Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to cover the development of a methodology for hybrid fuzzy Monte Carlo agent-based simulation (FMCABS) and its implementation on a parametric study of construction crew performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The developed methodology uses fuzzy logic, Monte Carlo simulation and agent-based modeling to simulate the behavior of construction crews and predict their performance. Both random and subjective uncertainties are considered in model variables.

Findings

The developed methodology was implemented on a real case involving the parametric study of construction crew performance to assess its applicability and suitability for this context.

Research limitations/implications

This parametric study demonstrates a practical application for the hybrid FMCABS methodology. Though findings from this study are limited to the context of construction crew motivation and performance, the applicability of the developed methodology extends beyond the construction domain.

Practical implications

This paper will help construction practitioners to predict and improve crew performance by taking into account both random and subjective uncertainties.

Social implications

This paper will advance construction modeling by allowing for the assessment of social interactions among crews and their effects on crew performance.

Originality/value

The developed hybrid FMCABS methodology represents an original contribution, as it allows agent-based models to simultaneously process all types of variables (i.e. deterministic, random and subjective) in the same simulation experiment while accounting for interactions among different agents. In addition, the developed methodology is implemented in a novel and extensive parametric study of construction crew performance.

Abstract

Purpose

Different approaches, originally developed for ambient conditions, exist in current codes and standards for incorporating the effect of moment–shear (M–V) interaction on the plastic-carrying capacity of wide-flanged (WF) steel sections. There is a lack of experimental and theoretical studies that address this issue under fire conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

The current paper presents a numerical study investigating the effect of fire exposure on the plastic M–V capacity curves of doubly symmetrical, WF, hot-rolled steel sections. Validated high-fidelity finite element (FE) models constructed via ANSYS are used to study the effect M–V interaction on the plastic capacity of WF sections. Also, a simplified plastic sectional analysis, intended to be used by engineering practitioners, is proposed for generating the plastic M–V interaction curves.

Findings

The study shows that the fire-induced non-uniform heating of the section plates affects the shape of the plastic M–V interaction capacity curves. Comparison of different methods against FE results shows that the method specified in the Eurocode is very conservative at room-temperature, but it turns out to be barely sufficiently conservative under fire conditions.

Originality/value

It is well noted that lack of fire tests on the M–V interaction, including the stability of the plates of steel sections under fire, make it difficult to reach a definite assessment on the effect of M–V interaction on the bearing capacity of steel beams.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose the use of graph theoretic structural modeling for assessing the possible reduction in complexity of the work flow procedures in an organization due to lean initiatives. A tool to assess the impact of lean initiative on complexity of the system at an early stage of decision making is proposed.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the permanent function-based graph theoretic structural model has been applied to understand the complex structure of a manufacturing system under consideration. The model helps by systematically breaking it into different sub-graphs that identify all the cycles of interactions among the subsystems in the organization in a systematic manner. The physical interpretation of the existing quantitative methods linked to graph theoretic methodology, namely two types of coefficients of dissimilarity, has been used to evolve the new measures of organizational complexity. The new methods have been deployed for studying the impact of different lean initiatives on complexity reduction in a case industrial organization.

Findings

The usefulness and the application of new proposed measures of complexity have been demonstrated with the help of three cases of lean initiatives in an industrial organization. The new measures of complexity have been proposed as a credible tool for studying the lean initiatives and their implications.

Research limitations/implications

The paper may lead many researchers to use the proposed tool to model different cases of lean manufacturing and pave a new direction for future research in lean manufacturing.

Practical implications

The paper demonstrates the application of new tools through cases and the tool may be used by practitioners of lean philosophy or total quality management to model and investigate their decisions.

Originality/value

The proposed measures of complexity are absolutely new addition to the tool box of graph theoretic structural modeling and have a potential to be adopted by practical decision makers to steer their organizations though such decisions before the costly interruptions in manufacturing systems are tried on ground.

Abstract

Purpose

With the advent of the Digital 2.0 era, online doctor–patient (D–P) interaction has become increasingly popular. However, due to the fact that doctors use their fragmented time to serve patients, online D–P interaction inevitably has some problems, such as the lack of pertinence in the reply content and doctors' relative unfamiliarity with their individual patients. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to excavate whether potential D–P social ties and D–P knowledge ties accentuate or attenuate the influence of patient selection (online and offline selection).

