Abstract

Purpose

The maintenance department of today, like many other departments, is under sustained pressure to slash costs, show outcome and support the assignment of the organization, as it is a commonsensical prospect from the business perspective. The purpose of this paper is to examine expected maintenance waste reduction benefits in the maintenance of organizations after the implementation of just-in-time (JIT) managerial philosophy. For this, a structured questionnaire was designed and sent to the 421 industries in India.

Design/methodology/approach

The designed questionnaire was divided into two sections A and B to assist data interpretation. The aim of the section A was to build general information of participants, type of organization, number of employees, annual turnover of the organization, etc. Section B was also a structured questionnaire developed based on a five-point Likert scale. The identified critical elements of the JIT were included in the questionnaire to identify the maintenance waste reduction benefits in the maintenance of organizations.

Findings

On the basis of the 133 responses, hypothesis testing was done with the help of Z-test, and it was found out that in maintenance, we can reduce a large inventory of spare parts and also shorten the excessive maintenance activities due to the implementation of JIT philosophy. All the four wastes: waste of processing; waste of rejects/rework/scrap in case of poor maintenance; waste of the transport of spares, and waste of motion, have approximately equal weightage in their reduction. Waste of waiting for spares got the last rank, which showed that there are little bit chances in the reduction of waiting for spares after the implementation of JIT philosophy in maintenance.

Practical implications

The implication of the research findings for maintenance of organizations is that if maintenance practitioners implement elements of JIT philosophy in maintenance then there will be a great reduction in the maintenance wastes.

Originality/value

This paper will be abundantly useful for the maintenance professionals, researchers and others concerned with maintenance to understand the significance of JIT philosophy implementation to get the expected reduction benefits in maintenance wastes of organizations which will be helpful in the great saving of maintenance cost and time side by side great increment in the availability of machines.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose an interpretive structural modeling (ISM) model which highlights the relationships between the identified just-in-time (JIT) elements useful for the implementation of JIT in maintenance and understand mutual influences of these identified JIT elements on JIT implementation in maintenance. Further, this paper seeks to identify dependence power and driving power of identified JIT elements using an ISM and Matrice d’Impacts Croisés Multiplication Appliquée á un Classement (MICMAC) analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology used in the paper is ISM with a view to evolving mutual relationships among JIT elements. The identified JIT elements have been further classified, based on their dependence power and driving power using MICMAC analysis.

Findings

This paper has developed the relationships among 16 identified JIT elements using the ISM methodology. Further, this paper analyses the driving power and dependence power of identified JIT elements with the help of MICMAC analysis. The incorporated approach is developed here, as the ISM provides only binary correlation among identified JIT elements. The MICMAC analysis is adopted here as it is useful in specific examination related to driving and the dependence power of identified JIT elements. The ISM developed model and MICMAC analysis finding are validated with the help of industrial experts.

Research limitations/implications

The weightage and validation for the ISM and MICMAC analysis are obtained throughout the opinion of academics and industry experts. Further hypothesis may be conducted to examine the validity of the planned model, and structural model may also be validated statistically with the help of structural equation modeling.

Practical implications

The ISM model development and MICMAC analysis of identified JIT elements provide academics and maintenance managers a macro picture of the profits gained by the organizations by the implementation of JIT in maintenance of an organization.

Originality/value

The results will be useful for maintenance managers to understand the process of implementation of JIT in maintenance and to gain benefits after the implementation of JIT in maintenance of an organization.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a model (structural equation modeling (SEM)) from the 16 identified just in time (JIT) elements useful for implementation of JIT in maintenance.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected using questionnaires posted to 421 manufacturing industries and automotive service industries in India from which 133 usable responses were obtained. First, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) is carried out to identify the factor structure after that confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) is carried out to verify the factor structure of a set of identified JIT elements. CFA is conceded by an SEM statistical technique. In this paper, EFA is applied to extract the factors in JIT implementation by the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS 24) software and confirming these factors by CFA through analysis of moment structures (AMOS 18) software.

