Abstract

Purpose

Promoting interns’ organizational socialization has become an urgent concern for the hotel industry. Building on career construction theory, this study aims to use a time-lagged design to investigate the interrelationships among perceived organizational support (POS), psychological capital and organizational socialization and their consequent effects on interns’ intention to stay in the hotel industry.

Design/methodology/approach

Panel data were obtained in three waves from hotel interns from 21 upscale hotels located in 13 cities in China with a time lag of 10 weeks (N = 369). The structural equation modeling was used for data analysis.

Findings

POS has a significantly positive effect on interns' psychological capital. Additionally, both POS and psychological capital contribute to the intention to stay in the hotel industry through the mediation of organizational socialization.

Practical implications

Hotels should communicate with interns more explicitly, provide assistance programs to alleviate uncertainty and reward interns on their excellent service performance to improve POS. Moreover, setting up psychological capital programs and empowering interns to be involved in task development is beneficial for enhancing psychological capital. Hotels should also consider mentoring as a socialization approach. Further, career planning and counseling programs should be provided for interns’ long-term hospitality career development.

Originality/value

A time-lagged research method is adopted to provide a new approach to improve interns’ intention to stay in the hotel industry from the interactionist perspective. This study enriches research about psychological capital, POS and organizational socialization.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between returning consumer environmental behaviour and tourists’ propensity to stay in a green hotel, particularly in the Malaysian context. Next, the influence of a moderating variable (i.e. green hotel knowledge) on returning tourists’ propensity to stay in a green hotel is also examined.

Design/methodology/approach

The research used a hierarchical regression for data analysis across a sample of 400 young respondents who stayed at a green hotel at least once in a year. Their participation was purely voluntary.

Findings

Empirical analysis via hierarchical regressions confirmed that returning tourists’ intention to stay at a green hotel was influenced positively by perceived behavioural control and attitude. However, the subjective norm was found to be not significantly related to returning tourists’ intention to stay at a green hotel.

Research limitations/implications

The current data were only collected from respondents within one area which may not represent the entire population of Malaysia. Hence, it is imperative that sample size be expanded, and wider geographical areas with different cultural values covered to improve generalizability of findings.

Practical implications

These empirical results may benefit the hotel industry involved in green initiatives and activities in formulating effective marketing strategies to review the demand of returning consumers to stay in green hotels and evaluate the acceptance level of the returning consumers towards green behaviour. The hotel industry should take its environmental and social responsibility seriously and uphold aspects of energy efficiency, natural resources and environment and indoor environmental quality in business operations in a sustainable manner besides focusing on maximizing profit.

Originality/value

The results of this study offer a new forward motion to the findings of prior studies on environmental behaviour, which is not much covered in the literature in the Malaysian context by providing additional information in narrowing the research gap with regard to understanding returning consumers’ intention to stay in green hotels. Next, the proposed framework could be the basis for further research investigating returning consumers’ intention to stay in green hotels, within the Malaysian context.

Abstract

This study focuses on tourists’ perceptions of a capsule hotel, a budget form of accommodation with a unique appearance and the small size of a sleeping pod. The data were obtained in Bangkok from 402 foreign travellers from over 30 countries. The results indicate that room size, sleep ambient control system and in-room television were the three main attributes that were positively correlated with decisions to stay in such hotels. Tourists with previous experience of staying in capsule hotels had more positive perceptions regarding room size and indicated higher intentions to stay than those without such experience. The researchers also found that budgetary considerations negatively moderated the relationship between room size and intention-to-stay. Additionally, the relationship between intention-to-stay and three other hotel attributes, including room size, the service scape and perceived security, was weaker for female travellers than for male travellers. Lastly, risk avoidance also positively moderated the relationship between intention-to-stay and location and security.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to investigate hotel employees’ intentions to stay in industry with the mediating role of psychological contract fulfilment (PCF) and moderating role of positive emotions and position held (frontline employees vs managers) in post-lockdown era.

Design/methodology/approach

The study has followed quantitative approach following the cross-sectional design. 414 respondents of hotel industry were contacted via online and offline method. The data was analysed using partial least square method using SmartPLS 3.0.

Findings

The findings suggest that perceived organizational support and supervisor trust had a good impact on psychological contract fulfilment and contributed positively to psychological empowerment. Additionally, psychological empowerment positively impacted psychological well-being and psychological well-being positively impacted intention to stay in hotel industry. PCF positively mediated the relationship between organizational support, trust in supervisor and psychological empowerment. Positive emotions positively moderated the relationship between PCF and psychological empowerment. Multi-group analysis revealed that the managers and frontline employees perceived the PCF and psychological well-being differently.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is one of the few to explore the intention to stay in hotel industry by integrating social exchange theory, organization support theory and broaden-and-build theory post lockdown circumstances.

