Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose an analytical model for the harmonic content no-load magnetic fields and Back electric motive force (EMF) in double-sided TORUS-type non-slotted axial flux permanent magnet (TORUS-NS AFPM) machines with surface-mounted magnets considering the winding distribution and iron saturation effects.

Design/methodology/approach

First, a procedure to calculate the winding distribution with a rectangular cross-section is proposed. The magnetic field distribution and magnetic motive force (MMF) drop due to saturation in iron cores are then exactly extracted in a 2-D analytical model. The consequent influence on air-gap magnetic field and Back EMF are also calculated using a new iterative algorithm. The results are compared with those of the conventional analytical model without saturation, 2-D finite element analysis (FEA) and an experiment on a fabricated prototype machine.

Findings

Unlike the conventional method, the new method yields the no-load magnetic field distributions in air-gap and iron cores and Back EMF very exactly such that the results well match to those of the FEA and experiment.

Originality/value

Unlike the conventional winding factor, the winding distribution is considered here along the both axial and circumferential directions, which improves the accuracy level of results for non-slotted structures with relatively large air-gaps. The magnetic field distribution and MMF drop-in iron parts are also calculated as the basis for exact recalculation of air-gap magnetic field and Back EMF. Because of small computational burden beside superior accuracy, the proposed model can be treated as an accurate and fast substitute for FEA to be used during the design procedure or for predicting the other performance characteristics of TORUS-NS AFPM machines.

Abstract

Purpose

When magnetic saturation in ac machines is evolved, the theory of main flux saturation in d-q axes remains the best. Because of its simplicity, it is the most used in either motoring or generating mode for synchronous or asynchronous machines. Although, it is considered as a global way of introducing the iron saturation, compared to other methods, today, its fidelity has no contest in predicting complex ac machine operations. For this purpose, the aims of this paper consists of modeling these machines whatever the state-space variables values are taking into account the magnetic saturation. Two unified procedures are proposed. The first one deals with a common approach to establishing a complete and detailed model synthesis in d-q axes. The second also presents a unified approach to introducing magnetic saturation of the iron core in the characteristic equations. The analysis takes the salient pole synchronous machine as a general case of study. Then the approaches are extended to undamped and smooth air gap synchronous machines as well as induction machines. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The present paper, which is a first part of a work under study dealing with a unified method to derive multiple models of saturated ac machines, is intended to the description of an alternative method and its application for induction and synchronous machines. It mainly consists of the following parts: first, after writing the stator and rotor space vector d-q equations, the number of possible models is immediately discussed. By considering the currents and fluxes as state-space variables, 14 models are obtained for AC induction machine (IM and SM). They are classified into three families, current (three), flux (three) and mixed models (eight). Second, in order to easily introduce the magnetic saturation in the 14 developed models, a method is presented. It consists of just elaborating the model with the winding currents as state variables, then deriving all the other models from it. Third, to emphasize the influence of the presence of magnetic saturation, in each model, each inductance along the d and q axes is written with a fundamental expression which exists with or without saturation and an additional one due purely to saturation. Hence the additional terms can be studied and quantified in an easy way or simply removed when linear case is assumed. Fourth, adopting such strategy to write the different coefficients of the models had led to the definition of common saturation factors. In turn, the definition of common saturation factors had allowed the definition of different groups of models within each family. Fifth, an alternative to evaluate the static and dynamic saturation coefficients is also proposed. It is shown that by proper fitting of the experimental magnetizing curve, all saturation coefficients can be written only in terms of which is simply the magnitudes ratio of the magnetizing flux and current. Sixth, although the theory of the main flux saturation is now admitted, an investigation was carried out on a self-excited induction generator and the build-up of voltage and current phases of a standalone alternator, to prove the equivalence between the all developed models.

Findings

The number of models based on the state-space variables choice, of a saturated ac machine, is reviewed. A simple method consisting of elaborating just the winding currents model, with magnetic saturation and deriving all the other models from it, is presented. In this study special interest was particularly focussed on either novel models or existing models cited in the literature but cannot be obtained by other approaches. In all cases, if the differential equations of the machine are formulated in terms of a set of variables other than the winding currents, a noticeable reduction in the size of equations may be obtained and consequently less time computing. The approach seems to be able to derive any possible model whatever the state-space variables and the type of the ac machine and hence can be classified as a general approach.

Practical implications

The experiments of synchronous and induction machine transients prove the validity of the method.

