Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide the guidance on a design and integrity evaluation of a cylinder under pressure, for which stress analysis has been done for transversely isotropic thick-walled circular cylinder under internal and external pressure with thermal effects.

Design/methodology/approach

Transition theory has been used to evaluate plastic stresses based on the concept of generalized principal Lebesgue strain measure which simplifies the constitutive equations and helps to achieve better agreement between the theoretical and experimental results.

Findings

It can be concluded that circular cylinder with thermal effects under internal and external pressure made of isotropic material (steel) is on the safer side of the design as compared to the cylinder made of transversely isotropic material (i.e. magnesium and beryl) because percentage increase in effective pressure required for initial yielding to become fully plastic is high for isotropic material (steel) as compared to transversely isotropic material (i.e. magnesium and beryl). It can also be concluded that out of two transversely isotropic materials, beryl is better choice for design of cylinder as compared to magnesium material because percentage increase in effective pressure required for initial yielding to become fully plastic is high for beryl as compared to magnesium.

Originality/value

A detailed investigation of thermal transversely isotropic thick-walled circular cylinder under internal and external pressure has been done which leads to the idea of “stress saving” that minimizes the possibility of fracture of cylinder.

Abstract

Purpose

Over the past few years, several scholars have focused on green innovation in the agri-food industry. In line with this research stream, the purpose of this paper is to cover some unexplored areas regarding if stakeholder pressures have a positive influence on family engagement to implement green innovation practices and socially responsible practices.

Design/methodology/approach

By adopting a qualitative research methodology, mainly based on a multiple case study, this paper seeks to cover some unexplored areas regarding the understanding the relationship between stakeholders, family involvement and business practices in green innovation. The authors analyze eight cases from five Latin American countries selected, all are family firms focused on agricultural production.

Findings

Latin American family firms from agri-food industry, have a positive influence from internal/external stakeholder to implement green innovation initiatives and socially responsible practices, that result in short/long term business practices.

Originality/value

The originality of the proposed conceptual model stems from the need to overcome the previous theoretical models based on the stakeholder theory, which deals separately with internal/external influence over the firm.

Abstract

Purpose

The catastrophic failures of these thick-wall cylinders are mainly due to the presence of inherent cracks in the material. The present study aims to deal with the analysis of stress for a given range of inside pressure. The paper deals with the calculation of radial and tangential stresses for various external pressure-to-internal pressure ratios and external radius to internal radius of the thick-walled cylinder.

Design/methodology/approach

The inlet line to the combustion chamber normally has an internal diameter of 150 mm and has a thickness of 25 mm. Normal temperature of the working fluid is about 80°C and the outside temperature is kept as room temperature. The present work deals with the stress analysis of the inlet line with and without internal crack. Also the stress intensity factors are calculated to check with the fracture toughness. Analysis is done both theoretically and by FEM by using the well-known software ANSYS.

Findings

Results show that the radial stress is independent of the external radius-to-internal radius ratio, while the tangential stress increases.

Practical implications

In process industries like nuclear or chemical, etc., structures in the form of thick-walled cylinders play a vital role, as its failure can affect humans and the environment. Because of this, the design and analysis of the above cylinders are of much significance.

Originality/value

Due to constant or cyclic operating pressure of pressure vessels and its corresponding pipelines usually in the form of thick-walled cylinders, reliability of the materials and structures used is of critical importance, as its failure can be deadly and possess lethal dangers when the cylinder contains flammable, toxic or reactive working fluid. The major ruling factors for the failure are none other than stress-related defects and presence of cracks.

Abstract

Examines the hypotheses that high instrumentality, adaptive coping, and low work/family pressure are predictive components of women’s managerial advancement. A profile analysis demonstrated that the managerial profile was characterized by high instrumentality and low relationality accompanied by high adaptive work coping. On the other hand, the non‐managerial profile was characterized by low instrumentality and high relationality accompanied by low adaptive work coping and high maladaptive work coping. A LISREL path analysis was tentatively used to test the causal influence of internal (instrumental and relational) traits, work/family pressure, and coping on women’s managerial advancement. The results showed that the strongest predictor of managerial emergence was the instrumental factor, while work/family pressure and coping style had no impact.

Abstract

Purpose

To introduce and provide an overview of the various issues related to environmental (green) supply chain management performance measurement.

Design/methodology/approach

The work relies on experiences, case studies and other literature related to performance measurement in environmental supply chains. It seeks to integrate works in supply chain management, environmental management, and performance management into one framework. A systems framework forms the discussion outline with a focus on controls/pressures, inputs, tools, and outputs as major categories for evaluation and review.

Findings

Provides an integrative framework for study, design and evaluation of green supply chain management performance tools. The findings also identify a number of issues that need to still be addressed.

Research limitations/implications

We have only one design of the issues in which numerous categorizations could be provided. There is limited research in this area and new and current models/developments can provide additional insight. Implications of the work is that these gaps exist and that significantly more work needs to be completed in this field.

Practical implications

A very useful source of information for practitioners that seek to implement these systems within and between organizations. Also, the paper provides numerous areas which researchers could complete additional research and develop research agendas.

Originality/value

This paper provides some of the very first insights into development of a green supply chain management performance measurement system. Typically performance measurement systems are internally and business focused, we expand on these issues by considering inter‐organizational and environmental issues within a business context.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite the availability of methods and techniques designed to assist with predictive and retrospective evaluation of ICT initiatives, management continues to struggle to perform meaningful evaluations, and the measurement of ICT investment payoff remains a challenge. A recurring problem associated with failed ICT‐based investment is poor change management. This paper aims to focus on the value of understanding the change management aspects of ICT investments.