Findings

Out of 18 identified JIT elements through literature and expert opinion only 16 JIT elements are selected for the study, two JIT elements removed due to the low value of correlation item-total correlation (CITC). Three factors extracted through EFA, which affects the benefits of JIT implementation in maintenance in quality improvement, production improvement and process control. SEM using AMOS 18.0 was used to perform the first-order three-factor structure (quality improvement, production improvement and process control) of the JIT implementation in maintenance.

Originality/value

The results will be useful for maintenance managers and maintenance professionals to understand the process of implementation of JIT in maintenance and to gain benefits after the implementation of JIT in maintenance in their respective organization.

Shows that the introduction of preventive maintenance to the production and assembly machines on the line increases line performance under all conditions studied. The effects of maintenance are more pronounced in a longer line.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to compare implementation of short‐run (i.e., small lot‐size) statistical process control (SPC) techniques in just‐in‐time (JIT) manufacturing environments. Using U.S. and Japanese questionnaires, this research focuses on the use of several manufacturing elements such as setup time, stability of process and quality improvement. Barriers to the implementation of short‐run SPC techniques are also examined. Results show significant difference in the way some short‐run SPC techniques are utilized by JIT and non‐JIT manufacturers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationships among just-in-time (JIT), total quality management (TQM) and production operations performance (POP) based on the survey data from Chinese manufacturing firms, provide managerial implications of effectively implementing JIT and TQM for firms in developing countries.

Design/methodology/approach

Questionnaires were collected from 173 Chinese manufacturing firms. Three hypotheses on the relationships among JIT, TQM and POP were first established based on literature review. Empirical study method of structural equation modeling using SPSS and AMOS as data processing tools is employed to test the hypotheses.

Findings

The results show that, on one hand, JIT positively influences TQM and POP; on the other hand, although TQM also has positive relationship with POP, the relationship is not significant at a given significant level. Meanwhile, the author survey also shows that JIT and TQM have complementary relationship, i.e., JIT and TQM can benefit each other in a firm.

Practical implications

TQM is a base of implementing JIT, it is valuable to concurrently implement JIT and TQM in manufacturing firms in order to improve the POP.

Originality/value

It is believed that this research reveals new insights about the JIT and TQM implementation in Chinese manufacturing firms; it has practice value for firms to improve the implementation performance of JIT and TQM.

Abstract

Many articles have appeared which detail the improvements appearing in manufacturing firms subsequent to JIT implementation. Some firms have attributed the complete financial turnaround of their company to the philosophy. However, this assumes that no other variables contributed to the improvements made. Presents the results of a survey of American manufacturing firms which have implemented JIT. In addition to merely presenting the benefits accrued, an effort is made to correlate these benefits with actual improvements in ROI, total costs and service level. Shows JIT as contributing significantly to the financial status of manufacturing firms.

The maintenance department of today, like many other departments, is under sustained pressure to slash costs, show outcome and to support the assignments of the organization, as it is a commonsensical prospect from the business perspective. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to find out the wastes level present in maintenance and, after that, do the ranking of maintenance wastes currently present in the operations of Indian organizations with the help of a questionnaire survey.

Design/methodology/approach

For this, a database of 421 Indian industries was identified and a structured questionnaire was designed. The questionnaire was divided into two sections A and B to assist with data interpretation. The aim of section A was to build general information of participants and their position, type of organization, number of employees, annual turnover of the organization, etc. Section B was also a structured questionnaire developed based on a five-point Likert scale for assessing the level of maintenance wastes currently present in the maintenance.

Findings

Waste of inventory in terms of spare parts storage and obsolesce, etc., waste of rejects/rework/scrap in case of poor maintenance, waste of processing that leads to increases in maintenance and waste of overproduction/excessive maintenance activity has a high level of presence in the maintenance of Indian organizations and gets the top ranks in all the seven types of maintenance wastes.

Practical implications

This paper will be extremely useful for the researchers, maintenance professionals and others concerned with maintenance to understand the after effects of maintenance wastes in Indian industries.

