Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to produce cobalt (Co)-based thin films by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique and then to evaluate structural and mechanical integrity.

Design/methodology/approach

Co-based thin films were produced by metalorganic CVD technique. Boronizing, carburization and nitridation of the produced Co thin films were accomplished through a post-treatment stage of thermal diffusion into as-deposited Co thin films, in order to produce cobalt boride (Co2B), cobalt carbide and cobalt nitride thin films in the surface layer of Co. The surface topography and the crystal structure of the produced thin films were evaluated through scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The mechanical integrity of the produced thin films was evaluated through nanoindentation technique.

Findings

The obtained results indicate that Co2B thin film exhibits the highest nanomechanical properties (i.e. H and E), while Co thin film has enhanced plasticity. The cobalt oxide thin film exhibits higher resistance to wear in comparison to the cobalt thin film, a fact that is confirmed by the nanoscratch analysis showing lower coefficient of friction for the oxide.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims at exploring the factors that are important for the digital development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis compared to large-sized enterprises.

Design/methodology/approach

Using data from a survey in Greek firms during the pandemic, econometric models are estimated to identify factors that are related to the expansion of digital marketing and e-commerce practices of SMEs and large-sized enterprises based on the technology–organization–environment framework.

Findings

The results suggest that while further investments in information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure are important for the digital development of SMEs during the COVID-19 crisis, it is the innovative activities that advance the digitalization of large-sized enterprises. Also, SMEs, which implement flexible human resource (HR) practices (such as remote work) and face delays in the supply chain due to the pandemic, appear to have increased probability of expanding their digital marketing and e-commerce. On the contrary, HR practices do not seem to matter for large firms, while new regulations appear to discourage their digital development during the COVID-19 crisis.

Originality/value

This is the first study which empirically explores the digital reactions of SMEs compared to those of large-sized enterprises in a pandemic crisis context. It advances the limited knowledge on the potentially different responses of SMEs and large-sized enterprises to major external shocks with respect to their digital marketing and e-commerce expansion.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore and present a higher education initiative towards the training and development of Eastern European citizens, who migrate to Greece, in pursuit of bettering their economic conditions and, simultaneously, become evolving social entities, adaptable to heterogeneous environments.

Design/methodology/approach

Motivated by the motto “education for all”, the initiative is based on data drawn from local and public authorities and interviews that were carried out with immigrants, mainly from Albania and Ukraine.

Findings

This paper proposes a learning policy and training mechanism for foreigners and the establishment of a Mediator Office providing educational services.

Research limitations/implications

Further efforts are necessary to improve the teaching content in order to be in full conformity with the characteristics and requirements of non-native learners.

Practical implications

Some of the constraints hampering the implementation of this initiative are the lack of the necessary financial resources, the absence of legal framework, as well as the shortage of bilingual adult training and education instructors.

Originality/value

There have been limited autonomous educational programmes concerning immigrants ' lifelong learning provided by the Greek Ministry of Education, focused mainly on the Greek language and history learning. This work introduces a novel educational structure, which may be established in any higher education institution and which will involve anyone in any kind of subject, anytime and anywhere.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to investigate the possible options for matching country destination image with different types of tourism to explain general attributes towards specific forms of tourism, based on previous research on country of origin effects.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative research design is used for the purpose of the study.

Findings

Data analysis demonstrates that the perception of the destination image in a country context varies across various types of tourism in most of the cases investigated. Moreover, the research outcomes portray a close relationship between the match of country image – tourism type and the willingness to visit a destination.

Practical implications

The study assists tourism practitioners and policy makers in gaining a better understanding of whether tourists conceive all forms of tourism in a specific country favourably, simply because they link favourable dimensions to that particular country, or whether they perceive only certain types of tourism favourably.

Originality/value

This study is among the first to empirically demonstrate the effect of match/mismatch of country destination image with the type of tourism on the willingness to visit, based on specific primary travel motives.

Abstract

Purpose

Sustainability focuses on the effect of present actions on societies, environments and ecosystems of the future. The purpose of this paper is to discover to what extent the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region corporations carry out various aspects of corporate sustainability. This paper studies corporate sustainability practices and examines the association between corporate sustainability practices and performance in the MENA region.

Design/methodology/approach

A thorough literature review was conducted. The findings indicate six key categories/constructs that can be used as indicators for measuring corporate sustainability and performance. Based on the literature review, a theoretical framework was constructed and tested. Data for this quantitative and explanatory study were obtained through a self-administered survey which was distributed to senior managers at corporations in the MENA region.

Findings

The findings of this study show that the corporations operating in the MENA region are underachieving in all aspects of sustainability except for the energy management facet. Larger-sized companies tend to be more involved in corporate sustainability practices in the categories of internal and external education, external health and resources and energy management. This study finds the existence of a strong positive relationship between each sustainability category and each performance category.

Originality/value

Most studies on sustainability focus on North America, Europe and East Asia, not the MENA region. The findings will help corporations in the MENA region become aware of the importance of increasing their engagement in the sustainability aspects that they lack, as this will lead to a boost of their overall performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to search for the factors that influence the profitability of Greek commercial and cooperative banks by examining other variables that have never been used before. It also seeks to examine bank performance before and during the economic crisis in Greece. The survey is based on previous similar research.

Design/methodology/approach

A multiple regression analysis has been used for the determination of the factors which influence the profitability of the Greek banking sector as well as the multicriteria method PROMETHEE for the examination of the Greek banking sector performance before (2007) and during the economic recession (2008‐2009).

Findings

The paper finds that: type of bank plays an important role in profitability; the indicator ROA is associated only with well‐capitalized banks with sufficient liquidity and cost efficiency; and cooperative banks in general at the beginning of the crisis were less influenced by the economic crisis than commercial banks.

Originality/value

This is the first time that the entire Greek banking system has been examined for the particular period regarding the factors that influence bank profitability. Up to now there has been no published research examining whether the type of the bank influences profitability or which of banks remained efficient and “durable” before and during the first two years of the economic crisis in Greece.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the issue of performance management in the public sector and specifically the implementation of the balanced scorecard (BSC) methodology on a public (municipal) non-profit sport organization in Greece. The research provides a discussion on the BSC development process, the goals set on each pillar and the outcome that the organization achieved, in order to be used as a roadmap for other managers in the public sector.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used information extracted from the municipal board of Papagos-Holargos city in Greece, including board reports, documents and decision transcripts and open-ended interviews related to the implementation of BSC method, as well as to the impact of this decision on the quality of services, citizens’ satisfaction and the improvement of internal processes.

Findings

The results indicated that the citizens of Papagos-Holargos perceived sport services to be of enhanced quality related to/when compared to the previous years (based on a questionnaire submitted by the citizens of Papagos-Holargos at the end of the each sample per year). In addition, the staff improved its skills and abilities by participating in training seminars and, in general, the implementation of the BSC method on the municipal sport organization of Papagos-Holargos city sets the basis for an effective performance management which can enhance its future sustainability.

Practical implications

Managers of municipal and public sport organizations could use the findings of the study as a roadmap for discussing, evaluating and possibly implementing the BSC approach in their organizations’ daily operations.

Originality/value

This study fills a significant gap in the existing literature on the implementation of a traditional business performance management tool on a non-profit public sport organization.
