Abstract

Purpose

Information security has become an essential entity for organizations across the globe to eliminate the possible risks in their organizations by conducting information security risk assessment (ISRA). However, the existence of numerous different types of risk assessment methods, standards, guidelines and specifications readily available causes the organizations to face the daunting tasks in determining the most suitable method that would augur well in meeting their needs. Therefore, to overcome this tedious process, this paper suggests collective information structure model for ISRA.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed ISRA model was developed by deploying a questionnaire using close-ended questions administrated to a group of information security practitioners in Malaysia (N = 80). The purpose of the survey was to strengthen and add more relevant additional features to the existing framework, as it was developed based on secondary data.

Findings

Previous comparative and analyzed studies reveals that all the six types of ISRA methodologies have features of the same kind of information with a slight difference in form. Therefore, questionnaires were designed to insert additional features to the research framework. All the additional features chosen were based on high frequency of more than half percentage agreed responses from respondents. The analyses results inspire in generating a collective information structure model which more practical in the real environment of the workplace.

Practical implications

Generally, organizations need to make comparisons between methodologies and decide on the best due to the inexistence of agreed reference benchmark in ISRA methodologies. This tedious process leads to unwarranted time, money and energy consumption.

Originality/value

The collective information structure model for ISRA aims to assist organizations in getting a general view of ISRA flow and gathering information on the requirements to be met before risk assessment can be conducted successfully. This model can be conveniently used by organizations to complete all the required planning as well as to select the suitable methods to complete the ISRA.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate how smart tourism technologies and memorable tourism experiences affect tourist satisfaction and tourist destination loyalty.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 600 questionnaires were distributed, 360 were returned (60% response rate) and a covariance-based structural equation modeling technique was used to test the hypotheses.

Findings

The results of this study explain that smart tourism technologies and memorable tourism experiences play essential roles in enhancing tourist satisfaction and tourist destination loyalty.

Practical implications

This study specifies that tourists have pleasant memories and are satisfied at a tourist destination; as a result, they are more likely to revisit and recommend a tourist destination to their friends, family and other tourists. If a tourist has a negative experience with smart city info-structure facilities, a tourist might reach an overall conclusion to not revisit or recommend the location to other tourists.

Originality/value

This study provides empirical evidence to support the importance of smart tourism technologies and memorable tourism experiences in enhancing tourist satisfaction and tourist destination loyalty.

Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to present a synopsis of inertially‐driven future demographic, economic and technologic realities that will predictably alter the marketplace operating environment for post‐secondary education during the next 10 to 15 years. The article also seeks to explore a detailed scenario speculating on multiple implications for the university as it simultaneously confronts all of the predictably changing elements of its operating environment.

Design/methodology/approach

A convergence of published long‐term demographic, economic and technologic trends and forecasts is examined that has begun to produce structural and operational changes throughout the business world, setting in motion five fundamental transformations in the context of all enterprises: the globalization of the economy; the information of work; the disaggregation of organizations; the maturation of the workforce; and the reconfiguration of employment. The practical implications of these long‐term realities for industrial era universities are described, and a scenario for the future evolution of the “post‐industrial university” is presented, modeled on – and in consonance with – transformations already under way throughout corporate enterprise.

Findings

Reliably forecastable aspects of the University's operating environment, including a shortage of qualified faculty, stagnant personal income and baccalaureate markets, mounting competition from for‐profit schools and an explosion in new applied knowledge in every field and discipline are likely to coerce innovation and change in higher education in spite of institutional intransigence, necessity being the mother of invention.

Originality/value

A scenario based on multiple statistically valid forecasts does not constitute an infallible prediction of the future, but it does present decision makers and strategic planners with sound benchmarks for the pace and scale of change that may reasonably be expected, as well as raising issues and posing options that routine linear extrapolations are unlikely to have revealed.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyse the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in establishing destination appeal and reflect on the implications for smart tourism destination development. The focus is on identifying and analysing technological solutions by considering six elements shaping tourism destination appeal, namely, attractions, public and private amenities, accessibility, human resources, image and character and price.

Design/methodology/approach

To deliver public and private sector implications, the authors have reviewed and analysed relevant papers that were published in hospitality and tourism journals (42 Q1 and Q2 ranked journals based on SCImago Journal Rank) between 2010 and 2018.

Findings

ICTs affect the marketing and management of tourism destinations. They foster their innovativeness (e.g. interpretation of destination factors, new travel trends, innovative products, VA and AR), contribute sustainability (e.g. visitor management and reducing the use of resources) and improve accessibility (e.g. information provision, navigation, availability of sites and travel planning). The adaptation of technological solutions in the hospitality industry can be related to increased productivity, profitability and quality of services. Additionally, ICTs facilitate visitor decision-making (e.g. online distribution channels and information accessibility), influence overall travel experience and enable the sharing of visitors’ impressions.

Research limitations/implications

The significant limitations of this study include restrictions on the timing of publication and on journal selection.

Originality/value

This paper reviews full-length research papers that were published in relevant tourism and hospitality journals. This paper complements the current literature by addressing the role of ICTs in establishing destination appeal and reflecting on implications for smart destination development and future research.

Abstract

In Brunei Darussalam the implementation of a technical infrastructure to improve access to the digital world and various e‐government initiatives are empowering the country through an informed community and an efficient government. A number of ICT‐related projects have been planned and implemented under the Brunei Economic Development Council and e‐government initiatives. Digital libraries and the digital transformation of heritage information have been identified as the most viable areas to be developed in an effort to strengthen the information basis of the community. This paper describes the plans for one important project, the Virtual Library System of Brunei (VILIS Brunei), and outlines the economic sustainability issues being considered.

Purpose

The primary aim of the article is to create a systemic innovation theory.

Design/methodology/approach

In discussing the above, the article will draw on institutional theory, Miller's theory of living systems and systemic thinking. North's “action theory” and Asplund's “motivation theory” are also used to explain aspects of institutional innovations.

Findings

A systemic innovation theory, based on 14 propositions.

Research limitations/implications

Further research should investigate the connection between innovation and economic crises.

Practical implications

Organizations, countries or regions, such as the EU, must make institutional changes that promote economic changes.

Originality/value

First, the article provides a new understanding of processes which foster innovation. Second, it attempts to provide a brief elaboration of Williamson's transaction cost theory. Third, it provides a new classification of service innovation, making it possible to make an analytical distinction between tangible and intangible service innovations. This distinction makes it possible to integrate service innovation as a natural element in all organizations. Fourth, the article provides a conceptual framework (“coin the frame”) around what the author has termed Asplund's “motivation theory” and North's “action theory”.

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to use systemic thinking to explain institutional change. The paper is conceptual, based upon conceptual generalizations.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper considers the question: how can one explain institutional changes? Explaining institutional change is demanded by several recent authors. An interpretation framework is first developed around explanations, where various perspectives on explanations are considered. Then the various perspectives are used to explain institutional change. Finally, an analytical model is developed to explain institutional changes.

Findings

The analytical model is used in order to develop a conceptual model to explain institutional changes in the economic system.

Originality/value

The paper breaks new ground in using systemic thinking to explain institutional change.
