This study aims to investigate how message sidedness affects the impact of fake news posted on social media on consumers' emotional responses.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate how message sidedness affects the impact of fake news posted on social media on consumers' emotional responses.

Design/methodology/approach

The study involves a face-tracking experiment in which 198 participants were exposed to different fake news messages concerning the COVID-19 vaccine. Specifically, participants were exposed to fake news using (1) a one-sided negative fake news message in which the message was entirely unfavorable and (2) a two-sided fake news message in which the negative message was mixed with favorable information. Noldus FaceReader 7, an automatic facial expression recognition system, was used to recognize participants' emotions as they read fake news. The authors sampled 17,450 observations of participants' emotional responses.

Findings

The results provide evidence of the significant influence of message sidedness on consumers' emotional valence and arousal. Specifically, two-sided fake news positively influences emotional valence, while one-sided fake news positively influences emotional arousal.

Originality/value

The current study demonstrates that research on fake news posted on social media may particularly benefit from insights regarding the potential but often overlooked importance of strategic design choices in fake news messages and their impact on consumers' emotional responses.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigated the relationship between principals' abusive leadership and teachers' intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, exploring the potential moderating effects of the duration of the relationship and group size within educational settings.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from a sample of teachers in Bahrain, using self-report measures. The data were analyzed using regression analyses.

Findings

The findings reveal a significant negative relationship between principals' abusive leadership and teachers' intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. The results also show that the duration of the relationship moderates the correlation between abusive leadership and teachers' extrinsic motivation, with teachers who have been in longer relationships with their principals showing greater resistance to the detrimental effects of abusive leadership on their extrinsic motivation. Group size was found to moderate this correlation, with larger groups exhibiting stronger buffering against the negative effect of abusive leadership.

Originality/value

The findings provide valuable insights into the dynamics of abusive leadership in educational settings and the potential moderating factors that can help alleviate its detrimental effects on teachers' motivations.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to help develop “business principles for stakeholder capitalism” in two steps. First, the study defines internal logic of three theories of capitalism and two variants within each theory. Second, it examines approaches to integration into modern democratic capitalism. Treating the three theories as substitutes identifies relative strengths and weaknesses; complementarity and partial overlap approaches to integration study the institutional settings within which stakeholder capitalism operates. Empirical outcomes reflect competition between market and stakeholder businesses for participants, with institutional conditions determining the scope of collective action.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach aligns three typologies in a unique conceptual arrangement defining the three theories of capitalism: forms of capitalism, potential failures of each form and associated types of goods. The first method examines the internal logic of each theory of capitalism. The second draws on traditional narrative review of references documenting each theory of capitalism and variants together with modern Marxist anti-capitalism.

Findings

Three typologies align uniquely with the theories of capitalism, each having two variants. Both variants of stakeholder capitalism are compatible with compassionate capitalism, constitutional government or polycentric governance but not with self-interest capitalism, dictatorship or Marxism. A theory of modern democratic capitalism allocates roles for private, club and social goods with empirically variable mixes occurring across countries. Competition among different types of enterprises provides an empirical test for comparative advantages of stakeholder capitalism. Future research should consider approaches for testing the proposed conceptual scheme in practice concerning capacity to deal with grand challenges, wicked problems and black swan events.

Research limitations/implications

Research approach is limited to logical examination of theories and literature documentation without direct empirical confirmation. The study does not address practical implications for managers and public officials or social implications concerning private incentives, stakeholder cooperation or collective action.

Originality/value

Originality lies in shifting terms of debate about stakeholder capitalism from advocacy of substitute theories to understanding of its relationship to market capitalism and collective action capitalism. Value lies in explaining desirability of theoretical integration of three types of capitalism into a comprehensive framework for modern democratic capitalism.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the impact of China’s mixed-ownership reform on the innovation of non-state-owned acquirers, with a particular focus on the impact on firms with high financing constraints, low-quality accounting information or less tangible assets.

Design/methodology/approach

We use a proprietary dataset of firms listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges to investigate the impact of mixed ownership reform on non-state-owned enterprise (non-SOE) innovation. We employ regression analysis to examine the association between mixed ownership reform and firm innovation.

Findings

The study finds that non-state-owned firms can improve innovation by acquiring equity in state-owned enterprises (SOEs) under the reform. Eased financing constraints, lowered financing costs, better access to tax incentives or government subsidies, lowered agency costs, better accounting information quality and more credit loans are underlying the impact. Additionally, cross-ownership connections amongst non-SOE executives and government intervention strengthen the impact, whilst regional marketisation weakens it.

Originality/value

This study adds to the literature on the association between mixed ownership reform and firm innovation by focussing on the conditions under which this impact is stronger. It also sheds light on the policy implications for SOE reforms in emerging economies.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the development, trends and research gaps related to start-ups during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, this research identified future research directions.

Design/methodology/approach

This research is a bibliometric study using 192 Scopus-indexed articles with the assistance of the VOSviewer. The selected articles discussed start-ups during the COVID-19 pandemic and were published between 2020 and 2022. The analyses included initial statistics on publication trend, distribution of research field, most productive journals, most productive authors, most cited article, geographic distribution, multinational collaboration and science.

Findings

Between 2020 and 2022, the literature on start-ups during the COVID-19 pandemic has increased. Most articles are in Business, Management and Accounting, Economics, Econometrics and Finance and Social Sciences. Regarding geographic distribution and multinational collaboration, the USA, India and the UK led the numbers. The UK was also the forerunner in research collaboration. Based on the science mapping results, COVID-19, fintech, entrepreneurship and innovation were the most simultaneously used keywords. Furthermore, this study also identified that there is a lack of study regarding consumer behavior, employee behavior and quality management of start-ups during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Research limitations/implications

This research also has several limitations. First, this research only used the Scopus database. Even though Scopus has advantages compared to other databases, combining the Scopus database with other databases will be able to provide more comprehensive data. However, there is a risk associated with combining two or more databases, namely, duplication. When using more than one database, researchers must ensure no repetition of the articles used because it will affect the analysis results. Future research can consider combining the Scopus database with other databases. Second, this bibliometric study covered the publication of start-ups during the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing. This condition indicated that several research on start-ups during COVID-19 are still being performed and will be published. Thus, future bibliometric study start-ups during COVID-19 were needed to update the trend of the research on start-ups during COVID-19.

Practical implications

The bibliometric study provided at least two main practical implications that can be used to support the growth of start-ups during the COVID-19 pandemic. First, this research has mapped the existing literature on start-ups during the COVID-19 pandemic. This information can be used as input for start-up practitioners and policymakers when they need scientific reference and evidence in developing a policy and/or a management action/program needed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Second, this research highlighted several clusters of keywords that are attracted many researchers. These keywords can be viewed as important issues that are needed to be monitored by start-up practitioners and policymakers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Social implications

Start-ups have an important role in economic development. It is well known that start-ups can boost productivity and economic growth. As start-ups tend to use technology, it also has an important role in disrupting traditional economic practices. Start-ups may also offer a more convenient life. Furthermore, the availability of start-ups may also increase the quality of life of the people that are serviced by the start-ups.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first bibliometric study that discussed start-ups during the pandemic. It provided a comprehensive literature review process to identify research gaps that allowed future researchers to develop studies related to start-ups.
