis.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine farmer preference for swine price index insurance in China focusing on whether Chinese farmers are willing to consider purchasing swine price index insurance, the premium they would like to pay, as well as the extend of heterogeneity in their preferences.
Design/methodology/approach
A sample of 443 swine farmers in Jiangsu and Henan provinces is collected and analyzed. An Ordered Probit model is used to analyze farmers’ willingness to buy swine price index insurance and a Tobit model is used to analyze farmers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for insurance premium.
Findings
Results show that some farmers are not willing to purchase swine price index insurance. However, WTP of majority of farmers is higher than what is prescribed in the current insurance policy. Factors affecting farmers’ willingness to buy varied between two provinces. Experience in purchasing traditional swine insurance and risk perception affect farmers’ willingness to buy in Jiangsu province, while joining agricultural cooperatives, experience in purchasing traditional swine insurance and understanding of swine price index insurance affect farmers’ willingness to buy in Henan province. Farmers with non-agricultural income, longer years of swine breeding, higher degree of specialization, experience in purchasing traditional insurance, higher understanding of swine price index insurance and trust in local governments, stronger risk perception and risk preference, and not being a member of agricultural cooperatives have higher WTP.
Originality/value
Few studies have been conducted on swine price index insurance in China. Even less information, to the authors’ knowledge, is available on farmer preferences. The research provides a timely contribution to understand the Chinese swine price index insurance market from the perspectives of farmers.

The purpose of this paper is to fill a knowledge gap by examining the changes in fruit and vegetable consumption of Chinese households.
Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to fill a knowledge gap by examining the changes in fruit and vegetable consumption of Chinese households.
Design/methodology/approach
Using 1993 and 2001 household survey data from three selected provinces in China, the authors estimated a quantile regression (QR) model to demonstrate how changes of fresh fruit and vegetable consumption over time may differ across regions, and additionally, how these changes may differ over the entire distribution.
Findings
Results show significant increases in fresh fruit consumption for all provinces; in addition, the pattern of changes over time differs across the entire distribution. In contrast, significant decreases of fresh vegetable consumption are evident, and results are robust across regions; however, the disparities of fresh vegetable consumption across regions are not significant.
Research limitations/implications
The results may shed some light on the national food policy. First, any food policy that may affect prices of fresh fruits and vegetables will likely affect households in lower percentiles more than those in upper percentiles. In addition, based on the findings, households in Guangdong may have a higher risk of inadequate fruit consumption. Lower level consumption of fruits in Guangdong may be caused by its relatively high prices of fruits and perhaps the shifting consumption pattern to a more meat‐based diet as income increases.
Originality/value
There has been considerable interest in estimating food demand structure in China due to its huge market for food products. However, little is known about the fruits and vegetables products. In addition, most of the previous studies used the linear regression‐type model for analysis, which fails to capture the effects of the exogenous factors on the entire distribution. To fill the knowledge gap, this paper uses a QR model with the different‐in‐difference method to examine the changes in fruit and vegetable consumption of Chinese households.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper seeks to address the appropriateness and effectiveness of technology transfer based on the extant literature reviews and the structured survey data in Jiangsu, Henan and Xinjiang, China.
Design/methodology/approach
Structured survey followed by a correlation analysis with the CORREL function in Excel.
Findings
This paper describes a structured survey undertaken in Jiangsu Province, Henan Province and Xinjiang Autonomous Region, PRC, which examines a particular aspect of technology transfer within Sino‐foreign joint ventures. The findings suggested important implications for the relationship between technology transfer and economic development. Moreover, the identification of the peculiarities of both technology transfer and knowledge transfer has led to the thorough examination of appropriateness and effectiveness of technology transfer. This study is thought‐provoking in establishing the blockage of tacit knowledge transfer and suggests means by which tacit knowledge transfer could be improved. In addition, it also leads the way for the introduction of systematic processes that could be specifically incorporated into World Bank projects that involve international technology transfer as a major feature.
Originality/value
This paper addresses the appropriateness and effectiveness of technology transfer. The study identifies that, without knowledge transfer, technology transfer does not take place, as knowledge is the key to control technology as a whole. Hence, knowledge transfer is crucial in the process of technology transfer. Furthermore, the study identifies that technology transfer is not obtainable if there is too big a gap in terms of economic development between transferor and transferee. This has important implications for the economists in addressing economic problems both at macro and micro levels and the government policy‐makers in addressing the existing deficiencies in the process of technology transfer and assisting in development of more appropriate arrangements for the transfer of management knowledge.

