Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine whether customer-company identification (CCI) can transfer from one organization to the next within the context of service alliances.

Design/methodology/approach

A between-subjects experiment using a fictitious alliance and a field study focused on a real alliance tests identification transfer at the time of a service alliance announcement and while the service alliance is in operation.

Findings

Identification transfer is enabled by an exclusive service alliance but not an inclusive one. For identification transfer to be maintained, customers must perceive the companies as a coherent group (i.e. high entitativity) and have close physical proximity to the alliance.

Originality/value

By drawing heavily on self-categorization theory for the proposed effects, the current research provides a new theoretical framework to the service and brand alliance literature that contrasts with the attitude-based theories commonly used. Furthermore, the current research explores how company-company relationships influence CCI whereas most research has focused on characteristics of the customer-company relationship. These two differences suggest service alliances provide more value to the companies and customers than currently realized.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the multicriteria identification method used for solving the microscale heat transfer problem. The thin film exposed to ultrashort laser pulse is modeled using the finite difference method. The parameters of the model are tuned on the basis of experimental data. The multicriteria identification of the numerical model parameters is performed for subsets of experimental data.

Design/methodology/approach

The multicriteria identification method is used in the paper. The Pareto front for two criterions is created. The two-temperature model of heat transfer in microscale is used in the numerical model.

Findings

The multicriteria identification for two subsets of experimental data leads to different results. The obtained Pareto front allows to choose the most suitable set of numerical model parameters.

Originality/value

The multicriteria identification method was used for the first time to solve the microscale heat transfer problem.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose an efficient and straightforward approach for system identification of a rotating single link flexible manipulator (RSLFM). Also, the achieved results are experimentally validated through identification procedure.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed system identification approach is applied to a RSLFM with a tip mass. At first, the dynamic model of the system is derived using Lagrange method. Then, an efficient method is developed for identification of such a system. This method facilitates the nonlinear complicated identification problem of the RSLFM to a simplified root finding problem.

Findings

The main advantage of the developed method is to convert a complicated system identification process to a simple nonlinear equation solution. This approach uses small-size input/output data set and requires a short-time interval of data acquisition, which gives important advantages in lower computational load and lower execution time. The investigated approach is studied on experimental system identification of a single link flexible manipulator. To demonstrate this fact, the developed method is successfully applied in identification of two other mechanical systems; the inverted pendulum on a cart and the ball and beam apparatus.

Originality/value

In this work, the proposed identification approach has been originally applied to a RSLFM and two other mechanical examples. All obtained identification results show the performance and applicability of the developed method clearly. This approach is not restricted in using state space or transfer function. It has significant superiority in comparison with other known approaches including autoregressive with exogenous input (ARX) and Box-Jenkins (BJ).

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore and provide empirical evidence for the combined effects of individual characteristics, training design factors as well as environmental factors (as pre-training factors) on training transfer.

Design/methodology/approach

Primary data were collected from 235 managerial-level full-time employees in two phases with a temporal gap of two months. Both procedural and statistical measures were used to minimize the common method variance problem. Hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to analyze the data.

Findings

The results of this study clearly point out that all four predictor variables (voluntary participation, prior training information, training needs identification and training evaluation) positively and significantly influence training transfer.

Research limitations/implications

The study contributes to the training transfer literature in three ways. One, the authors have shown the positive influence of pre-training factors (together as well as independently) on training transfer. The study is grounded in a strong theoretical framework, thus fulfilling the previous gap. This study brings more clarity to those variables (such as voluntary training) which are having contradicting views in the extant literature.

Practical implications

The study has significant findings for the organizations operating in the current business scenario in their endeavor to enhance learning transfer, which is very low and a major cause of concern for every organization. If management is aware of the success factors of training transfer, they can ensure a better training transfer.

Originality/value

The training transfer literature showcases two significant gaps; first of all, it lacks in using appropriate motivational theories, and second, there is variability in the results. This paper bridges both the gaps and attempts to advance our understanding of training transfer grounded in the theoretical framework by focusing on the role of individual, motivational and situational factors of training transfer to understand better which predictor variables can improve training transfer.

Abstract

Purpose

In the age of nine-figure transfer fees and football stars building their own brands and follower base, a shift in fan identification in football appears to be taking place as athletes can build strong connections with their followers. This paper examines the level of identification shown by football fans towards both their favourite team and their favourite player, in connection with the concept of fan loyalty.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 4,707 international respondents participated in an online survey to examine the relationship between fan identification and fan loyalty, and to measure the impact of variables like country, player, club, on fan identification using multi-regression analyses.

Findings

The results underline the strong presence of team identification compared to identification of single players. Results have also revealed that the relationship between a fan's favourite team and player has a significant impact on identification levels towards both actors. Fans supporting a foreign club were found to show significantly stronger team identification than those who support a club from their own country or region.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the growing body of publications in the field of sports consumer research and underlines the importance of understanding the quality of relationships and thus the identification of fans with clubs and individual players for the stakeholders involved. International sports marketing is becoming increasingly important and an understanding of fan interests is essential for effective marketing, as information on trends in fan interests enables a more tailored strategy for clubs and sponsors.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aimed to investigate the impact of a university’s abrupt closure on the lives of graduate students and examined the role of grit, social support and school identification as they transferred to a new institution.

