Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a two-stage approach for estimation of spacecraft’s position and velocity by indirect linear measurements from a single antenna.

Design/methodology/approach

In the first stage, direct nonlinear antenna measurements are transformed to linear x-y-z coordinate measurements of spacecraft’s position, and statistical characteristics of orbit determination errors are analyzed. Variances of orbit parameters’ errors are chosen as the accuracy criteria. In the second stage, the outputs of the first stage are improved by the designed Extended Kalman Filter for estimation of the spacecraft’s position and velocity on indirect linear x-y-z measurements.

Findings

The complex content of the measurement matrix in the conventional method causes periodic singularities in simulation results. In addition, the convergence of the filter using direct measurements is highly dependent on the initialization parameters’ values due to the nonlinear partial derivatives in the Jacobian measurement matrix. The comparison of the accuracy of both methods shows that the estimation by using indirect measurements reduces the absolute estimation errors. The simulation results show that the proposed two-stage procedure performs both with better estimation accuracy and better convergence characteristics. The method based on indirect measurements provides an unnoticeably short transient duration.

Practical implications

The proposed method can be recommended for satellite orbit estimation regarding its presented superiorities.

Originality/value

Inputting the single antenna measurements to the filter indirectly results in a quite simpler measurement matrix. As a result, the convergence of the filter is faster and estimation errors are lower.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study is to systematically review the literature of indirect cost of financial distress to understand its scope, measurements, impact size and determinants to synthesis with future research agenda.

Design/methodology/approach

Five-step process of systematic literature review (SLR) as applied by Opoku et al. (2015) is used. SLR extracted 47 studies of indirect cost after applying specified search criteria. Data regarding measurement, impact size and determinants are presented and summarised in specified tables.

Findings

SLR showed that the study of indirect cost in developing countries is a literature gap. It is also found that opportunity loss, operating profit loss, market loss and risk premium are most studied indirect costs using legal definition or ex ante proxy of financial distress. However, future studies are recommended to use both non-linear leverage and ex ante proxy of financial distress. Future studies are also suggested to use the moderation technique while studying the determinants of indirect cost.

Research limitations/implications

Literature selection is based on specific search criteria that can miss some of the other related literature.

Originality/value

The indirect cost of financial distress is more costly and difficult to measure due to its complex concealed effects. A detailed literature of indirect cost is needed to understand the construct that eventually will help to define the future research agenda. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no SLR of indirect cost is provided yet. Therefore, the outcome of this research will be valuable for both academicians and practitioners.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the linear and nonlinear effects of market integration on carbon emissions and explore the direct and indirect paths of market integration on carbon emissions through path analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors first conduct a measurement and contrastive study of the market integration and carbon emissions of China’s 28 provinces from year 1995 to 2015. Then, the linear effect of market integration on carbon emissions is analyzed by using the fixed-effect model. Next, based on the path analysis method, the direct and indirect paths of market integration’s impact on carbon emissions are explored. Finally, the panel threshold regression model is used to evaluate the effect of market integration on carbon emissions under different situations of geographic distance.

Findings

The results show that first, the improvement of market integration can increase carbon emissions in the form of a linear relationship. Second, market integration not only has a direct and positive impact on the carbon emissions, but also has an indirect and positive impact on carbon emissions through the level of economic development, and a negative impact on carbon emissions through technological level. Third, an increase in market integration can reduce its positive effect on carbon emissions, but the improvement of economic growth and technology level can both enhance the positive effect of market integration on carbon emissions.

Research limitations/implications

This paper focuses on the impact of market integration on carbon emissions in 30 provinces in China, while, the authors do not conduct a comparative analysis of different regions, so there are certain limitations. In addition, policy interaction between regional governments is also a key factor affecting carbon emissions, but this paper does not consider the effect of policy interaction, future follow-up research will try to incorporate it into the analytical models.

Practical implications

An important practical implication of this research is that market integration should be regarded highly in China’s energy conservation and emission reduction efforts. The research results have important reference value for policy authorities to formulate relevant policies. That is, the government can play a more active role in the process of integration through breaking the regional blockade and interest barriers to comprehensively improve resource utilization efficiency and technical level, and ultimately achieve regional low-carbon development.

Originality/value

This paper explores the effects of market integration on China’s carbon emissions based on different methods and perspectives, and confirms that market integration plays a vital role in China’s carbon emissions through economic growth and technological progress. Notably, based on the studied results, some specific and practical suggestions are proposed in this paper so as to reduce carbon emission and realize the sustainable development of economy and society in China.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the importance-performance map analysis (IPMA) and explain how to use it in the context of partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). A case study, drawing on the IPMA module implemented in the SmartPLS 3 software, illustrates the results generation and interpretation.