Originality/value

By suitable choice of state-space characteristic vectors among the fluxes and the currents, a synthesis of AC machine models in d-q axes is established. To introduce magnetic saturation in each model, an approach-based uniquely on the elaboration of the winding currents model is exposed and applied. In addition, the analysis gives a detailed classification of all found models taking into account the state variables nature as well as the cross-coupling coefficient considered as a saturation factor. The study is completed with a simple alternative to evaluate all saturation factors by just calculating the static magnetizing inductance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present two hysteresis-control algorithms designed for medium-frequency, direct-current, resistance-spot-welding (MFDC RSW) systems. The first proposed control algorithm (MSCHC) eliminates the short switching cycles that can occur when using the existing hysteresis-control algorithms. This control minimises the number of switching cycles that are needed to generate the selected welding current. The welding-current ripple can be high when using this control algorithm. Therefore, a second algorithm (HCRR) is presented that reduces the welding-current ripple by half.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed hysteresis controllers consist of the transformer’s magnetic-flux-density hysteresis regulator and a welding-current hysteresis regulator. Therefore, the welding current must be measured and the saturation of the iron core must be detected. The proposed hysteresis controller supplies the inverter with the signals needed to generate the supply voltage for the RSW transformer, which then generates the selected welding current.

Findings

The proposed MSCHC algorithm produces the smallest possible number of switching cycles needed to generate the selected welding current. The high welding-current ripple can be reduced if the number of switching cycles is increased. The observed number of switching cycles and the welding-current ripple change if the welding resistance and/or inductance change.

Originality/value

The number of switching cycles can be minimised when using the first proposed control algorithm (MSCHC), and so the switching power losses can be minimised. If the welding-current ripple produced by the first control algorithm is unacceptable, the second control algorithm (HCRR) can reduce it by increasing the number of switching cycles.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a novel mathematical model of bearingless switched reluctance motor (BSRM). This model differs from conventional mathematical models in the calculation of torque and suspension forces. Conventional mathematical models neglect the coupling relationship between the α- and β-axes or ignore the magnetic saturation of the Si-Fe material. This study considers these issues simultaneously. Additionally, considering the air-gap edge effect, the fringing coefficient is used to establish a high-precision mathematical model.

Design/methodology/approach

An innovative mathematical model of BSRM based on the Maxwell stress method was established by selecting an appropriate integration path. The fringing coefficient of the air-gap was computed based on the finite element analysis results at the aligned position of the stator and rotor poles. Using the least squares fitting method, the piecewise fitted magnetization curve of the Si-Fe material was utilized to calculate flux density.

Findings

The appropriate integration path of the Maxwell stress method was selected, which considered the coupling relationship of the suspension forces in the α- and β-axes and was closer to the actual situation. The fringing coefficient of the air-gap improved the calculation accuracy of air-gap flux density. The magnetomotive force was consumed by the magnetic resistance of the stator and rotor poles considering the magnetic saturation.

Originality/value

A novel mathematical model of BSRM is proposed. Different from conventional mathematical models, the proposed model can effectively solve the coupling relationship of the suspension forces in the α- and β-axes. Additionally, this model is consistent with the actual situation of motor as it includes a reasonable calculation of the air-gap flux density, considering the air-gap edge effect and magnetic saturation.

Abstract

Purpose

Iron deficiency anaemia is widely prevalent amongst women and children in India. The aim of the paper is to study the effect of supplementation of micronutrient fortified biscuits on haemoglobin and serum iron levels of adolescent girls (n = 46, 10‐16 years) studying in a government school in Jaipur city, India.

Design/methodology/approach

The study was designed to be an intervention study. The intervention was with biscuits fortified with 30 mg iron, 100  μg folic acid, 600  μg vitamin A, 40 mg vitamin C and 150  μg iodine. The iron status of adolescent girls was determined through haemoglobin and serum iron levels.

Findings

The results revealed that 95.7 per cent of the adolescent girls suffered from anaemia of which 28.3 per cent had “mild” deficiency and 67.4 per cent had “moderate” deficiency. Anaemia was more prevalent in the older age groups. On supplementation, there was a significant increase in the haemoglobin levels. There was a three‐fold increase in the percentage of adolescent girls in the “normal” category of anaemia from 4.3 to 13.0 per cent and more than two‐fold decrease in the “moderate” category of anaemia from 67.4 to 28.3 per cent. Moreover, 21.7 per cent of the subjects had “normal” levels while the rest (78.3 per cent) had low levels of serum iron; the percentage of adolescent girls in the normal category increased to 93.5 per cent after intervention on the basis of serum iron levels.

Research limitations/implications

Supplementation with iron and folic acid with other micronutrients improved the haemoglobin and serum iron levels of the adolescent girls significantly.

Originality/value

The paper recommends that the school system can be used for micronutrient supplementation to improve the nutritional status of children and adolescents as the students are more regimented here for distribution of nutrient fortified food products.

The purpose of the paper is to present a complete design example of an interior permanent magnet integrated starter‐alternator (ISA).