Design/methodology/approach

The authors used the methods of text mining and empirical analysis on the structured and unstructured data of an online consultation platform in China to examine the research hypotheses.

Findings

The findings illustrate that the potential D–P social ties increase the influence on patient selection, as do the potential D–P knowledge ties. Specifically, the effect of social ties on patient selection is positively moderated by patient health literacy. Conversely, health literacy weakens the link between knowledge ties and patient selection. In addition, the doctor's title weakens the influence of social ties on patient selection, in contrast to knowledge ties (partially).

Originality/value

This study provides guidance for doctors and patients on how to communicate effectively and alleviate tension within D–P relationships. The study’s findings have both theoretical and practical implications for both doctors' and online platforms' decision-making.

Abstract

Purpose

Artificial intelligence is gradually penetrating into human society. In the network era, the interaction between human and artificial intelligence, even between artificial intelligence, becomes more and more complex. Therefore, it is necessary to describe and intervene the evolution of crowd intelligence network dynamically. This paper aims to detect the abnormal agents at the early stage of intelligent evolution.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, differential evolution (DE) and K-means clustering are used to detect the crowd intelligence with abnormal evolutionary trend.

Findings

This study abstracts the evolution process of crowd intelligence into the solution process of DE and use K-means clustering to identify individuals who are not conducive to evolution in the early stage of intelligent evolution.

Practical implications

Experiments show that the method we proposed are able to find out individual intelligence without evolutionary trend as early as possible, even in the complex crowd intelligent interactive environment of practical application. As a result, it can avoid the waste of time and computing resources.

Originality/value

In this paper, DE and K-means clustering are combined to analyze the evolution of crowd intelligent interaction.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to address empirical analyses of the association of the VAIC and its components with firms’ market and financial performance, demonstrating that the ill definition of variables and constructs is responsible for a non-linearity concealed in the VAIC formula between two of its components (the Structural Capital Efficiency and the Human Capital Efficiency).

Design/methodology/approach

Through a conceptual analysis the paper identifies and formalises the non-linearity concealed in the VAIC formula and clarifies the relevant issues through an empirical analysis of a sample of Italian listed companies.

Findings

The paper finds that the non-linearity hidden in the VAIC formula should lead scholars to completely revise the ways they test the association of the VAIC and the market and financial performance of the firm. Useful insights are also provided for scholars interested in investigating the role of human capital, for those involved in analysing the interrelations among capitals through the introduction of interaction terms in their regression models and for researchers proposing modified versions of the VAIC. Practitioners could benefit from the paper as the non-linearity here discovered leads to a substantial of the decision-making based on the VAIC.

Originality/value

The paper offers new insights into analyses using the VAIC as it uncovers a non-linearity hidden in the VAIC, which has hitherto not been reported in the literature. The existence of this non-linearity has substantive implications for previous and future research in this domain.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss in detail the design approach to shear buckling resistance evaluation for corrugated web being a part of a steel beam exposed to fire.

Design/methodology/approach

It is based on the interaction between the local and global elastic instability failure modes as well as on the possible yielding of the whole web cross-section during fire.

Findings

New formulae, adequate for specification of the suitable shear buckling coefficients, depend not only on the web slenderness but also on the temperature of structural steel.

Originality/value

The methodology proposed by the authors can be added to the current European standard recommendations given in EN 1993-1-2 as a well-justified design algorithm helpful in reliable evaluation of a safety level for steel beams with slender corrugated webs subject to fire exposure. It seems to be highly desirable because, at present, there are no detailed instructions in this field.

