Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to find the thermo-hydraulic performances of compact heat exchangers (CHE’s), which are strongly depending upon the prediction of performance of various types of heat transfer surfaces such as offset strip fins, wavy fins, rectangular fins, triangular fins, triangular and rectangular perforated fins in terms of Colburn “jand Fanning friction “f” factors.

Design/methodology/approach

Numerical methods play a major role for analysis of compact plate-fin heat exchangers, which are cost-effective and fast. This paper presents the on-going research and work carried out earlier for single-phase steady-state heat transfer and pressure drop analysis on CHE passages and fins. An analysis of a cross-flow plate-fin compact heat exchanger, accounting for the individual effects of two-dimensional longitudinal heat conduction through the exchanger wall, inlet fluid flow maldistribution and inlet temperature non-uniformity are carried out using a Finite Element Method (FEM).

Findings

The performance deterioration of high-efficiency cross-flow plate-fin compact heat exchangers have been reviewed with the combined effects of wall longitudinal heat conduction and inlet fluid flow/temperature non-uniformity using a dedicated FEM analysis. It is found that the performance deterioration is quite significant in some typical applications due to the effects of wall longitudinal heat conduction and inlet fluid flow non-uniformity on cross-flow plate-fin heat exchangers. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) program FLUENT has been used to predict the design data in terms of “j” and “f” factors for plate-fin heat exchanger fins. The suitable design data are generated using CFD analysis covering the laminar, transition and turbulent flow regimes for various types of fins.

Originality/value

The correlations for the friction factor “f” and Colburn factor “j” have been found to be good. The correlations can be used by the heat exchanger designers and can reduce the number of tests and modification of the prototype to a minimum for similar applications and types of fins.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate a new circuitous minichannel cold plate (MCP) design involving flow fragmentation. The overall thermal performance and the temperature uniformity analysis are performed and compared with the traditional serpentine design. The substrate thickness and its thermal conductivity are varied to analyse the effect of axial-back conduction due to the conjugate nature of heat transfer.

Design/methodology/approach

The traditional serpentine minichannel is modified into five new fragmented designs with two inlets and two outlets. A three-dimensional numerical model involving the effect of conjugate heat transfer with a single-phase laminar fluid flow subjected to constant heat flux is solved using a finite volume-based computational fluid dynamics solver.

Findings

The minimum and maximum temperature differences are observed for the two branch fragmented flow designs. The two-branch and middle channel fragmented design shows better temperature uniformity over other designs while the three-branch fragmented designs exhibited better hydrodynamic performance.

Practical implications

MCPs could be used as an indirect liquid cooling method for battery thermal management of pouch and prismatic cells. Coupling the modified cold plates with a battery module and investigating the effect of different battery parameters and environmental effects in a transient state are the prospects for further research.

Originality/value

The study involves several aspects of evaluation for a conclusive decision on optimum channel design by analysing the performance plot between the temperature uniformity index, average base temperature and overall thermal performance. The new fragmented channels are designed in a way to facilitate the fluid towards the outlet in the minimum possible path thereby reducing the pressure drop, also maximizing the heat transfer and temperature uniformity from the substrate due to two inlets and a reversed-flow pattern. Simplified minichannel designs are proposed in this study for practical deployment and ease of manufacturability.

Abstract

Purpose

Currently, human hearts destined for transplantation can be used for 4.5 hours which is often insufficient to test the heart, the purpose of this paper is to find a compatible recipient and transport the heart to larger distances. Cooling systems with simultaneous internal and external liquid cooling were numerically simulated as a method to extend the usable life of human hearts.

Design/methodology/approach

Coolant was pumped inside major veins and through the cardiac chambers and also between the heart and cooling container walls. In Case 1, two inlets and two outlets on the container walls steadily circulated the coolant. In the Case 2, an additional inlet was specified on the container wall thus creating a steady jet impinging one of the thickest parts of the heart. Laminar internal flow and turbulent external flow were used in both cases. Unsteady periodic inlet velocities at two frequencies were applied in Case 3 and Case 4 that had four inlets and four outlets on walls with turbulent flows used for internal and external circulations.

Findings

Computational results show that the proposed cooling systems are able to reduce the heart temperature from +37°C to almost uniform +5°C within 25 min of cooling, thus reducing its metabolic rate of decay by 95 percent. Calculated combined thermal and hydrodynamic stresses were below the allowable threshold. Unsteady flows did not make any noticeable difference in the speed of cooling and uniformity of temperature field.

