Abstract

Community perception of climate change is a factor in increasing local awareness of climate disaster risk. This encourages more disaster risk reduction actions by the communities themselves, and thus, provides a driver for sustainable community disaster risk management (DRM) initiatives. Using these hypotheses, this chapter assesses whether the communities’ climate change perceptions, awareness of climate hazardous risk, and subsequent actions on DRR enable local DRM capacity to reduce the increasing climate disaster risk. The study conducts household surveys with an original questionnaire in four communities in Cartago City, Costa Rica.

Abstract

An anisotropic modelling of hollow porous cylinders under harmonic axial loading is proposed to simulate the in vivo behavior of structural elements of cortical bone called osteons. The peripheral surface of the medium is supposed to be impermeable, except on possible existing cracks. Numerical tests are performed by analytical and finite element methods based on the Biot poroelastic theory. The influence of microcracks on the fluid flow is numerically investigated. The findings show that the existence of peripheral cracks directly modifies the stimulation of the mechano‐sensitive network of the bone. Thus, this study attempts to propose a likely mechanism by which bone can sense changes of the surrounding mechanical environment.

Abstract

A numerical method is developed which can simulate the interaction between a finite compliant panel and an unsteady potential flow. A boundary‐element technique yields the flow solution whilst finite‐differences are used to solve the wall dynamics; these are then coupled to generate a fully interactive wall/flow system. Thus, the evolution of any wall disturbance can be followed. Parallel computing is appropriately employed and a stability investigation of a realistic compliant panel is carried out. Three‐dimensional flexural waves are found below a critical flow speed whilst beyond this threshold, essentially two‐dimensional unstable divergence waves are found. The form of divergence shows good agreement with that seen in experimental studies. The versatility of this new method will permit the investigation of a wide variety of single‐ and multi‐panel configurations subject to different forms of excitation.