Abstract

As far as steel‐rod structures are concerned the yield‐hinge theory is a very efficient approach of the ultimate‐load theory. Unfortunately, most of the published strategies suffer from considerable deficiencies which depend on two main reasons: first, the yield condition is not approximated very well, and, second, a flow rule is not incorporated at all. This may significantly affect the calculated load‐carrying behaviour and as a consequence the elasto‐plastic failure prediction. In the present paper a consistent formulation of a refined numerical method based on the yield‐hinge theory is consistently developed from the theory of plasticity. The derivation is carried out in the framework of a geometrically nonlinear Timoshenko beam theory discretized for the displacement based finite element method. The plastic deformations can be interpreted as three‐dimensional eccentric yield‐hinges (generalized yield‐hinges). The presented numerical xamples show the efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract

The cross-sectional capacity of steel sections subjected to fire is strongly affected by the decreasing stiffness during heating and the nonlinear stress-strain relationship of steel at elevated temperatures. This paper analyses the cross-sectional capacity of common steel sections subjected to combined axial compression and biaxial bending moments at both ambient and elevated temperatures considering section yielding and local buckling effects. The results of a parametric study using the finite element approach are presented as temperature-dependent normalized N-M interaction curves and are compared to results using elastic and plastic interaction formulae. A comparative study shows that European fire design models may lead to conservative results for semi-compact and slender cross sections (class 3 and 4 sections) due to the partial plastic capacity of these sections. However, for steel members predominately subjected to axial compression the design models may lead to unconservative results due to local buckling deflections that occur even for plastic and compact sections (class 1 and 2).

Abstract

Purpose

This study intends to explore the relationship between digital finance and the vertical specialization of firms. The following questions are discussed: (1) As a representative new financial development model, what is the role of digital finance in the vertical specialization of firms? (2) If digital finance improves the level of vertical specialization of firms, what is the mechanism behind such improvement? (3) How does digital finance impact the vertical specialization of firms in different regions, industries, and firms?

Design/methodology/approach

A two-way fixed-effect model of panel data is proposed to verify the relationship between digital finance and the vertical specialization of firms. This model is constructed by matching the city-level data of digital finance with the data of China's A-share listed companies from 2011 to 2018. Meanwhile, the instrumental variable (IV) method and difference-in-difference (DID) method are adopted to deal with the endogeneity problem of the model.

Findings

The authors' study finds that digital finance has significantly improved the level of vertical specialization of firms. The result is robust under the endogeneity consideration and a series of robustness tests. After the dimensionality of the index is reduced, the depth of digital finance usage is more conducive to the improvement of the vertical specialization of firms compared with the width of digital finance coverage and the level of financial digitization. Digital finance mainly improves the level of vertical specialization of firms by reducing transaction costs and increasing the market thickness of the intermediate products. Moreover, digital finance has certain heterogeneity in promoting the vertical specialization of firms, an effect that is more significant in the eastern region, manufacturing industry and state-owned enterprises (SOEs).

Research limitations/implications

The first limitation is the mechanism test. This research only analyzes the mechanism from transaction cost and the market thickness of the intermediate products. With the rapid development of information technology, digital finance will be further integrated into people's production and life. There will then be more mechanisms that should be explored between digital finance and the vertical specialization of firms. Another limitation is the data sample of this paper. The conclusions of this research are based only on the data of listed companies. However, in the authors' opinion, the specialization level of small and medium-sized enterprise (SMEs) should be higher. Therefore, the conclusions of this work are underestimated, which can be considered as the lower limit of digital finance for enterprise specialization.

Social implications

As a favorable financing channel to supplement traditional financial service functions, digital finance plays a critical role in the operating efficiency of enterprises and the effective allocation of macro resources. The authors' research shows that digital finance has significantly improved the vertical specialization of firms. This conclusion provides guides to improve the production efficiency of enterprises and the quality of economic development.

Originality/value

This paper has three main contributions. (1) The relationship between financial development and the vertical specialization of firms is innovatively discussed from the perspective of digital finance, which implies that digital finance can effectively promote the level of vertical specialization of firms. (2) This paper provides new perspectives and ideas to reveal the impact mechanism of digital finance on the real economy by systematically analyzing the mechanism of digital finance on the vertical specialization of firms from the perspectives of transaction costs and financing constraints. (3) The regional differences in the development of digital finance, industry differences in the vertical specialization of firms and differences in the nature of enterprise property rights are all under consideration, which improves the effectiveness and pertinence of digital finance in promoting the vertical specialization of firms.
