Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to study electrochemically and by weight-loss experiments the effect of UAE Rhazya Stricta Decne extract on the corrosion inhibition of mild steel in 1.0 M HCl solution, which will serve researchers in the field of corrosion.

Design/methodology/approach

Weight loss measurements were carried out on mild steel specimens in 1.0 M HCl and in 1.0 M HCl containing various concentrations (ranging from 2.0 to 0.002 g/L.) of the UAE Rhazya Stricta Decne extract at temperatures ranging from 303 to 343 K.

Findings

The aqueous Rhazya Stricta Decne leaves extract was found to be a highly efficient inhibitor for mild steel in 1.0 M HCl solution, reaching about 90 per cent at 2.0 g/L and 303 K, a concentration considered to be very moderate. Even with one-tenth of that concentration, 0.2 g/L, an inhibition of about 82 per cent was obtained at 303 K. The rate of corrosion of the mild steel in 1.0 M HCl is a function of the concentration of the Rhazya Stricta Decne extract. This rate increases as the concentration of the Rhazya Stricta Decne extract is increased. The percentage of inhibition in the presence of this inhibitor was decreased with temperature which indicates that physical adsorption was the predominant inhibition mechanism because the quantity of adsorbed inhibitor decreases with increasing temperature.

Practical implications

This inhibitor could have application in industries, where HCl solutions at elevated temperatures are used to remove scale and salts from steel surfaces, such as acid cleaning of tankage and pipeline, and may render dismantling unnecessary.

Originality/value

This paper is intended to be added to the family of green corrosion inhibitors which are highly efficient and can be used in the area of corrosion prevention and control.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study electrochemically and by weight loss experiments the effect of 4‐vinylbenzyl triphenyl phosphonium chloride on the corrosion inhibition of mild steel in 1.0 M HCl solution, which will serve researchers in the field of corrosion.

Design/methodology/approach

Electrochemical and weight loss measurements were carried out on carbon steel specimens in 1.0 M HCl and in 1.0 M HCl containing various concentrations (1.0 × 10−7 to 1.0 × 10−4 M) of the laboratory synthesized 4‐vinylbenzyl triphenyl phosphonium chloride at temperatures ranging from 303 to 343 K.

Findings

4‐vinylbenzyl triphenyl phosphonium chloride was found to be a highly efficient inhibitor for carbon steel in 1.0 M HCl solution, reaching about 99 per cent at the concentration of 1 × 10−4 M at room temperature and about 96 per cent at 303 K, a concentration and temperature considered to be very moderate. The percentage of inhibition in the presence of this inhibitor was decreased with temperature which indicates that physical adsorption was the predominant inhibition mechanism because the quantity of adsorbed inhibitor decreases with increasing temperature.

Practical implications

This inhibitor could have application in industries, where hydrochloric acid solutions at elevated temperatures are used to remove scale and salts from steel surfaces, such as acid cleaning of tankage and pipeline, and may render dismantling unnecessary.

Originality/value

To provide a novel synthesized stilbazole derivative as a corrosion inhibitor for researchers in the field of corrosion science.

Abstract

Purpose

To provide a novel synthesized stilbazole derivative as a corrosion inhibitor for researchers in the field of corrosion science.

Design/methodology/approach

Electrochemical corrosion measurements (tafel plots) were carried out in a 3‐electrode electrochemical cell on the mild steel electrode in 1.0 M HCl and in 1.0 M HCl containing various concentrations (1.0 × 10−7 M to 1.0 × 10−3 M) of the laboratory synthesized trans‐4‐hydroxy‐4'‐stilbazole.

Findings

The percentage inhibition of trans‐4‐hydroxy‐4'‐stilbazole on mild steel in 1 M HCl solution increased with the increase of concentration of that inhibitor. This percentage inhibition steeply increased from 10.11 percent (at 1.0 × 10−7 M) to 30.34 percent at 1.0 × 10−6 M. The slope of this increase slightly decreased at the concentration of 1.0 × 10−5 M to reach 39.61 percent. At higher concentrations, the increase of the percentage inhibition was steeper than the initial part, and reached 97.92 percent at 1.0 × 10−3 M.

Practical implications

This inhibitor could have application in industries, where hydrochloric acid solutions are used to remove scale and salts from steel surfaces, such as acid cleaning of tankage and pipeline and may render dismantling unnecessary.

Originality/value

This paper is intended to be the building block or the nucleus for a new family or group of stilbazole derivatives in electrochemical studies of corrosion inhibitors.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this study is to construct a theoretical framework concerning wage determination, grounded in principles and supplemented by conventional theories. It discusses the Islamic perspectives on minimum wage and examines contemporary challenges and intricacies in its application.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses thematic analysis to create the conceptual framework, drawing upon a review of pertinent literature such as academic papers, books and articles published up to 2023.