Design/methodology/approach

The explications first address the principles of the IPMA and introduce a systematic procedure for its use, followed by a detailed discussion of each step. Finally, a case study on the use of technology shows how to apply the IPMA in empirical PLS-SEM studies.

Findings

The IPMA gives researchers the opportunity to enrich their PLS-SEM analysis and, thereby, gain additional results and findings. More specifically, instead of only analyzing the path coefficients (i.e. the importance dimension), the IPMA also considers the average value of the latent variables and their indicators (i.e. performance dimension).

Research limitations/implications

An IPMA is tied to certain requirements, which relate to the measurement scales, variable coding, and indicator weights estimates. Moreover, the IPMA presumes linear relationships. This research does not address the computation and interpretation of non-linear dependencies.

Practical implications

The IPMA is particularly useful for generating additional findings and conclusions by combining the analysis of the importance and performance dimensions in practical PLS-SEM applications. Thereby, the IPMA allows for prioritizing constructs to improve a certain target construct. Expanding the analysis to the indicator level facilitates identifying the most important areas of specific actions. These results are, for example, particularly important in practical studies identifying the differing impacts that certain construct dimensions have on phenomena such as technology acceptance, corporate reputation, or customer satisfaction.

Originality/value

This paper is the first to offer researchers a tutorial and annotated example of an IPMA. Based on a state-of-the-art review of the technique and a detailed explanation of the method, this paper introduces a systematic procedure for running an IPMA. A case study illustrates the analysis, using the SmartPLS 3 software.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite some attempts to integrate the market orientation construct into the international marketing area, most conceptual and empirical studies have been conducted in the context of domestic operations. In addition, few studies have examined the quadratic effects of customer and competitor orientation on export performance. To address this gap in the literature we test a model that examines whether customer and competitor orientation have linear or quadratic relationships with export performance. We also investigate if competitive intensity moderates the linear and quadratic relationships between customer and competitor orientation and export profit.

Design/methodology/approach

The hypotheses are tested using survey data collected from 197 Brazilian export firms. Structural equation modeling was conducted to test the hypothesized relationships and to validate the proposed conceptual model.

Findings

Empirical evidence reveals that, while customer orientation has a U‐shaped relationship with export sales, the competitor orientation–export profit relationship is linear. Our results also provide evidence that the positive quadratic relationship between customer orientation and export profit is mediated by export sales. Contrary to expectations, the results also indicate that none of the linear or quadratic relationships investigated in the model are moderated by competitive intensity.

Originality/value

We test a model in an export context that examines whether the relationships between the separate components of market orientation and export performance are linear or quadratic. We also contribute to the literature by examining these relationships in the context of a developing country, namely Brazil.

While management-accounting research continues to focus on cost drivers, research has recently begun to examine revenue drivers. We review the research on revenue drivers with reference to five revenue-driver models in the accounting literature. The revenue drivers identified by quantitative empirical research are located in a revenue-driver model based on their levels of analysis (customer, product, organization, industry) and other characteristics of a revenue driver–revenue relation. Implications of this model for research are discussed.

Abstract

Presents a framework for the development of process measurement systems. The purpose can be described as reflecting a strong need for increased knowledge of the development of process‐oriented measurement systems for analysing the order process, as well as knowledge concerning the prerequisites for this development and the potential effects it can have. The research subordinated a systems approach together with elements of the actor‐based approach. The research area’s boundary spanning character required an interdisciplinary integration of knowledge. The research process encompassed an extensive study of the literature, as well as a field study and a major case study carried out in the form of action research. The author’s present occupation as a management consultant has also been important for the verification of the results presented. Presents an eight‐step model for developing a measurement system for a specific process. Special attention is given to the step of deriving and selecting the actual measures. The framework also includes a suggestion for measurement system, a process measure classification model and a discussion of the measurement needs of the process‐oriented organisation.

Abstract

Purpose

Electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) and electrical resistance tomography (ERT) are promising techniques for multiphase flow measurement due to their high speed, low cost, non-invasive and visualization features. There are two major difficulties in image reconstruction for ECT and ERT: the “soft-field”effect, and the ill-posedness of the inverse problem, which includes two problems: under-determined problem and the solution is not stable, i.e. is very sensitive to measurement errors and noise. This paper aims to summarize and evaluate various reconstruction algorithms which have been studied and developed in the word for many years and to provide reference for further research and application.

Design/methodology/approach

In the past 10 years, various image reconstruction algorithms have been developed to deal with these problems, including in the field of industrial multi-phase flow measurement and biological medical diagnosis.

Findings

This paper reviews existing image reconstruction algorithms and the new algorithms proposed by the authors for electrical capacitance tomography and electrical resistance tomography in multi-phase flow measurement and biological medical diagnosis.

Originality/value

The authors systematically summarize and evaluate various reconstruction algorithms which have been studied and developed in the word for many years and to provide valuable reference for practical applications.