Design/methodology/approach

An online survey was administered to a diverse sample of 130 psychology graduate students after their university unexpectedly closed and the students transferred to another institution to complete their degrees. The survey included both qualitative and quantitative measures of the impact on different areas of their lives, anxiety and depression, life satisfaction, social support, grit and school identification.

Findings

Students reported experiencing financial loss, family and marital strain, anger, fear, uncertainty and loss of progress toward professional goals. Nearly 40% of participants had scores indicating elevated anxiety and depression. Students with higher anxiety and depression and lower life satisfaction tended to identify less with their new institution. Both social support and grit were related to better adjustment and life satisfaction.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to examine the impact on graduate students following the closure of an institution of higher education. The findings have implications for educational policy and graduate student support services.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify linear model parameters of launch vehicles based on the actual flight test data. To compare the estimated parameters with the ones obtained by two other approaches: identification based on the recorded data from six‐degree‐freedom simulation of motion and linearization of the equations of motion via small‐disturbance theory as an analytical method.

Design/methodology/approach

As the vehicle contains all the key issues in system identification such as time‐varying, unstable, nonlinear, and closed‐loop dynamics, Kalman filter method under the autoregressive with exogenous input model structure is used as a powerful method to estimate the dynamic parameters.

Findings

Simulation results demonstrate that the linear model parameters used in the vehicle design and analysis should be validated by flight test data to accurate the vehicle dynamic model as more as possible.

Practical implications

One of the most important usages of a linear model of aerospace vehicles is to design their controller. Another application of the algorithm presented in this paper is to estimate online dynamic parameters of the vehicle when they are required for the operation of the control system.

Originality/value

Being strongly affected by vehicle dynamic characteristics, linear model parameters of launch vehicles play important part in their design and analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose an automatic method to generate semantic annotations of football transfer in the news. The current automatic news integration systems on the Web are constantly faced with the challenge of diversity, heterogeneity of sources. The approaches for information representation and storage based on syntax have some certain limitations in news searching, sorting, organizing and linking it appropriately. The models of semantic representation are promising to be the key to solving these problems.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach of the author leverages Semantic Web technologies to improve the performance of detection of hidden annotations in the news. The paper proposes an automatic method to generate semantic annotations based on named entity recognition and rule-based information extraction. The authors have built a domain ontology and knowledge base integrated with the knowledge and information management (KIM) platform to implement the former task (named entity recognition). The semantic extraction rules are constructed based on defined language models and the developed ontology.

Findings

The proposed method is implemented as a part of the sport news semantic annotations-generating prototype BKAnnotation. This component is a part of the sport integration system based on Web Semantics BKSport. The semantic annotations generated are used for improving features of news searching – sorting – association. The experiments on the news data from SkySport (2014) channel showed positive results. The precisions achieved in both cases, with and without integration of the pronoun recognition method, are both over 80 per cent. In particular, the latter helps increase the recall value to around 10 per cent.

Originality/value

This is one of the initial proposals in automatic creation of semantic data about news, football news in particular and sport news in general. The combination of ontology, knowledge base and patterns of language model allows detection of not only entities with corresponding types but also semantic triples. At the same time, the authors propose a pronoun recognition method using extraction rules to improve the relation recognition process.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to examine the manner in which employees access, create and share information and knowledge within a complex supply chain with a view to better understanding how to identify and manage barriers which may inhibit such exchanges.

Design/methodology/approach

An extensive literature review combined with an in‐depth case study analysis identified a range of potential transfer barriers. These in turn were examined in terms of their consistency of impact by an end‐to‐end process survey conducted within an IBM facility.

Findings

Barrier impact cannot be assumed to be uniform across the core processes of the organization. Process performance will be impacted upon in different ways and subject to varying degrees of influence by the transfer barriers. Barrier identification and management must take place at a process rather than at the organizational level.

Research limitations/implications

The findings are based, in the main, on an extensive single company study. Although significant in terms of influencing both knowledge and information systems design and management the study/findings have still to be fully replicated across a range of public and private organizations.

Originality/value

The deployment of generic information technology and business systems needs to be questioned if they have been designed and implemented to satisfy organizational rather than process needs.

Purpose

This paper aims to understand the factors that influence employee organizational identification in family firms, and through identification, the willingness to engage in citizenship behaviors.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing from the stewardship theory, the authors develop a model to test the relationships between family relatedness and relational identification to the family firm owner, employee-focused stewardship practices, organizational identification and organizational citizenship behaviors. The authors test the hypotheses using regression and the Preacher and Hayes PROCESS macro on a sample of 292 family firm employees.

Findings

The findings suggest that both relational identification with the family firm owner and employee-focused stewardship practices positively influence organizational identification, and that familial ties to the family firm owner can influence relationships with citizenship behaviors for non-family employees.

Originality/value

The authors build on existing literature to investigate how employees identify themselves within a family firm and how stewardship practices from the employee's perspective (rather than managers' or founders' perspectives) can influence organizational identification and citizenship behaviors.
