Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to propose numerical-based and experiment-based identification processes, accounting for uncertainties to identify structural parameters, in a wave propagation framework.
Design/methodology/approach
A variant of the inhomogeneous wave correlation (IWC) method is proposed. It consists on identifying the propagation parameters, such as the wavenumber and the wave attenuation, from the frequency response functions. The latters can be computed numerically or experimentally. The identification process is thus called numerical-based or experiment-based, respectively. The proposed variant of the IWC method is then combined with the Latin hypercube sampling method for uncertainty propagation. Stochastic processes are consequently proposed allowing more realistic identification.
Findings
The proposed variant of the IWC method permits to identify accurately the propagation parameters of isotropic and composite beams, whatever the type of the identification process in which it is included: numerical-based or experiment-based. Its efficiency is proved with respect to an analytical model and the Mc Daniel method, considered as reference. The application of the stochastic identification processes shows good agreement between simulation and experiment-based results and that all identified parameters are affected by uncertainties, except damping.
Originality/value
The proposed variant of the IWC method is an accurate alternative for structural identification on wide frequency ranges. Numerical-based identification process can reduce experiments’ cost without significant loss of accuracy. Statistical investigations of the randomness of identified parameters illustrate the robustness of identification against uncertainties.

Abstract
Proposes a new approach for analysing the stationary random response of complex structures located in a non‐homogeneous stochastic field. The approach is a kind of complete CQC method because the cross‐correlation terms between both the participant modes and the ground joint excitations are included in the response calculations. Also takes into account the effect of the loss of coherency between ground joints.

Abstract
Purpose
Crack damage detection for aluminum alloy materials using fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor is a kind of structure health monitoring. In this paper, the damage index of full width at half maximum (FWHM) was extracted from the distorted reflection spectra caused by the crack-tip inhomogeneous strain field, so as to explain the crack propagation behaviors.
Design/methodology/approach
The FWHM variations were also investigated through combining the theoretical calculations with simulation and experimental analyses. The transfer matrix algorithm was developed to explore the mechanism by which FWHM changed with the linear and quadratic strain. Moreover, the crack-tip inhomogeneous strain field on the specimen surface was computed according to the digital image correlation measurement during the experiments.
Findings
The experimental results demonstrated that the saltation points in FWHM curve accorded with the moments of crack propagation to FBG sensors.
Originality/value
The interpretation of reflected spectrum deformation mechanism with crack propagation was analyzed based on both simulations and experiments, and then the performance of potential damage features – FWHM were proposed and evaluated. According to the correlation between the damage characteristic and the crack-tip location, the crack-tip of the specimen could be measured rapidly and accurately with this technique.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to describe various aspects of the visco-elastoplastic (VEP) behavior of porous-hardened concrete samples in relation to standard tests.
Design/methodology/approach
The problem is formulated on the basis of the rheological-dynamic analogy (RDA). In this study, changes in creep coefficient, Poisson's ratio, damage variables, modulus of elasticity, strength and angle of internal friction as a function of porosity are defined by P and S wave velocities. The RDA model provides a description of the degradation process of material properties from their peak state to their ultimate values using void volume fraction (VVF).
Findings
Compared to numerous versions of acoustic emission tracking developed to analyze the behavior of total wave propagation in inhomogeneous media with density variations, the proposed model is comprehensive in interpretation and consistent with physical understanding. The comparison of the damage variables with the theoretical variables under the assumption of spherical voids in the spherical representative volume element (RVE) shows a satisfactory agreement of the results for all analyzed samples if the maximum porosities are used for comparison.
Originality/value
The paper presents a new mathematical-physical method for examining the effect of porosity on the characteristics of hardened concrete. Porosity is essentially related to density variations. Therefore, it was logical to define the limit values of porosity using the strain energy density.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to show the possibility of using the quartz regular surface profile in the form of protrusions and troughs of a triangular shape instead of a random surface profile characterized by a Gaussian correlation function when analyzing the electromagnetic field parameters above the quartz surface to determine the conditions of the effective surface subnano-polishing.
Design/methodology/approach
The numerical determination of the evanescent field optimal configuration formed near the quartz rough surface coated with an aqueous solution of calcium hypochlorite when illuminated from the side of the solution has been considered. The finite-element approach is used to solve the Helmholtz two-dimensional vector equation.
Findings
Conditions of effective photochemical polishing of rough surface with profile in the form of triangular protrusions and troughs to a sub-nanometer level of roughness are found. These optimal conditions are achieved when the light falls normally on the quartz surface and the height of the surface protrusions is small (up to 20 nm).
Originality/value
This paper shows the possibility of simplifying electrodynamic calculations and analyzing an evanescent field near a quartz surface for the purpose of photochemical polishing by replacing the random profile function with a deterministic periodic function. That is, the novelty of this paper, which supplements the works published earlier [Journal of Modern Optics, 67(3) (2020):242–251; Optik, 207 (2020):164438].

Abstract
Purpose
H2O, CO2 and CO are three main species in combustion systems which have high volume fractions. In addition, soot has strong absorption in the infrared band. Thus, H2O, CO2, CO and soot may take important roles in radiative heat transfer. To provide calculations with high accuracy, all of the participating media should be considered non-gray media. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to study the effect of non-gray participating gases and soot on radiative heat transfer in an inhomogeneous and non-isothermal system.
Design/methodology/approach
To solve the radiative heat transfer, the fluid flow as well as the pressure, temperature and species distributions were first computed by FLUENT. The radiative properties of the participating media are calculated by the Statistical Narrow Band correlated K-distribution (SNBCK), which is based on the database of EM2C. The calculation of soot properties is based on the Mie scattering theory and Rayleigh theory. The radiative heat transfer is calculated by the discrete ordinate method (DOM).
Findings
Using SNBCK to calculate the radiative properties and DOM to calculate the radiative heat transfer, the influence of H2O, CO2, CO and soot on radiation heat flux to the wall in combustion system was studied. The results show that the global contribution of CO to the radiation heat flux on the wall in the kerosene furnace was about 2 per cent, but that it can reach up to 15 per cent in a solid fuel gasifier. The global contribution of soot to the radiation heat flux on the wall was 32 per cent. However, the scattering of soot has a tiny influence on radiation heat flux to the wall.
Originality/value
This is the first time H2O, CO2, CO and the scattering of soot were all considered simultaneously to study the radiation heat flux in combustion systems.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the mathematical model comprising a heterogeneous fluid-saturated fissured porous layer overlying a non-homogeneous anisotropic fluid-saturated porous half-space without fissures. The influence of point source on horizontally polarized shear-wave (SH-wave) propagation has been studied intensely.
Design/methodology/approach
Techniques of Green’s function and Fourier transform are applied to acquire displacement components, and with the help of boundary conditions, complex frequency equation has been constructed.
Findings
Complex frequency relation leads to two distinct equations featuring dispersion and attenuation properties of SH-wave in a heterogeneous fissured porous medium. Using MATHEMATICA software, dispersion and damping curves are sketched to disclose the effects of heterogeneity parameters associated with both media, parameters related to rigidity and density of single porous half-space, attenuation coefficient, wave velocity, total porosity, volume fraction of fissures and anisotropy. The fact of obtaining classical Love wave equation by introducing several particular conditions establishes the validation of the considered model.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, effect of point source on SH-wave propagating in porous layer containing macro as well as micro porosity is not analysed so far, although theory of fissured poroelasticity itself has vast applications in real life and impact of point source not only enhances the importance of fissured porous materials but also opens a new area for future research.
