Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a Web application system for visualizing Twitter users based on temporal changes in the impressions received from the tweets posted by the users on Twitter.

Design/methodology/approach

The system collects a specified user’s tweets posted during a specified period using Twitter API, rates each tweet based on three distinct impressions using an impression mining system, and then generates pie and line charts to visualize results of the previous processing using Google Chart API.

Findings

Because there are more news articles featuring somber topics than those featuring cheerful topics, the impression mining system, which uses impression lexicons created from a newspaper database, is considered to be more effective for analyzing negative tweets.

Research limitations/implications

The system uses Twitter API to collect tweets from Twitter. This suggests that the system cannot collect tweets of the users who maintain private timelines. According to our questionnaire, about 30 per cent of Twitter users’ timelines are private. This is one of the limitations to using the system.

Originality/value

The system enables people to grasp the personality of Twitter users by visualizing the impressions received from tweets the users normally post on Twitter. The target impressions are limited to those represented by three bipolar scales of impressions: “Happy/Sad”, “Glad/Angry” and “Peaceful/Strained”. The system also enables people to grasp the context in which keywords are used by visualizing the impressions from tweets in which the keywords were found.

Abstract

The National Coal Board has always recognized the vital part that properly used teaching aids can play in any training programme. In many respects coal mining Is a unique Industry, and techniques and methods learned by operatives elsewhere are rarely applicable to coalgetting. There is thus a basic need to train from scratch all new entrants to the industry and, coupled with this, a need to arrange refresher and retraining courses to keep employees up to date on all aspects of their work.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to quantify the impact of online customer reputation on financial profitability.

Design/methodology/approach

Online reputation is captured by extracting the most recurring textual themes associated with customer satisfaction and dissatisfaction, expressed within positive vs negative online guest reviews on Booking.com. Latent semantic analysis is used for textual analysis. Proxies of overall financial performance are manually constructed for the sample hotels, using financial data from the Financial Analysis Made Easy (FAME) database. Ordinary least squares is used to gauge the effect of online customer reputation on financial profitability.

Findings

Empirical findings indicate that recurring textual themes from positive online reviews (in contrast to negative reviews) exhibit a higher degree of homogeneity and consensus. The themes repeated in positive, but not in negative reviews, are found to significantly associate with hotel financial performance. Results contribute to the discussion about the measurable effect of online reputation on financial performance.

Originality/value

Contemporary quantitative methods are used to extract online reputation for a sample of UK hotels and associate this reputation with bottom-line financial profitability. The relationship between online reputation, as manifested within hotel guest reviews, and the financial performance of hotels is examined. Financial profitability is the result of revenues, reduced by the costs incurred in order to be able to offer a given level of service. Previous studies have mainly focused on basic measures of performance, i.e. revenue generation, rather than bottom-line profitability. By combining online guest reviews from travel websites (Booking.com) with financial measures of enterprise performance (FAME), this study makes a meaningful contribution to the strategic management of hotel businesses.

Abstract

DURING much of the Second World War, the affairs of the Library Association were conducted for the Council by an Emergency Committee. The record of its meeting on 10th June 1941, includes the following: “A resolution having been received suggesting that a committee be formed to consider post‐war reconstruction, it was resolved that by means of a notice in the LIBRARY ASSOCIATION RECORD, Branches and Sections should be invited to formulate suggestions for the consideration of the committee. A draft questionnaire for the purpose of an enquiry into the effects of the war on the public library service was approved”. In July, the Committee reported “further arrangements … for carrying out an exhaustive survey designed to give the necessary data for full and detailed consideration and ultimate recommendation as to the future of public libraries, their administration and their place in the social services”. The promised notice appeared as an editorial in September.

Abstract

This paper aims to give the Investigator of Fraud an appreciation of the sorts of assistance that the Forensic Document Examiner can offer him. It gives an indication as to the material needed from the investigator if the examiner is to provide the maximum help. It contains some information about the possibilities of dating documents.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to share this study’s efforts to foster belonging in special collections public service spaces, as Black and Latina practitioners of color, while navigating known systemic professional barriers to inclusivity in the library information profession.

Design/methodology/approach

In this conceptual essay, frameworks from Black and Chicana feminist theories are applied which resonate deeply with this study’s practices but are not often encountered in library spaces, namely intersectional nepantla, which is used to situate the positionality within special collections.

Findings

Fostering belonging in special collections environments is an ongoing effort, but this study offers reflections in solidarity with all who seek to increase inclusivity and equity in their spaces. It is believed that the cumulative impact of many small actions implemented from the ground up can potentially be as significant as top-down, administrative charges.

Originality/value

This article's originality stems from both its authors and the methodology. As BIPOC practitioners, to the authors emphasize the authentic, day-to-day interactions that are essential to developing inclusivity and equity in special collections and archival spaces. Special collections reference workers have limited time off desk to collaborate and conduct research.

Abstract

Decision making is considered an important topic in management studies. However it is postulated that current thinking in decision making is out of date and inapplicable in today's organisations. Hence, a more realistic approach needs to be considered. A political framework is offered as the alternative mechanism for understanding decision making processes in organisations.

Abstract

The need for a top management transition is a situation that eventually faces all ongoing organisations. While some replacements require quick and decisive actions necessitated by the death or serious illness of the chief executive officer (CEO), a major corporate blunder, or some other catastophic event, the more typical scenario involves a longer transition period. The former mode of transition (catastrophic event) has generally been considered a “revolutionary” change, while the latter has been classified as an “evolutionary” event (Bigelow, 1981). Yet, the differences between these two extremes appears to be based far more on the duration of the change, perhaps intensity as well, and not on the general process of change involved.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper provides a theory base for deriving connotative descriptors for photographs from existing denotative descriptors, and then demonstrates a model for enhancing browsing within image collections by providing a tool for carving up the searching space.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper conceptually explores the nature of iconic messages contained in an image by adopting semiotics as a theoretical tool. A problem of image retrieval is identified as loss of connotative messages during the image representation process. The paper proposes an image‐retrieval model utilizing an association thesaurus that facilitates the assignment of connotative index terms by making use of denotative index terms of an image. A series of experiments are performed for evaluating the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Findings

Experimental results demonstrate that the association thesaurus improves image‐retrieval effectiveness by increasing the recall of connotatively related image documents as well as the recall of browsing sets.

Practical implications

Applying connotative index terms to an image would be time consuming. Deriving connotative terms from denotative terms and then using them to enrich the browsing environment suggest a method of increasing retrieval effectiveness while reducing the resources required for representation.

Originality/value

Since images are often used to illustrate concepts that are not immediately evident from just the objects in front of the lens, connotative descriptions are particularly valuable. Since human perception of images is, in a sense, hard wired into our brains, browsing is a frequent and reasonable search method in image collections. Using connotative descriptors to point the way to clusters of images with a higher probability of relevance changes the locus of control over representation establishes an environment for dynamic representation, and gives credibility to browsing as a significant search method.
