Abstract

Purpose

This particular study examined the government bond price variations in order to determine the presence of excess volatility both at country and panel group level of BRICS countries context.

Design/methodology/approach

The study applied the autoregressive GARCH panel model approach proposed by Fakhry and Richter (2015) to evaluate the presence of excess volatility and then examined the diversification benefits. Further, the use of discrete wavelet transformation (DWT) has added the advantage to observe volatility across bonds along with potential diversification benefits by retaining information from the time and frequency domain perspective for both the maturities.

Findings

The main finding indicates that the excess volatility is present in BRICS countries at individual level i.e. in the case of Russia, India and China. However, the 10-year bond showing a less volatility compared to 5-year bond with the possibility of reaping out the benefits of diversification with international portfolio of sovereign bonds.

Practical implications

The main implication of the research is related to the non-perseverance of EMH as far sovereign bonds of BRICS countries are concerned as the results indicate presence of excess volatility in the 5-year and 10-year bond markets. However, the implicit behavior of 5-year bond could benefit the active fund managers and investors by taking an advantage of a reducing systemic risk through short-medium term investments.

Originality/value

This study contributes not only to the existing studies of similar nature by examining the excess volatility in bond markets but also taking account of co-moment of distinct maturities to confirm possible international diversification benefits for BRICS countries context.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this paper is to examine the profound repercussions of workplace bullying (WB), emotional exhaustion (EE), and psychological distress (PD) on poor job performance (PJP) within the intricacies of Thailand’s healthcare sector. It also seeks to elucidate the moderating influence of COVID-19 burnout (CBO) on these variables.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper utilized a quantitative research approach. A total of 230 responses were collected from healthcare workers using convenience sampling during a significant surge of the coronavirus in March 2022. To assess the reliability and correlations between constructs, a dual-stage structural equation modeling (SEM) technique was applied.

Findings

During the global health crisis caused by COVID-19, WB and PD were found to positively predict PJP, except for EE. The presence of WB elevated EE and PD among Thai hospital staff. PD and EE partially mediated the relationship between WB and PJP. The positive moderating role of CBO among hospital employees significantly buffered the relationship between WB and EE.

Originality/value

The originality of this study lies in the examination of the poor mental health of Thai healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Healthcare reforms are required to protect the mental health of Thai healthcare staff to prevent poor job performance following unprecedented circumstances.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective is to develop a more effective model that simplifies and accelerates the news classification process using advanced text mining and deep learning (DL) techniques. A distributed framework utilizing Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) was developed to classify news headlines. This approach leverages various text mining and DL techniques on a distributed infrastructure, aiming to offer an alternative to traditional news classification methods.

Design/methodology/approach

This study focuses on the classification of distinct types of news by analyzing tweets from various news channels. It addresses the limitations of using benchmark datasets for news classification, which often result in models that are impractical for real-world applications.

Findings

The framework’s effectiveness was evaluated on a newly proposed dataset and two additional benchmark datasets from the Kaggle repository, assessing the performance of each text mining and classification method across these datasets. The results of this study demonstrate that the proposed strategy significantly outperforms other approaches in terms of accuracy and execution time. This indicates that the distributed framework, coupled with the use of BERT for text analysis, provides a robust solution for analyzing large volumes of data efficiently. The findings also highlight the value of the newly released corpus for further research in news classification and emotion classification, suggesting its potential to facilitate advancements in these areas.

Originality/value

This research introduces an innovative distributed framework for news classification that addresses the shortcomings of models trained on benchmark datasets. By utilizing cutting-edge techniques and a novel dataset, the study offers significant improvements in accuracy and processing speed. The release of the corpus represents a valuable contribution to the field, enabling further exploration into news and emotion classification. This work sets a new standard for the analysis of news data, offering practical implications for the development of more effective and efficient news classification systems.