Originality/value

These findings will be highly valuable for professionals relating to manufacturing sector desiring to implement effective maintenance approach in the maintenance management system.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to select the best maintenance policy for different types of equipment of a manufacturer integrating the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) and the technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) models.

Design/methodology/approach

The decision hierarchy of this research includes three levels. The first level aims to choose the best maintenance policy for different types of equipment of an acid manufacturer. These equipment pieces include molten sulfur ponds, boiler, absorption tower, cooling towers, converter, heat exchanger and sulfur fuel furnace. The second level includes decision criteria of added-value, risk level and the cost. Lastly, the third level comprises time-based maintenance (TBM), corrective maintenance (CM), shutdown maintenance and condition-based maintenance (CBM) as four maintenance policies.

Findings

The best maintenance policy for different types of equipment of a manufacturer is the main finding of this research. Based on the obtained results, CBM policy is suggested for absorption tower, boiler, cooling tower and molten sulfur ponds, TBM policy is suggested for converters and heat exchanger and CM policy is suggested for a sulfur fuel furnace.

Originality/value

This research develops a novel model by integrating FAHP and an interval TOPSIS with concurrent consideration of added-value, risk level and cost to select the best maintenance policy. According to the highlights of the previous studies conducted on maintenance policy selection and related tools and techniques, an operative integrated approach to combine risk, added-value and cost with integrated fuzzy models is not developed yet. The majority of the previous studies have considered classic fuzzy approaches such as FAHP, FANP, Fuzzy TOPSIS, etc., which are not completely capable to reflect the decision makers’ viewpoints.

Abstract

Purpose

The control of an inventory where spare parts demand is infrequent has always been difficult to manage because of the randomness of the demand, as well as the existence of a large proportion of zero values in the demand pattern. The purpose of this paper is to propose a just-in-time (JIT) spare parts availability approach by integrating condition monitoring (CM) with spare parts management by means of proportional hazards models (PHM) to eliminate some of the shortcomings of the spare parts demand forecasting methods.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to obtain the event data (lifetime) and CM data (first natural frequency) required to build the PHM for the spares demand forecasting, a series of fatigue tests were conducted on a group of turbomachinery blades that were systematically fatigued on an electrodynamic shaker in the laboratory, through base excitation. The process of data generation in the numerical as well as experimental approaches comprised introducing an initial crack in each of the blades and subjecting the blades to base excitation on the shaker and then propagating the crack. The blade fatigue life was estimated from monitoring the first natural frequency of each blade while the crack was propagating. The numerical investigation was performed using the MSC.MARC/2016 software package.

Findings

After building the PHM using the data obtained during the fatigue tests, a blending of the PHM with economic considerations allowed determining the optimal risk level, which minimizes the cost. The optimal risk point was then used to estimate the JIT spare parts demand and define a component replacement policy. The outcome from the PHM and economical approach allowed proposing development of an integrated forecasting methodology based not only on failure information, but also on condition information.

Research limitations/implications

The research is simplified by not considering all the elements usually forming part of the spare parts management study, such as lead time, stock holding, etc. This is done to focus the attention on component replacement, so that a just-in-time spare parts availability approach can be implemented. Another feature of the work relates to the decision making using PHM. The approach adopted here does not consider the use of the transition probability matrix as addressed by Jardine and Makis (2013). Instead, a simulation method is used to determine the optimal risk point which minimizes the cost.

Originality/value

This paper presents a way to address some existing shortcomings of traditional spare parts demand forecasting methods, by introducing the PHM as a tool to forecast spare parts demand, not considering the previous demand as is the case for most of the traditional spare parts forecasting methods, but the condition of the parts in operation. In this paper, the blade bending first mode natural frequency is used as the covariate in the PHM in a laboratory experiment. The choice of natural frequency as covariate is justified by its relationship with structural stiffness (and hence damage), as well as being a global parameter that could be measured anywhere on the blade without affecting the results.
