Abstract

In this paper, we study a partially linear dynamic panel data model with fixed effects, where either exogenous or endogenous variables or both enter the linear part, and the lagged-dependent variable together with some other exogenous variables enter the nonparametric part. Two types of estimation methods are proposed for the first-differenced model. One is composed of a semiparametric GMM estimator for the finite-dimensional parameter θ and a local polynomial estimator for the infinite-dimensional parameter m based on the empirical solutions to Fredholm integral equations of the second kind, and the other is a sieve IV estimate of the parametric and nonparametric components jointly. We study the asymptotic properties for these two types of estimates when the number of individuals N tends to and the time period T is fixed. We also propose a specification test for the linearity of the nonparametric component based on a weighted square distance between the parametric estimate under the linear restriction and the semiparametric estimate under the alternative. Monte Carlo simulations suggest that the proposed estimators and tests perform well in finite samples. We apply the model to study the relationship between intellectual property right (IPR) protection and economic growth, and find that IPR has a non-linear positive effect on the economic growth rate.

Abstract

This paper explores the use of some stochastic models for traffic assignment in the case of homogeneous traffic and simple networks. For non-dynamic routing we obtain asymptotic results in the form of paths representing time dependent evolution of traffic over routes. A functional limit theorem gives integral equations for the limiting fluid path which converges to an assignment satisfying Wardrop's first principle as time goes to infinity. For linear cost functions we are able to use the theory of large deviations to examine the way in which rare network overload events occur. In the case of dynamic assignment, we discuss the use of heavy traffic limits and Brownian models to examine the efficiency of network capacity usage when drivers choose routes according to conditions obtaining on entrance to the network. In particular we discuss the phenomenon of resource pooling.

Abstract

This chapter proposes a nonparametric estimator of the risk neutral density (RND) based on cross-sectional European option prices. The authors recast the arbitrage-free equation for option pricing as a functional linear regression model where the regressor is a curve and the independent variable is a scalar corresponding to the option price. Then, the authors show that the RND can be viewed as the solution of an ill-posed integral equation. To estimate the RND, the authors use an iterative method called Landweber-Fridman (LF). Then, the authors establish the consistency and asymptotic normality of the estimated RND. These results can be used to construct a confidence interval around the curve. Finally, some Monte Carlo simulations and application to the S&P 500 options show that this method performs well compared to alternative methods.

Abstract

This chapter has been seminal work of Dr K.S.S. Iyer, which has taken time to develop, for over the last 56 years to be presented here. The method in advance predictive analytics has developed, from his several other applications, in predictive modeling by using the stochastic point process technique. In the chapter on advance predictive analytics, Dr Iyer is collecting his approaches and generalizing it in this chapter. In this chapter, two of the techniques of stochastic point process known as Product Density and Random point process used in modelling problems in High energy particles and cancer, are redefined to suit problems currently in demand in IoT and customer equity in marketing (Iyer, Patil, & Chetlapalli, 2014b). This formulation arises from these techniques being used in different fields like energy requirement in Internet of Things (IoT) devices, growth of cancer cells, cosmic rays’ study, to customer equity and many more approaches.

Abstract

This paper examines Aman Ullah’s contributions to robust inference, finite sample econometrics, nonparametrics and semiparametrics, and panel and spatial models. His early works on robust inference and finite sample theory were mostly motivated by his thesis advisor, Professor Anirudh Lal Nagar. They eventually led to his most original rethinking of many statistics and econometrics models that developed into the monograph Finite Sample Econometrics published in 2004. His desire to relax distributional and functional-form assumptions lead him in the direction of nonparametric estimation and he summarized his views in his most influential textbook Nonparametric Econometrics (with Adrian Pagan) published in 1999 that has influenced a whole generation of econometricians. His innovative contributions in the areas of seemingly unrelated regressions, parametric, semiparametric and nonparametric panel data models, and spatial models have also inspired a larger literature on nonparametric and semiparametric estimation and inference and spurred on research in robust estimation and inference in these and related areas.

Abstract

The authors propose a family of tests for stationarity against a local unit root. It builds on the Karhunen–Loève (KL) expansions of the limiting CUSUM process under the null hypothesis and a local alternative. The variance ratio type statistic VRq is a ratio of quadratic forms of q weighted Gaussian sums such that the nuisance long-run variance cancels asymptotically without having to be estimated. Asymptotic critical values and local power functions can be calculated by standard numerical means, and power grows with q. However, Monte Carlo experiments show that q may not be too large in finite samples to obtain tests with correct size under the null. Balancing size and power results in a superior performance compared to the classic KPSS test.
