Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate Indonesian Muslim millennials’ decision-making process in purchasing halal food by introducing knowledge variable into the theory of planned behavior framework and education level (EL; i.e. low vs high) as the moderating variable.

Design/methodology/approach

There were 400 questionnaires that were distributed to obtain responses from Indonesian Muslim millennials consumers. SmartPLS was used as the structural equation modeling approach to perform the multi-group analysis.

Findings

EL plays an important role that determines Indonesian Muslim millennials’ decision-making process to purchase halal food.

Research limitations/implications

The EL was distinguished based on the Indonesian formal education system, which excluded the religious education system from the analysis.

Practical implications

The information conveyance of halal food product attributes should be conducted gradually according to the millennial consumers’ EL. Millennial consumers with higher EL are more likely to internalize the credence attributes of halal food compared to the lower EL counterpart.

Originality/value

This study found the significant differences in terms of halal food purchase decision-making between the two groups of lower EL and higher EL.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to holistically discuss, explore and synthesise the key literature on visual management (VM), an important, yet highly fragmented subject that is frequently referred in lean production accounts.

Design/methodology/approach

An extensive literature review was conducted to classify the current literature, to explore the different aspects and limitations of the current discussions on the subject, to clarify in what ways VM benefits manifest themselves in a workplace and to identify the future research focus.

Findings

VM is an important close-range communication strategy based on cognitively effective information conveyance. This strategy has been frequently discussed in the production management literature. However, the literature is fragmented as to the roles of VM in a production setting; the body of literature lacks integrated focus and cohesion with an abundance of related terminology from scholarly works and consultant books; a practical VM tools taxonomy and a visual workplace implementation framework were presented; there is poor clarity with regards to the functions (benefits) that VM may provide within organisations, nine conceptual VM functions were proposed; a wide array of future research directions related to VM was identified.

Originality/value

This paper synthesises the key literature related to VM, providing a conceptual picture of the current knowledge.

Abstract

Purpose

One challenge facing the digitalized workplace is communication control, especially emotion regulation in which individuals try to manage their emotional experiences and/or expressions during organizational communication. Extant research largely focused on the facilitating role of a few media features (e.g. fewer symbol sets). This study seeks to provide a deeper understanding of media features that individuals, as receivers of negative emotions expressed by communication partners, could leverage to support regulating negative emotional communication in the workplace.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used qualitative research methods to identify media features that support regulating negative emotional communication at work. Data were collected using interviews and was analyzed using directed content analysis in which media features discussed in media synchronicity theory (MST) were used as the initial coding schema but the researcher was open to media features that do not fit with MST.

Findings

In addition to media features (and capabilities) discussed in MST, this study identified five additional media features (i.e. message broadcasting, message blocking, receiving specification, recipient specification and compartmentalization) and two underlying media capabilities (i.e. transmission control capability and participant control capability) that may support regulating negative emotional communication. Two major mechanisms (i.e. reducing or eliminating emotion regulation workload, and providing prerequisites or removing obstacles for emotion regulation) via which media features support emotion regulation were also identified.

Originality/value

This paper provides a more comprehensive understanding regarding communication media features that may support emotion regulation in particular and communication control in general. Findings of this study contribute to several literatures and may also transfer to other similar contexts.

