The purpose of the study is to evaluate the impact of China's current coal‐to‐liquids (CTL) activities on its coal and oil markets from 2005 to 2025.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study is to evaluate the impact of China's current coal‐to‐liquids (CTL) activities on its coal and oil markets from 2005 to 2025.

Design/methodology/approach

A partial equilibrium multi‐equation model of China's oil and coal markets is developed based on data obtained from the existing literature. The impact of CTL technologies on China's oil and coal markets is evaluated using computer simulations by solving the model under scenarios with and without CTL production.

Findings

The simulation results show that on average, the planned CTL activities will decrease crude oil prices by 5.73 percent and China's oil imports by 6.09 percent and increase China's domestic oil supply by 9.26 percent over the 20 year period. Also, China's demand for oil will increase by 0.35 percent on average, suggesting that CTL production will slightly stimulate China's demand for oil because of the drop in oil prices. China's demand for coal will also increase by 1.02 percent because of the additional demand for coal created by CTL production. Surprisingly, both coal prices and China's coal supply will decline by 0.51 percent while the demand for coal and coal supply of the rest of the world will be reduced by 1.63 percent and 0.28 percent, respectively.

Originality/value

The paper is the first study on the implication of CTL conversion from an economist's point of view. It applies an economic model to quantify the impacts of such technology on overall energy prices and supplies.

The Amelia Frances Howard‐Gibbon medal of the Canadian Library Association, established in 1971 to honour outstanding illustrators of Canadian children's books, has been awarded this year to William Kurelek for A Prairie Boy's Summer, published in Montreal by Tundra Books. Kurelek was born near Whitford in Alberta but spent most of his early life in a Ukrainian farming community in Manitoba and his illustrations vividly capture life on a prairie farm in the '30s.

Abstract

Purpose

There is a research gap regarding frameworks identifying the specific activities and resources used by companies to build and enhance social ties between them and business actors. The purpose of this paper is to identify those activities and resources and propose a model of them for referring to successive stages of business relationship-building.

Design/methodology/approach

Qualitative research was conducted in the form of 16 semi-structured in-depth individual interviews in four companies operating in Poland, representing the construction, chemical, alcoholic beverages and automotive industries.

Findings

Resources and activities used by companies to build and strengthen interpersonal bonds within business relationships may be categorised according to the dimension of relationship-focused (RF) vs deal-focused (DF) approach. In the companies analysed, the RF approach appeared dominant, while some symptoms of changes towards a DF approach were observed.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed model of resources and activities used in companies at successive stages of business relationship-building extends the understanding of how high-quality relationships are built. The study is exploratory in nature and aims to inspire further in-depth analyses, including cross-cultural comparisons.

Practical implications

The paper helps managers in their day-to-day management of B2B relationships. It provides particular guidelines for business people seeking a potential business partner in Poland and other countries with a communist past.

Originality/value

The paper’s originality results from combining the behavioural approach to B2B relationships with the concept of the RF vs DF approach. The latter concept is based on the experience and observations of its author and, as such, has so far received limited attention in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the prediction and optimization of multiple performance characteristics in the face milling process of tool steel ASSAB XW-42.

Design/methodology/approach

The face milling parameters (cutting speed, feed rate and axial depth of cut) and flow rate (FR) of cryogenic cooling were optimized with consideration of multiple performance characteristics, i.e. surface roughness (SR), cutting force (Fc) and metal removal rate (MRR). FR of cryogenic cooling has two levels, whereas the three face milling parameters each have three levels. Using Taguchi method, an L18 mixed-orthogonal array was selected as the design of experiments. The rough estimation of the optimum face milling parameters was determined by using grey fuzzy analysis. The global optimum face milling parameters were searched by applying the backpropagation neural network-based genetic algorithm (BPNN-GA) method.

Findings

The optimum SR, cutting force (Fc) and MRR could be obtained by setting FR, cutting speed, feed rate and axial depth of cut at 0.5 l/min, 280 m/min, 90 mm/min and 0.2 mm, respectively. The experimental confirmation results showed that BPNN-based GA optimization method could accurately predict and significantly improve all of the multiple performance characteristics.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, there were no publications available regarding multi-response optimization using the combination of grey fuzzy analysis and BPNN-based GA methods during cryogenically face milling process.