The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate the impact of weather index insurance on agricultural technology adoption in rural China.
Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate the impact of weather index insurance on agricultural technology adoption in rural China.
Design/methodology/approach
A field experiment was conducted with 344 rural households/farmers in Heilongjiang and Jiangsu Provinces, China. DID model was used to evaluate farmers’ technology adoption with and without index insurance.
Findings
The results show that weather index insurance has a significant effect on the technology adoption of rural households; there is a regional difference in this effect between Heilongjiang and Jiangsu. Weather index insurance promotes technology adoption of rural households in Heilongjiang, while has limited impact on those in Jiangsu. Weather, planting scale and risk preference are also important factors influencing the technology adoption of rural households.
Research limitations/implications
This research is subject to some limitations. First, the experimental parameters are designed according to the actual situation to simulate reality, but the willingness in the experiment does not mean it will be put into action in reality. Second, due to the diversity of China’s climate, geography and economic environment, rural households are heterogeneous in rural China. Whether the conclusion can be generalized beyond the study area is naturally questionable. A study with more diverse samples is needed to gain a fuller understanding of index insurance’s effects on farmers in China.
Originality/value
This research provides a rigorous empirical analysis on the impact of weather index insurance on farmers’ agricultural technology adoption through a carefully designed field experiment.

Abstract
Purpose
The main aim of this paper is to establish a reasonable and scientific evaluation index system to assess the high quality and full employment (HQaFE).
Design/methodology/approach
This paper uses a novel Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) multi-criteria framework to evaluate the quality and quantity of employment, wherein the integrated weights of attributes are determined by the combined the Criteria Importance Through Inter-criteria Correlation (CRITIC) and entropy approaches.
Findings
Firstly, the gap in the Yangtze River Delta in employment quality is narrowing year by year; secondly, employment skills as well as employment supply and demand are the primary indicators that determine the HQaFE; finally, the evaluation scores are clearly hierarchical, in the order of Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui.
Originality/value
A scientific and reasonable evaluation index system is constructed. A novel CRITIC-entropy-TOPSIS evaluation is proposed to make the results more objective. Some policy recommendations that can promote the achievement of HQaFE are proposed.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to describe and analyse the interlibrary loan and document delivery (ILL/DD) in university libraries in Jiangsu Province, China, and to evaluate the service quality of one library as an example of how to improve.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper first describes the ILL/DD of the Jiangsu Academic Library & Information System (JALIS). It then provides an analysis of the problems in JALIS ILL/DD and gives some suggestions for improvement. Finally, it evaluates the service quality of one library’s ILL/DD based on the analytic hierarchy process (AHP).
Findings
It is found that JALIS ILL/DD can be done better via small consortia and discipline centres, and that AHP can be used to evaluate the service quality of a library’s ILL/DD.
Social implications
More patrons can access better service, and the work effectiveness of librarians can be improved.
Originality/value
This paper is helpful to librarians interested in ILL/DD or resource sharing in China.

The objective of this paper is to evaluate the impact of remittance income on rural households in China.
Abstract
Purpose
The objective of this paper is to evaluate the impact of remittance income on rural households in China.
Design/methodology/approach
Using data from a large survey of farming households in three Chinese provinces, the impacts of remittances and other types of income on consumption, production expenditures is evaluated. The econometric models used in this study include logit, tobit and ordinary least squares models.
Findings
It is found that remittances increase nondurable consumption, but not as much as local wages and that there is no difference in the impact on agricultural production spending between remittance and local wages. The large majority of remittances are reported by the households of non‐permanent migrants, suggesting that the fear of losing land allocations has a strong impact on migration decision.
Originality/value
The paper uses a large data set from three distinct provinces of China and is among the first to investigate the different types of remittance and their impacts on both consumption and production activities of Chinese rural households.
