Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the role of housing in adult safeguarding under the Care Act (2014) in England.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper provides a summary of the implications for housing organisations and their staff of adult safeguarding under the Care Act. The implications, underpinned by the six safeguarding principles, are explained within a summary of the legal and practice framework for safeguarding in England.

Findings

The paper draws upon research by Imogen Parry (2014). It argues that past failings in adult safeguarding in England have placed it high on the housing agenda and that housing has a key role to play in adult safeguarding.

Practical implications

Housing organisations need to be proactive partners in local multi-agency arrangements for adult safeguarding. Staff and contractors need to receive training in line with their role to raise awareness of their safeguarding responsibilities.

Originality/value

The value of the paper is to increase and maintain awareness of the need for housing engagement in the adult safeguarding agenda.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify and encourage good practice in adult safeguarding by housing providers, despite their unclear and largely unregulated role in this area.

Design/methodology/approach

Literature search on policy and research on the role of housing in adult safeguarding. Good practice search, drawn from No Secrets consultation responses and more recently, from other housing providers.

Findings

Despite the current weak incentives for housing providers to engage in adult safeguarding, some have done so effectively, overcoming barriers to joint working.

Research limitations/implications

This is not a comprehensive study of all good practice in this area; much will exist “unsung” and unrecognised.

Practical implications

Increase housing providers' involvement in adult safeguarding.

Originality/value

The paper is of value, as there is a dearth of literature on the role and potential of housing and adult safeguarding.

Abstract

The National Consortium for Sheltered Housing (ERoSH) is responsible for promoting the benefits of sheltered, or as some providers say, retirement housing as a main component of community care. It's also responsible for raising awareness of the work of those working in sheltered housing, increasing joint working between sheltered housing, health and social services professionals, and identifying and promoting working practice. This article looks at how the practitioners involved are developing the new role for sheltered housing which has a broader scope and purpose to suit the national agenda.

Abstract

Awareness of the problem of elder abuse was aroused in Norway in the early 1980s. A pilot project conducted between 1991 and 1994, described here, established an important body of knowledge based on casework. Central authorities believe that improved knowledge and competence will result in local change and further development to help the victims of violence.

Abstract

With service user led training becoming more popular in the training of mental health workers, little attention seems to have been paid to how the trainers themselves experience this and the effect it has on them. Here Shaun Johnson, who has worked as the facilitator of a service user led training organisation and is a service user trainer himself, gives an overview of the issues and difficulties faced by service user trainers and how their lives could be made so much easier if unintentionally created problems could be avoided.