Originality/value

This is the pioneering numerical study of conjugate convective cooling schemes capable of cooling organs much faster and more uniformly than currently practiced.

Abstract

A comprehensive series of tests have been made on an experimental single‐stage turbine to determine the cooling characteristics and the overall stage performance of a set of air‐cooled turbine blades. These blades, which arc described fully in Part I of this paper had, internally, a multiplicity of passages of small diameter along which cool air was passed through the whole length of the blade. Analysis of the test data indicated that, when a quantity of cooling air amounting to 2 per cent, by weight, of the total gas‐flow through the turbine is fed to the row of rotor blades, an increase in gas temperature of about 270 dcg. C. (518 deg. F.) should be permissible above the maximum allowable value for a row of uncoolcd blades made from the same material. The degree of cooling achieved throughout each blade was far from uniform and large thermal stresses must result. It appears, however, that the consequences of this are not highly detrimental to the performance of the present type of blading, it being demonstrated that the main effect of the induced thermal stress isapparently to transfer the major tensile stresses to the cooler (and hence stronger) regions of the blade. The results obtained from the present investigations do not represent a limit to the potentialities of internal air‐cooling, but form merely a first exploratory step. At the same time the practical feasibility of air cooling is made apparent, and advances up to the present arc undoubtedly encouraging.

Abstract

Purpose

One of the most critical gas turbine engine components, the rotor blade tip and casing, is exposed to high thermal load. It becomes a significant design challenge to protect the turbine materials from this severe situation. The purpose of this paper is to study numerically the effect of turbine inlet temperature on the tip leakage flow structure and heat transfer.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the effect of turbine inlet temperature on the tip leakage flow structure and heat transfer has been studied numerically. Uniform low (LTIT: 444 K) and high (HTIT: 800 K) turbine inlet temperature, as well as non‐uniform inlet temperature have been considered.

Findings

The results showed the higher turbine inlet temperature yields the higher velocity and temperature variations in the leakage flow aerodynamics and heat transfer. For a given turbine geometry and on‐design operating conditions, the turbine power output can be increased by 1.33 times, when the turbine inlet temperature increases 1.80 times. Whereas the averaged heat fluxes on the casing and the blade tip become 2.71 and 2.82 times larger, respectively. Therefore, about 2.8 times larger cooling capacity is required to keep the same turbine material temperature. Furthermore, the maximum heat flux on the blade tip of high turbine inlet temperature case reaches up to 3.348 times larger than that of LTIT case. The effect of the interaction of stator and rotor on heat transfer features is also explored using unsteady simulations. The non‐uniform turbine inlet temperature enhances the heat flux fluctuation on the blade tip and casing.

Originality/value

The increase of turbine inlet temperature is usually proposed to achieve the higher turbine efficiency and the higher turbine power output. However, it has not been reported how much the heat transfer into the blade tip and casing increases with the increased turbine inlet temperature. This paper investigates the heat transfer distributions on the rotor blade tip and casing, associated with the tip leakage flow under high and low turbine inlet temperatures, as well as non‐uniform temperature distribution.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the effects of air inlet flow rate on the bearing cavity and operating conditions during the oil-air lubrication.

Design/methodology/approach

A model of oil-air lubrication of rolling bearings is established using computational fluid dynamics numerical simulation. Moreover, temperature and vibration experiments are carried out for comparisons and validation.

Findings

Results suggest that the velocity and pressure distributions of the oil-air flow inside the chamber are not uniform. Moreover, the uniform decreases with increasing air inlet flow rate. The non-uniform oil distribution inside the bearing significantly influences the bearing temperature rise and lubrication effect. Furthermore, the decrease in pressure uniformity enhances the vibration intensity and increases the amplitude of the vibration acceleration by more than 40 per cent. Increasing the air inlet flow rate improves lubrication and cooling efficiency but produces intense vibrations.

Originality/value

A method of establishing rolling bearings model under oil-air lubrication is presented in the paper. The effect of air inlet flow rate on flow uniform under oil-air lubrication has been researched insightfully. The results provide a useful reference to improve the oil-air lubrication system and enhance the operational stability of the motorized spindle.

Abstract

Purpose

Heat exchangers working in cryogenic temperature ranges are strongly affected by heat ingression from the ambient. This paper aims to investigate the effect of ambient heat-in-leak on the performance of a three-fluid cross-flow cryogenic heat exchanger.