The multimedia data are also known as interactive data. The multimedia is progressively turning into the “greatest big data” which are the most imperative and important hotspot for bits of knowledge and data. The multimedia data also provide incredible open door for the multimedia computing in the big data centric as a functioning disciplinary research field. As per current technological usage in terms of Internet or smart devices, the data manipulate in the form of digital. Massive multimedia data have been produced in the different forms like text, image, video, and audio which is shared among vast number of people. The multimedia data are real-time unstructured, heterogeneous, and multimodal. It has vast scope to mine model, learn, and analyze the service provided by multimedia. Of course, some primarily level challenges need to be addressed like analysis, storage, retrieval, and data processing. The most complicated thing in multimedia big data (MMBD) analytics is that the computer cannot understand higher level of semantics. The quality of experience (QoE) is the most evolving part of MMBD which are directly intended with storage and performance. MMBD are highly resource intensive. They often require dedicated processing capabilities in terms of graphical processing unit (GPU). An advance-level storage-related mechanism is also needed for efficient parallel processing, transmission, and presentation. Generally, non-multimedia data are always forming in text which is normally understood by machine. The multimedia data always in the form of videos are easily understood by human compared to textual data, but it is more complex task to make it understandable to machines. The MMBD performs the task by converting the human language to computer language in an efficient manner. This chapter is also introducing salient features of MMBD. The main aim of this chapter is to cover the fundamentals for MMBD computing and feasibility study. The chapter explores the technical problems and challenges to be addressed. It also focuses on methodologies and approaches that are available from the perspectives of MMBD computing life cycle. The chapter may be beneficial for the readers to understand the features, importance and application of MMBD.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to underpin the impact of cloud computing in global accounting information systems (AIS). Moreover, it investigates the key aspects that ought to be considered by the organization before choosing to pick the correct accounting system.

Design/methodology/approach

The study looks at and depends on narrative investigation of previous studies. In the examination talked about the principle issues with respect to the utilization of cloud and database the executives in the AIS through developing research model.

Findings

The focal point of the paper is the impact of cloud computing worldview on the business area. This paper highlights different facts of cloud accounting, published research papers and the benefits and possible risks determined by the implementation of cloud services, mostly in relation to the accounting department.

Originality/value

Considering the numerous ramifications of cloud advancements on the present business process, there is a need for an examination of how these innovations will be used in AIS to improve precision, benefits and risks. At the same time, there is need to investigate the determinant elements of actualizing cloud advances in the AIS. More importantly, to the author’s knowledge, this is the first study that focuses on the number of published research works to show the importance of cloud computing in accounting and information systems.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the 29th IATUL Conference on “Digital discovery: strategies and solutions” held in Auckland, New Zealand in April 2008.

Design/methodology/approach

The article gives an outline of the issues, content, keynote speakers, social networking and location of this conference.

Findings

The IATUL meeting presented a wide range of cutting‐edge topics defining the future roles of librarians in a globalised information society. Participants gained insights into the workings and visions of librarians around the globe, had the opportunity to share experiences and best practice and to find new inspiration and encouragement for their own daily work. The conference included areas such as policies for the information society, digitalization strategies, open access initiatives, e‐research developments, library support for e‐science, library customer orientation, Web 2.0 applications for libraries, learning experiences of the Net generation, information literacy as well as data and knowledge management.

Originality/value

The paper provides a conference report of value to library and information professionals, in particular to library directors and senior managers, regarding the development of a modern dynamic infrastructure for digital information and communication and the role of libraries therein.

Abstract

Purpose

The space industry has experienced rapid development over the last few years. Activities such as building things in space, learning about our Earth and exploring outer space are satisfying people's fantasies and achieving humanity's ambitions. Such activities have also generated many issues that belong to several information systems (IS) research domains. In this article, the authors discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with the space economy.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors discuss why the emerging space economy opens a new frontier of e-commerce and data analytics. Linking three important IS research areas (i.e. digital commerce, data analytics and information security) to the space economy, this study motivates scholars to pay close attention to this promising new frontier for IS research.

Findings

The authors identify new research opportunities within several IS research contexts (digital commerce, data analytics and information security). The authors highlight the potential for opening a robust, interdisciplinary field in the IS domain that could provide valuable insights for practitioners and academics.

Originality/value

Because of the unique characteristics of the space economy, this article presents some promising avenues, research opportunities and implications for several IS fields (digital commerce, data analytics, decision science, information sharing and information security and new business models). Indeed, many opportunities are interdisciplinary in scope, with overlaps occurring between IS and other disciplines.
