There is no other reference source for biographical information that has the reach of the detail that the National Cyclopedia of American Biography has. Extending back to colonial times, and up to today's community leaders, NCAB presents a detailed picture of almost every famous American that one could think of. Certainly more than one would ever know of.

Abstract
Defines on‐book and off‐book fraud: the former occurs when theft takes place after the recording of money on the victim company’s books, the latter when it occurs after recording, and types of such fraud can involve billing, payroll, expenses, cheque tampering, and register disbursement. Describes methods of investigating off‐book fraud: financial statement analysis, undercover surveillance, invigilation, and admission‐seeking interviews. Gives a case study concerning the Northern Exposure club, where so much skimming occurred that only 10% profits were being made after tax instead of the 30% expected; details how the fraud investigators proceeded by generating fraud theories based on the controls, or lack of, for monitoring cash flows, then collecting and evaluating evidence, estimating the losses incurred, and so on.

This eighth annual survey of American history reference sources includes reviews of seventeen new books, most of which were published in 1984. (The two 1983 imprints were received after the seventh survey went to press.) While the annual survey was never intended to be all‐inclusive, the authors have tried to review as many new, general‐interest titles as possible. As always, the authors have based their evaluations on copies in hand.

THE Leeds Conference of the Library Association was, in many respects, the most important gathering of librarians which has taken place in Britain since librarianship first became organised. The value and interest of the topics discussed, the joint discussion with representatives of famous educational bodies, and other features of a novel kind, all contributed to give the Leeds meeting a character which was very impressive; and its results are likely to be fruitful, if a strong effort is made to follow up the various important matters which were brought forward.

Abstract
Can leadership be taught? Those of us who offer courses on leadership, as part of an academic program, face this question quite often. It is my belief that acquiring more knowledge on leadership does not readily translate into becoming a better leader – especially so at a time in history where leaders have to deal with more complexity and change than ever before (Snowden & Boone, 2007; Malloch & Porter-O’Grady, 2009). Leadership is a process of becoming rather than a process of acquiring. In this paper, I argue the need to ground our teaching practices in complex responsive processes (Stacey, 2003), share one such practice we employ in a graduate program for health care professionals, and discuss the implications.

Abstract
This year's survey focuses mainly on reference works published during 1979 and early 1980. However, to help maintain continuity with previous surveys, some especially noteworthy 1978 imprints are also included. Among a number of impressive new works which appeared in 1979 is The Encyclopedia of Southern History, from Louisiana State University Press. Twelve years in the making, this work fills a long‐felt need for an authoritative sourcebook on southern regional history. ABC‐Clio, publisher of the America: History and Life abstracting service, has made the vast literature on women and on the American and Canadian West more accessible with two new titles in its bibliography series. The two western encyclopedias reviewed provide topical summaries of the many contributions the West has made to American history, including the saga of the western gunfighter. In addition, biographies of American scientists and the explication of recent events in American history are offered by two new reference publications.

Abstract
Purpose
Good stakeholder relations are crucial for the corporate image and reputation of modern organisations. One important management tool for use in successfully establishing good stakeholder relations involves management conversations. Until now these conversations have not been investigated extensively either in general or specifically within the field of corporate communication. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to this developing field of research by presenting the results of a study of management conversations.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper investigates the ways in which various management conversations are used strategically in companies to benefit relations with stakeholders and the image or reputation of the company concerned. The conversations studied are recruitment conversations, job appraisal interviews, round‐table sickness leave conversations and dismissal conversations.
Findings
The paper shows that the companies involved are aware that such conversations should be used as tools for implementing their company strategy and values. However, the strategic potential of these conversations is not fully exploited, and specific crucial aspects like values communication are more prevalent in some conversations than in others.
Originality/value
The paper highlights the need to gain deeper insight into the correlation between various management conversations on the one hand, and management conversations and strategy on the other.

Abstract
Aims to examine the issue of industrial strategy (IS), paying particular attention to the case of Britain. Sets out to assess the possibility and nature of an industrial strategy for Britain, in Europe, and within the global scene, taking into account the world we live in as we see it. Accordingly, the perspective is driven and shaped by a quest for a realistic, feasible and sustainable industrial strategy. In order to achieve these objectives, first examines the theoretical arguments behind much of British, and more generally, Western industrial policies. Following this, outlines and assesses British industrial policy post‐Second World War then compares and contrasts British industrial policy with that of Europe, the USA, Japan and the newly industrialized countries. Then examines recent developments in economics and management which may explain the “Far Eastern” miracle, and points to the possibility of a successful, narrowly self‐interested, IS for Europe and Britain, based on the lessons from (new) theory and international experience. To assess what is possible, develops a theoretical framework linking firms in their roles as consumers and/or electors. This hints at the possibilities and limits of feasible policies. All these ignore desirability which, in the author′s view, should be seen in terms of distributional considerations, themselves contributors to sustainability. Accordingly, discusses a desirable industrial strategy for Britain in Europe which accounts for distributional considerations, and goes on to examine its implications for the issue of North‐South convergence. Concludes by pointing to the limitations of the analysis and to directions for developments.