Design/methodology/approach

A framework was developed from a study of the change management literature. An empirical investigation involving a qualitative case study approach was then conducted in order to assess the efficacy of the framework during the evaluation process.

Findings

Business benefit from ICT is likely only when ICT investment is accompanied by appropriate change management skills. The study highlights the particular importance of communication, championing and change agency, resources, and the project timescale.

Research limitations/implications

Results were generated from a single case study. It is also acknowledged that it is unclear what impact (if any) a parallel project had on the project under investigation.

Practical implications

The paper highlights the value of effective change management, placing particular emphasis on effective communication during all stages of a project.

Originality/value

The paper explicitly employs change management techniques in order to identify potential problem areas. It recommends longitudinal research be conducted in order to employ the framework during both ex ante and ex post evaluation for a single initiative.

Abstract

Purpose

The proposed use of unlatched, reverse swing flappy doors is becoming widespread in the design of residential common corridor smoke control systems. This article explores the conceptual arguments for and against the use of these systems.

Design/methodology/approach

This article relies on industry experience, with reference to relevant building design practices, standards and research literature, to categorise arguments. These are collated into four common areas of concern relating to compartmentation, reliability, depressurisation and modelling practices. A final comparison is made between different common corridor smoke control system types for these four areas.

Findings

The article highlights several concerns around the use of flappy door systems, including the enforced breaches in stair compartmentation, uncertainties around system reliability, the reliance on door closers as a single point of failure, the impact of day-to-day building use on the system performance and the false confidence that modelling assessments can provide in demonstrating adequacy. The article concludes in suggesting that alternative smoke control options be considered in place of flappy door systems.

Originality/value

Discussion on the use of flappy door smoke control systems has been ongoing within the fire engineering community for several years, but there is limited public literature available on the topic. By collating the common arguments relating to these systems into a single article, a better understanding of their benefits and pitfalls has been provided for consideration by building design and construction professionals.

Abstract

Purpose

Integrity assessment is used to ensure reliability operation of a pressurized equipment containing defects. Based on data of cylindrical shell dimensions, operation conditions, material properties and crack dimensions, an assessment can be carried out, using either Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3 procedure. Assessment using Level 3 procedure within the code requires a finite element simulation in order to generate both the evaluation point and the failure assessment diagram (FAD) that serves as the acceptance criteria. The purpose of this paper is to provide the numerical data which are used for integrity assessment of a pressure vessel containing crack. Here, a parametric study has been carried out to generate such result for the cases of longitudinal crack defect in a cylindrical shell for a number of common cases, in terms of thickness-to-radius ratio, crack size ratio and crack aspect ratio.

Design/methodology/approach

The evaluation of stress intensity factor is determined through J-integral parameter found using a finite element analysis with a specially meshed strategy incorporating the crack. A comparison is made against stress intensity factor provided by the code.

Findings

A good agreement is obtained with percent error of 2.13 percent for low aspect ratio crack, and 0.57 percent for high aspect ratio crack. Furthermore, a study has been carried out using the methodology for 160 cases, covering both cases already available in the code and other cases of crack in cylindrical shells. The result can be used as a complement to the existing tabular data available in the code for Level 2 assessment, to be used for integrity analysis of damaged cylindrical shells based on the FAD criteria.

Originality/value

The result can be used as a complement to the existing tabular data available in the API 579 code for Level 2 assessment, to be used for integrity analysis of damaged cylindrical shells based on the FAD criteria. New equations were generated based on finite element analysis and can be used for Level 3 assessment of the code.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to mainly review the state-of-the-art developments in the field of hydrodynamics of offshore pipelines, identifying the key tools for analysis of pipeline free spans, their applications, their qualifying characteristics and capabilities and limitations.

Design/methodology/approach

These different analytical, numerical and semi-empirical tools available for predicting such hydrodynamic loads and their effects include VIVANA, PIPESIN, VIVSIM, SIMULATOR, FATFREE, amongst others. Inherent in these models are current effects, wave effects and/ or pipe–soil interactions.

Findings

Amongst these models, the most attention was given to the new VIVANA model because this model take into account the vortex-induced effects with respect to free-spanning pipelines (which have dominant effect in the span analysis in deep water) better than other semi-empirical models (such as Shear 7). Recent improvements in VIVANA include its ability to have arbitrary variation in speed and direction of current, as well as the ability for calculation of pure IL and combined IL-CF response. Improvements in fatigue assessments at free spans, i.e. pipe–soil interaction have been achieved through the combined frequency domain and non-linear time domain analysis methodology adopted. Semi-empirical models are still the de facto currently used in the design of free-spanning pipelines. However, there is need for further research on free-span hydrodynamic coefficients and on how in-line and cross-flow vibrations interact. Again, there is still the challenge due to VIV complexity in fully understanding the fluid structure interaction problem, as there is no consolidated procedure for its analysis. It has been observed that there is large scatter between the different codes adopted in the prediction of fatigue damage, as there lacks full-scale test data devoted to determination/validation of the coefficients used in the semi-empirical models. A case study of the preliminary design of a typical 48 in. pipeline has been presented in this study to demonstrate the use of the free-span analysis tool, DNV RP F105. Excel spreadsheet has been applied in the execution of formulas.

Originality/value

This review paper is the first of its kind to study the state-of-the-art development in pipeline free-span analysis models and demonstrate the use of analysis tool, DNV for MAFSL calculation. Hence, information obtained from this paper would be invaluable in assisting designers both in the industry and academia.