Design/methodology/approach

After a preliminary design on the basis of an analytical model, finite element simulations are adopted to refine the design of the machine.

Findings

The designed ISA drive is able to satisfy all the requirements of modern cars, where the power of the electrical generators is increasing to deliver the on‐board power demand. The drive exhibits high torque, driving start, and a wide constant power speed range driving generation.

Originality/value

The entire system design is considered in the paper, both the electrical machine and the control strategy.

Abstract

Purpose

The majority of three‐phase dynamic transformer models used in commercially available electric power system transient simulation programs offer only saturated three‐phase transformer models built from three single‐phase transformer models. This paper sets out to deal with the modelling and transient analysis of a saturated three‐limb core‐type transformer.

Design/methodology/approach

Three iron core models I‐III are given by the current‐dependent characteristics of flux linkages. In the first model, these characteristics are given by a set of piecewise linear functions, which include saturation. In the second model, the piecewise linear functions are replaced by the measured nonlinear characteristic. The more complex third model is given by a set of measured flux linkage characteristics.

Findings

The behaviour of transformers used in electric power applications depends considerably on the properties of magnetically nonlinear iron core. The best agreement between the calculated and measured results is obtained by use of the most complex iron core model III, which takes into account magnetic cross‐couplings between different limbs, caused by saturation.

Research limitations/implications

Measurement of the current‐dependent flux linkage characteristics of the 0.4 kV, 3.5 kVA laboratory transformer requires corresponding excitation of windings by three independent linear amplifiers. Current‐dependent flux linkage characteristics of the larger power transformer can be determined either by similar measurement with linear amplifiers of an appropriate power or by extracting them from the calculated magnetic field, which is done by the finite element method.

Practical implications

A three‐phase dynamic transformer model with the obtained iron core model III is suitable for the numerical analysis of nonsymmetric transient states in power systems.

Originality/value

This paper presents a three‐phase dynamic transformer model with an original iron core model III, which accounts for magnetic cross‐couplings between different limbs, caused by saturation.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents a comparative study of different stator-segmentation topologies of a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) used in traction drives and their effect on iron losses. Using stator segmentation allows one to achieve more significant copper fill factors, resulting in increased power densities and efficiencies. The segmentation of the stators creates additional air gaps and changes the soft magnetic material’s material properties due to the cut edge effect. The aim of this paper is to present an in-depth analysis of the influence of stator segmentation on iron losses. The main goal was to compare various segmentation methods under equal excitation conditions in terms of their influence on iron loss.

Design/methodology/approach

A transient finite element method analysis combined with an extended iron-loss model was used to evaluate discussed effects on the stator’s iron losses. The workflow to obtain a homogenized airgap length accounting for cut edge effects was established.

Findings

The paper concludes that the segmentation in most cases slightly decreases the iron losses in the stator because of the overall reduced magnetic flux density B due to the additional air gaps in the magnetic circuit. An increase of the individual components, as well as total power loss, was observed in the Pole Chain segmentation design. In general, segmentation did not change the total iron losses significantly. However, different segmentation methods resulted in the different distortion of the magnetic field and, consequently, in different iron loss compositions. The analysed segmentation methods exhibited different iron loss behaviour with respect to the operation points of the machine. The final finding is that analysed stator segmentations had a negligible influence on the total iron loss. Therefore, applying segmentation is an adequate measure to improve PMSMs as it enables, e.g. increase of the winding fill factor or simplifying the assembly processes, etc.

Originality/value

The influence of stator segmentation on iron losses was analysed. An in-depth evaluation was performed to determine how the discussed changes influence the individual iron loss components. A workflow was developed to achieve a computationally cheap homogenized model.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a homogenization method considering magnetic anisotropy for a magnetic field analysis of a turbine generator. To verify the validity of the proposed method, the effects of magnetic anisotropy and a space factor on a no-load saturation curve and no-load iron loss of the turbine generator are discussed.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed method was derived from the combination of the homogenization of microscopic fields in a laminated iron core with the modelling of two-dimensional magnetic properties based on free energy. To verify the validity, the proposed method was applied to a finite-element analysis of a simple ring core model. Finally, a no-load saturation curve and iron loss of the turbine generator was investigated by using the proposed method.

Findings

The computational accuracy of the homogenization method considering magnetic anisotropy is almost the same as that of the detailed modelling of the laminated structure in the magnetic field analysis of the laminated iron core. Furthermore, it is clarified that magnetic anisotropy does not have a large influence on the no-load saturation curve of the turbine generator because of the large air gap. On the other hand, the space factor affects the shape of the no-load saturation curve.

Originality/value

This paper verifies the validity of the homogenization method considering magnetic anisotropy method and elucidates the effects of magnetic anisotropy and a space factor on no-load characteristics of the turbine generator.
