Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the static buckling and free vibration of continuously graded ceramic-metal beams by employing a refined higher-order shear deformation, which is also the primary goal of this paper.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed model is able to catch both the microstructural and shear deformation impacts without employing any shear correction factors, due to the realistic distribution of transverse shear stresses. The material properties are supposed to vary across the thickness direction in a graded form and are estimated by a power-law model. The equations of motion and related boundary conditions are extracted using Hamilton’s principle and then resolved by analytical solutions for calculating the critical buckling loads and natural frequencies.

Findings

The obtained results are checked and compared with those of other theories that exist in the literature. At last, a parametric study is provided to exhibit the influence of different parameters such as the power-law index, beam geometrical parameters, modulus ratio and axial load on the dynamic and buckling characteristics of FG beams.

Originality/value

Searching in the literature and to the best of the authors’ knowledge, there are limited works that consider the coupled effect between the vibration and the axial load of FG beams based on new four-variable refined beam theory. In comparison with a beam model, the number of unknown variables resulting is only four in the general cases, as against five in the case of other shear deformation theories. The actual model represents a real distribution of transverse shear effects besides a parabolic arrangement of the transverse shear strains over the thickness of the beam, so it is needless to use of any shear correction factors.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a new improved solution and a new model to predict both shear and normal interfacial stress in simply supported beams strengthened with bonded prestressed FRP laminates by taking into account the fiber volume fraction spacing that play an important role on the interfacial stresses concentration.

Design/methodology/approach

The study has been conducted by using analytical approaches for interfacial stresses in plated beams. The analysis is based on the deformation compatibility approach where both the shear and normal stresses are assumed to be invariant across the adhesive layer thickness. In addition, an unrealistic restriction of the same curvatures in the RC beam and FRP panel commonly used in most of the existing studies is released in the present theoretical formulation.

Findings

To verify the analytical model, the present predictions are compared first with those of (Malek et al., 1998; Smith and Teng, 2001) in the case of the absence of the prestressing force; for the second time, the present method is compared with that developed by (Al-Emrani and Kliger, 2006; Benachour et al., 2008) in the case where only the prestressing force is applied. From the presented results, it can be seen that the present solution agree closely with the other methods in the literature.

Originality/value

The paper puts in evidence a new originality approach theory, taking into account the mechanical load, and the prestressed FRP plate model having variable fiber spacing which considers a strength rigidity and resistance of the damaged structures, which is one aspect that has not been taken into account by the previous studies.

Abstract

Purpose

The halal industry is one of the most growing industries in the world. It refers to the industry in line with Islamic principles and requirements. The emergence of this industry aims to fulfil the requirement of Islamic-compliant products and services. Surprisingly, the industry has been growing in both Muslim and non-Muslim countries. Assessing the performance of the industry will be notable for ensuring that it obtains its objectives. The proper performance measurement should highlight business perspectives and religious aspects. This study aims to explore the current issues and challenges in developing Maqashid Al-Shari’ah-based performance measurement in the halal industry.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a qualitative research using in-depth interviews, and uses content analysis to interpret and explain the interview result. Interviews were conducted with experts in Maqashid Al-Shari’ah and Islamic capital markets.

Findings

The existence of the concept of Maqashid Al-Shari’ah is to create maslahah for all human beings. The development of Maqashid Al-Shari’ah performance measurement for the business is very important. It has only been developed for Islamic financial industry. Unfortunately, it is found that the development of Maqashid Al-Shari’ah performance measurement has not been carried out comprehensively in non-financial industry. The main issue is the absence of the applicable measurements. Therefore, collective decision is required to develop the appropriate measurements.

Practical implications

There is a necessity for regulator to produce standards on Maqashid Al-Shari’ah-based performance measurement. The government policy plays an important role in the development and implementation of Maqashid Al-Shari’ah -based measurement index.

Originality/value

This paper highlights the issue of the development of Maqashid Al-Shari’ah -based performance measurement in halal business and commerce which has not much discussed in prior studies.

Abstract

Purpose

To provide a selective bibliography for researchers and graduate students who have an interest in induction processes applied to the electromagnetic processing of materials.

Design/methodology/approach

The objective is to provide references that identify seminal, early work, and references that represent the current state of the art. References are listed in categories that cover the broad range of induction modeling and application issues.

Findings

A brief overview of the key areas in induction processing of materials is provided, but greater emphasis and space is devoted to the references provided.

Research limitations/implications

The middle years of each topic area are not covered.

Practical implications

A very comprehensive coverage of material is provided to those with an interest in induction processing of materials.

Originality/value

This paper fulfils an identified information/resources need.

Abstract

Purpose

Increasing diversity leads to local, national and transnational challenges requiring a novel and explicit problem-solving approach. Practical wisdom, which emerges from an integration knowledge and ability through religious awareness, can promote peaceful coexistence in diverse societies with adequate theological and educational infrastructures. This paper aims to critically examine practical wisdom as the religious awareness to underlying building harmony in the diverse society.

Design/methodology/approach

Literature from refereed and peer-reviewed journals and articles was reviewed using thematic topic analysis to propose a model of the practical wisdom as a foundation for building harmony in a diverse society.

Findings

This result shows that there are several discussions with specific objectives of practical wisdom as the result of core understanding of religious awareness underlying the potential solutions in the diverse society; the significant essence of practical wisdom as the core element for building harmony; exploring how practical wisdom should be a wide particular element in building integrity and harmony in the diverse society.

Originality/value

Practical wisdom can establish peaceful and respectful relations amongst diverse segments of the population. It is, therefore, crucial for scholars and practitioners to explore practical wisdom in depth and devise ways of promoting this important characteristic at a social level through the exchange of common ideas and goals.

Halal-labeled food shopping behavior: the role of spirituality, image, trust, and satisfaction

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to estimate the influence of spirituality on halal-labeled food shopping behavior both directly and through the mediating roles of image, trust and satisfaction.

Design/methodology/approach

Using quantitative methods, this research analyzed the responses to questionnaires distributed to 212 respondents from Bandung, Indonesia. To prove the hypotheses, the collected data were analyzed by partial least square (SEM-PLS) using SmartPLS.

Findings

This research shows that the direct relationship between spirituality and halal-labeled food shopping behavior was insignificant. However, the relationship between spirituality and halal food shopping behavior became indirectly significant through the mediating roles of image, trust and satisfaction. This finding confirms that image, trust and satisfaction are influential factors in the increased shopping behavior of consumers who choose halal-labeled foods.

Practical implications

To increase the shopping behavior of Muslims for halal-labeled food, halal food companies need to expand the halal label campaign to electronic and social media. Besides, halal food companies need to develop the accountability of food quality to ensure that the halal food products meet the health and safety standards expected by the public. Spiritual education is also required to harmonize the love for God and the food choices approved by God.

Originality/value

This study is the first in testing the influence of spirituality on halal-labeled food shopping behavior both directly and through the mediating roles of image, trust and satisfaction. It successfully revealed the strengths and weaknesses of spirituality in influencing the behavior of halal food shopping.