本研究旨在探讨后封锁时代心理契约履行的中介作用与积极情绪和职位(一线员工vs管理者)的调节作用影响下酒店员工留任意向。

研究方法

采用定量方法的横断面设计。通过线上和线下的方式联系了414位酒店行业的受访者。使用Smartpls 3.0软件对数据进行偏最小二乘法分析。

研究发现

组织支持感和上级信任感对心理契约履行有显著影响, 对心理赋能有正向影响。此外, 心理赋能正向影响心理幸福感, 心理幸福感正向影响酒店业留任意愿。心理契约履行正向中介组织支持、主管信任与心理赋能之间的关系。积极情绪正向调节心理契约履行与心理赋能的关系。多群体分析显示, 管理者和一线员工对心理契约履行和心理幸福感的感知存在差异。

独创性

本文结合社会交换理论、组织支持理论和扩宽构建理论, 是为数不多探讨后封锁环境下酒店业留任意愿的研究。

Objetivo

El estudio tiene como objetivo investigar la intención de los empleados de hotel de permanecer en la industria con el papel mediador del cumplimiento del contrato psicológico y el papel moderador de las emociones positivas y la posición ocupada (empleados de primera línea v/s directivos) en la era post-cierre patronal.

Metodología

El estudio ha seguido un enfoque cuantitativo con un diseño transversal. Se contactó con 414 encuestados del sector hotelero a través de métodos online y offline. Los datos se analizaron mediante el método de mínimos cuadrados parciales con Smartpls 3.0.

Resultados

Los resultados sugieren que el apoyo organizativo percibido y la confianza del supervisor tuvieron un buen impacto en el cumplimiento del contrato psicológico y contribuyeron positivamente a la capacitación psicológica. Además, el empoderamiento psicológico influyó positivamente en el bienestar psicológico y el bienestar psicológico influyó positivamente en la intención de permanecer en la industria hotelera. El cumplimiento del contrato psicológico medió positivamente en la relación entre el apoyo organizativo, la confianza en el supervisor y el empoderamiento psicológico. Las emociones positivas moderaron positivamente la relación entre el cumplimiento del contrato psicológico y la capacitación psicológica. El análisis multigrupo reveló que los directivos y los empleados de primera línea percibían de forma diferente el cumplimiento del contrato psicológico y el bienestar psicológico.

Originalidad

El estudio es uno de los pocos que exploran la intención de permanecer en la industria hotelera integrando la teoría del intercambio social, la teoría del apoyo organizativo y la teoría de ampliar y construir en circunstancias posteriores al cierre.

Abstract

Purpose

Given the rapid development in artificial intelligence (AI), the hotel industry is deploying AI-based systems. In line with this important development, this study aims to examine the impact of trust in the hotel and AI-related performance ambiguity on consumers’ engagement with AI-based systems. This study ultimately examined the impact of engagement on consumers’ intentions to stay in hotels offering such systems, and intentions to tip.

Design/methodology/approach

This study developed a conceptual model based on the social cognition theory. The study used an online survey methodology and collected data from a nationwide sample of 400 hotel consumers from the USA. The data analysis was conducted with structural equation modeling.

Findings

Consumers’ engagement is strongly influenced by their trust in the hotel but not by performance ambiguity associated with AI. In turn, engagement strongly influenced consumers’ intentions to stay in hotels that have such systems and their intentions to tip.

Originality/value

As AI systems capable of making decisions for consumers are becoming increasingly present in hotels, little is known about the way consumers engage with such systems and whether their engagement leads to economic impact. This is the first study that validated a model that explains intentions to stay and tip for services facilitated by autonomous AI-based systems that can make decisions for consumers.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on protection motivation theory (PMT) and expectancy theory, this study aims to investigate consumers’ lodging consumption intentions during a pandemic crisis.

Design/methodology/approach

The research survey was conducted during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic (August, 2020) in the USA to investigate consumers’ lodging intentions amidst the pandemic crisis. PLS-SEM and multiple regression were conducted to explore answers to proposed research questions.

Findings

The research finds that, during the pandemic crisis, consumers’ lodging consumption intentions are subject to both their internal protection motivation evaluations and the external prevention practices implemented by the lodging facilities regardless of property types and travel purposes. Notably, the research finds that consumers are willing to make efforts and pay extra for a safe stay at lodging facilities.

Research limitations/implications

This research contributes to the literature regarding the applications of PMT and expectancy theory from a crisis management perspective, and it provides implications and guidelines to the crisis management practices in the lodging industry.