Design/methodology/approach

The governing equations are derived for a three-fluid cross-flow cryogenic heat exchanger based on the conservation of energy principle. For given fluid inlet temperatures, the governing equations are solved using the finite element method to obtain exit temperatures of the three-fluid exchanger. The performance of the heat exchanger is determined using effectiveness-number of transfer units (e-NTU) method. In the present analysis, the amount of ambient heat-in-leak to the heat exchanger is accounted by two parameters Ht and Hb. The variation of the heat exchanger effectiveness due to ambient heat-in-leak is analyzed for various non-dimensional parameters defined to study the heat exchanger performance.

Findings

The effect of ambient heat in leak to the heat exchanger from the surrounding is to increase the dimensionless exit mean temperature of all three fluids. An increase in heat in leak parameter (Ht = Hb) value from 0 to 0.1 reduces hot fluid effectiveness by 32 per cent for an NTU value of 10.

Originality Value

The effect of heat-in-leak on a three-fluid cross-flow cryogenic heat exchanger is significant, but so far, no investigations are carried out. The results establish the efficacy of the method and throw light on important considerations involved in the design of such heat exchangers.

Abstract

ALTHOUGH numerous papers and lectures presented to the Royal Aeronautical Society have mentioned the upward trend in turbine inlet gas temperatures, there has been no review of the status of blade cooling technology since 1956, when Ainley's classic paper ‘The High Temperature Turbo‐jet’ was published. Accordingly it is the aim of this paper to present such a review. Before doing so it is worth while to compare the engine situation today with what it was in 1956. At that time, much of the available experience in the U.K. on air cooled turbines was based on experimental units, designed for the express purpose of measuring blade temperatures under controlled conditions of cooling airflow and high gas temperature. These research turbines had also yielded some useful preliminary data on the aerodynamic effects of cooling air discharge and on thermal stress and creep problems. Some engine experience had been attained, mainly (in the U.K.) with engines such as the Avon, Conway and Tyne. Whereas many of the research turbine and cascade blades had fairly complex patterns of relatively small cooling passages, the blades which had been submitted to engine running usually had a few comparatively large passages. Rotating blades were made exclusively by forging and extrusion processes from wrought nickel‐base alloys. Some nozzle guide vanes were cast.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present the numerical models and experimental outcomes pertain to the performance of the parabolic dish concentrator system with a modified cavity-type receiver (hemispherical-shaped).

Design/methodology/approach

The numerical models were evolved based on two types of boundary conditions; isothermal receiver surface and non-isothermal receiver surface. For validation of the numerical models with experimental results, three statistical terms were used: mean of absolute deviation, R2 and root mean square error.

Findings

The thermal efficiency of the receiver values obtained using the numerical model with a non-isothermal receiver surface found agreeing well with experimental results. The numerical model with non-isothermal surface boundary condition exhibited more accurate results as compared to that with isothermal surface boundary condition. The receiver heat loss analysis based on the experimental outcomes is also carried out to estimate the contributions of various modes of heat transfer. The losses by radiation, convection and conduction contribute about 27.47%, 70.89% and 1.83%, in the total receiver loss, respectively.

Practical implications

An empirical correlation based on experimental data is also presented to anticipate the effect of studied parameters on the receiver collection efficiency. The anticipations may help to adopt the technology for practical use.

Social implications

The developed models would help to design and anticipating the performance of the dish concentrator system with a modified cavity receiver that may be used for applications e.g. power generation, water heating, air-conditioning, solar cooking, solar drying, energy storage, etc.

Originality/value

The originality of this manuscript comprising presenting a differential-mathematical analysis/modeling of hemispherical shaped modified cavity receiver with non-uniform surface temperature boundary condition. It can estimate the variation of temperature of heat transfer fluid (water) along with the receiver height, by taking into account the receiver cavity losses by means of radiation and convection modes. The model also considers the radiative heat exchange among the internal ring-surface elements of the cavity.

Abstract

A computational study of convective heat transfer for turbulent flows in multi‐channel, narrow‐gap fuel element has been carried out, using a general marching procedure. The fluid distribution adjustment among seven annular‐sector channels is based on the assumption of the same pressure drop in these passages. It was found that the inlet velocities of the bilateral channels are lower than those of the middles, and the axial local heat transfer coefficients for the seven channels do not approach the fully developed constant value. At each cross section, the periphery temperature distribution is not uniform, while the local temperature distribution along axial coordinate is of sinuous type with the peak at x=0.7–0.8 m. At the same Reynolds number, the averaged Nusselt numbers of water in Channel 1 and Channel 7 are higher than those in the middles. The maximum surface temperature increases almost linearly with the inlet water temperature, whereas it decreases almost asymptotically with the inlet average velocity.