Consumers by and large today look for economic growth and benefits without compromising on socio-environmental well-being. Having said that, it is imperative to note that consumers' consciousness may not essentially lead to sustainable purchases. This chapter aims to examine the role of both sustainable purchase intention and post-purchase dissonance in the relationship between consumers' sustainability consciousness and consumers' evangelism. With the increased role of social media pervading our lives, trusted sources' recommendations play a significant role in co-creating products. Thus, research on consumers' evangelism (especially sustainability-conscious consumers) would help marketers develop successful strategies. This study expands to the extant literature on sustainability-conscious consumers vis-a-vis consumer evangelism. We collected responses from 227 respondents to examine hypotheses, by means of structural equation modelling (SEM). The study indicates sustainable purchase intention does mediate the relationship between sustainability-conscious consumers and consumer evangelism. On the other hand, we also note that post-purchase dissonance is not a significant moderating construct between sustainability-conscious consumers and consumer evangelism.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a valid insight into consumers' minds while considering word of mouth (WOM), brand image and uniqueness as independent variables while considering the tourism industry as the primary stakeholder.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopts qualitative research methods and data collected from 1,033 respondents using convenience sampling methodology. The data are collected from different tourists spots in China and Pakistan. The PROCESS macro was utilized in this study using SPSS version 25.0 to inspect the impacts by using Model 4 and the conditional effects indirectly by utilizing Model 14.

Findings

Customer's intimacy, search for novel and unexplored destinations highlight WOM interactions and perceived service value. Service value, interactional justice and professional attitude of hotel management mediated all the given relationships significantly. The brand image does not mediate any significant associations. Perceived service value and brand image predict customer's loyalty, and WOM is the direct measure of their intentions, and these variables are market trend indicators. A tourist's response toward different destinations is described in this study with comparative analysis of Chinese and Pakistani tourists. The study results showed a significantly positive relationship between hotel management professional behavior, customer's loyalty, customer's intimacy and WOM.

Research limitations/implications

The recruited population might not be represented as the broader and larger visitor population, resulting in restricting establishing tactics. Moreover, this study's results provide significant insight into a tourism industry, hence providing a chance to manage customer loyalty better.

Social, managerial and theoretical implications

This study contributes significantly to the body of knowledge and provides remarkable insight from the managerial perspective. Interactional justice results in significant value for hotel management directors and top management, front desk staff and operatives and front level employees and managers. Consumer sensitivity of fairness in interpersonal dealings calls for behavioral changes in frontline employees, especially those directly dealing with hotel visitors. Hotel staff and management should formulate a system to deal with the demands and needs of visitors. It should describe the rights and obligations of visitors and ensure that each customer is treated equally and with respect. Customers should be motivated to read the survey questionnaires kept in their rooms and offer their views on the services provided. This strategy might increase the customers' sense of empowerment and leading to notions of fairness in individual encounters.

Originality/value

This study provides an insight into the customer's minds while considering essential variables that include WOM, brand image, perceived service value and uniqueness.

This study aims to examine the influence of managerial myopia on the excessive financialization behavior of listed firms on Bursa Malaysia.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the influence of managerial myopia on the excessive financialization behavior of listed firms on Bursa Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

Through a sample of 313 firms from 2015 to 2021, the author examine whether managerial myopia promotes or inhibits corporate financialization. The author uses ordinary least squares and Logit as the baseline models and addresses potential endogeneity through the dynamic-panel generalized method of moments. The results are also robust to alternative measures of financialization and managerial myopia.

Findings

The results show a significant positive effect of managerial myopia on the excessive financialization of enterprises. Furthermore, the findings indicate that the impact of managerial myopia on the over-financialization of enterprises is more prominent in periods of low economic policy uncertainty. However, the relationship between excessive financialization and managerial myopia is weakened in the presence of female chief executive officers.

Practical implications

The empirical results have useful policy implications. First, firms should establish scientific managerial assessment and supervision systems to avoid excessive financial investment behavior by myopic managers caused by assessments that place too much emphasis on short-term performance. Second, regulators and policymakers should encourage firms to appoint women to top management positions, which may inhibit short-sighted financialization behavior. Finally, the regulatory authorities should undertake the necessary measures driving companies to disclose the investment direction of the funds so that shareholders and investors can understand the use direction of the funds in a timely manner, which can effectively prevent the economy “from the real to the virtual” and promote the development of the real economy.

Originality/value

This paper expands the existing research on corporate financialization behavior and provides a new theoretical basis for the underlying factors of excessive financialization. It studies the influence of corporate financialization from the perspective of short-run managerial actions and deepens the understanding of managerial myopia and companies’ financialization levels.