Originality/value

The current research examines the specific protection motivation appraisal factors and prevention practices significantly impacting consumers’ decisions in terms of willingness to stay at various lodging facilities (hotels and non-hotel homestay/short-term rental properties) for different purposes (business and leisure) and to pay premiums for a safe stay.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationships among consumers’ environmental value, low-carbon knowledge, perceived value of green hotels and behavioral intention to stay in green hotels as well as willingness to cooperate with green hotels’ environmentally friendly practices.

Design/methodology/approach

Structural equation modeling and indirect effect estimation through bootstrapping technique were performed using 415 valid questionnaires collected from customers who had green hotel stay experiences in Taiwan.

Findings

The analytical results indicate that environmental value and low-carbon knowledge positively affect perceived value of green hotels, which in turn positively affect consumers’ behavioral intention to stay in green hotels and willingness to cooperate with green hotels’ environmentally friendly practices. Perceived value of green hotels also partially mediates the effects of environmental value and low-carbon knowledge on two behavioral intention variables.

Practical implications

This study provides numerous valuable implications for green hotel operators to develop effective strategies to increase consumers’ perceived value of green hotels and their behavioral intention toward green hotels.

Originality/value

This study is among the first to test not only the main effects of environmental value and knowledge on consumer perceptions of the value of green hotels, but also the mediating effect of consumers’ perceived value of green hotels for the relationships between environmental value, environmental knowledge and two behavioral intentions toward green hotels.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the effects of environmental knowledge, perceived environmental responsibility and altruism on tourist’s intention to stay in green hotels. In addition, the mediating role played by tourists’ attitudes, including ecocentric and anthropocentric attitudes, is explored.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 393 international tourists in Malaysia. This study followed a cross-sectional approach and applied the partial least squares – structural equation modelling using SmartPLS version 3 software to analyse the data and test the hypotheses.

Findings

The results indicated that environmental knowledge, altruism, environmental responsibility and ecocentric and anthropocentric attitudes positively influence tourists’ intention to stay in green hotels. Ecocentric attitudes mediate environmental knowledge, altruism, environmental responsibility and intention to stay in green hotels. However, environmental knowledge and altruism do not influence anthropocentric attitudes. Likewise, anthropocentric attitudes do not mediate the relationship between environmental knowledge, altruism, perceived environmental responsibility and intention to stay in green hotels.

Research limitations/implications

This study posed several theoretical and practical implications that will benefit future researchers and practitioners while exploring tourists’ behaviour in a green hotel context.

Originality/value

This study makes a unique and significant contribution by including ecocentric and anthropocentric attitudes in a unified model underpinned by the Theory of Planned Behaviour and the Value-Basis Theory.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a deeper understanding of the effective use of Facebook within the hotel industry. It explored which current Facebook practices are effective/persuasive using the elaboration likelihood model (ELM) as the main theoretical foundation.

Design/methodology/approach

Using an experimental design, the effects of consumers’ exposure to treatments, involving different levels of elaboration and source credibility, were examined to determine whether consumer’s process information from Facebook communication through a central or peripheral route.

Findings

The results of this research showed that consumer attitudes are affected by the source credibility, but not by the level of elaboration. Also, intentions to stay at the hotel and intentions to engage with the hotel brand via social media were not affected by the level of elaboration or source credibility.

Research limitations/implications

This study presents an important step forward in understanding how consumer persuasion takes place in an online environment. Also, this paper provides a first-hand account of the manner in which social media adds value to a business organization. In addition, this paper provides insight on how consumers process online information.

Originality/value

As this is the first conceptualization of the ELM in a social media context, this study is uniquely able to explain the concept of persuasion in the hotel industry. Such knowledge is invaluable to academics and hotel decision makers, especially because the research provides specific insights on the manner in which attitudes change in consumers.

Abstract

Purpose

This study integrates the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and value-belief-norm (VBN) theory to investigate tourists' intention and behaviour to visit green hotels in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 160 valid questionnaire responses were collected via an online survey. The partial least square–structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) technique was utilised to assess the study framework and the hypothesised relationship.

Findings

The study's results confirmed that tourists' intention to stay at a green hotel is directly influenced by their subjective norms and perceived behavioural control. Besides, the study confirms the insignificant relationship between green trust, personal norms and tourists' stay intention. On the other hand, perceived morals, responsibility, willingness to pay more and perceived consumer effectiveness were significant in explaining the customer's subjective norms, personal norms and perceived behaviour control.

Research limitations/implications

The hotel industry may benefit from this empirical outcome to devise effective marketing strategies for retaining their customers, particularly in rejuvenating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the industry.

Practical implications

This study provides valuable practical implications for green hotel operators to develop effective strategies to attract tourists to green hotel visits.

Originality/value

This study is the first to integrate the extended TPB and VBN theory to understand tourist intention to visit a green hotel. Notably, the extended TPB and VBN theory was practical and helpful in predicting tourist intention to visit a green hotel.