Findings

The framework encompasses various categories, namely, employee characteristics, job characteristics, market factors, compensation practices and Islamic principles. Each category consists of multiple variables. The resulting framework offers a holistic and ethically grounded methodology for wage determination, aligning with both Islamic and conventional perspectives. This study notes the absence of a universally agreed-upon minimum wage. Islamic economics faces challenges due to the unclear application of principles, limited awareness, legal constraints and a lack of empirical evidence on wage systems, along with complexities in their implementation.

Research limitations/implications

The paper’s limited scope focuses solely on the Islamic perspective on wage determination, without comparing it to the conventional viewpoint. This may have implications for future research.

Practical implications

The insights on Islamic principles and wage determination guide scholars and policymakers interested in promoting just and equitable wages.

Originality/value

This study is distinct in its integration of various factors to propose an all-encompassing framework for wage determination, rooted in the Quran and principles, while also reinforcing the framework with conventional theories. Additionally, it adds to the growing body of literature by investigating the Quran’s stance and principles on minimum wage, as well as discusses the challenges involved in implementing an Islamic approach to wage determination, which has received limited attention in Islamic literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to draw a map of the general features of epistemological and critical concerns in contemporary Islamic philosophy. This study will not be confined to the domain of academic philosophy or to those who are professionals in the field of philosophy.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper adopted the critical rational approach in dealing with contemporary Islamic philosophy in the Arab world. The scope will include scholars from different fields of epistemology who tried to present a “vision” of the attitude that should be adopted in facing the challenges of the age and the problems of the nation on the epistemological level or the political, economic and social levels.

Findings

There is a need for a philosophy of action and progress rather than a philosophy that is based on abstract ideas and theories and of words/rhetoric. The ethics required to accomplish this ought to identify the attributes of the citizen who can reach self-actualization through legitimate means based on a progress agenda with theoretical and philosophical foundations.

Research limitations/implications

Because a critical rational approach can be dealt with from different perspectives, this paper will adopt the classification of the principal intellectual trends: the reformist, secular and liberal.

Practical implications

This paper covers a long time span to determine whether the philosophical projects have been effective.

Originality/value

This paper, which criticizes the philosophic projects that are theoretically unsound and that do not address real social problems (like poverty), argues the need for a philosophy of progress and action. This will lead to devising an agenda that addresses the challenges the society is facing and to finding alternative and creative solutions resulting in development.

Abstract

Leadership is basically about influence and ability to cultivate followership. This chapter examined the nature of indigenous socio-political leadership in Africa using Zimbabwe, Sudan and Nigeria as caselets and compared this with the post-colonial or modern-day leadership realities. A survey was conducted among senior executives at Lagos Business School, Nigeria, with a sample size of 200 persons, to find out their perception of the African indigenous leadership system. An overwhelming 90% believe that culture plays a big role in shaping African leadership style. However, two-thirds of the respondents agreed that Africa lacks proper institutional structures to support good leadership, thus encouraging corruption (97% of the respondents) and non-accountability among the leaders. Also, only 5% thought cultural orientation was the reason why the African followers do not hold their leaders accountable. In other words, it is not in the African culture not to hold leaders accountable for their actions. So, what went wrong? We attempted a deeper look at the effect of colonial rule and the attendant militarisation of the African continent. Our conclusion is that the colonisation of the continent by Europe brought significant distortion to the traditional African indigenous leadership institutions and the psyche of the African leader and the followers alike. Post-colonial Africa has witnessed 133 recorded coups d’etat between 1952 and 2016. This chapter is recommended to all those who seek a deeper understanding of the nature of the African indigenous leadership practices and the factors that have shaped these over the years.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to evaluate the inhibitive effect and adsorption behavior of 5-(ethylthio)-1H-tetrazole (EHT) and 5-(benzylthio)-1H-tetrazole (BHT) on copper in a sulfur-ethanol system.

Design Methodology Approach

Evaluation was carried out using electrochemical measurement and surface analysis techniques. Measurements of static friction coefficient by scanning electron microscopy and contact angle analysis were applied and finally confirmed the existence of the adsorbed film. The inhibitive mechanism of the two compounds was evaluated by means of quantitative calculation and molecular dynamics simulation. The friction coefficient of corrosion surface before and after adding corrosion inhibitor was determined through static friction coefficient measurements.

Findings

The electrochemical measurement indicated that the most effective concentration of two corrosion inhibitors was 70 mg L–1, while the inhibition efficiency of that was EHT > BHT. The friction coefficient data showed that the addition of corrosion inhibitor reduced the roughness of the corrosion surface. Adsorption behavior of two inhibitors followed the Langmuir’s adsorption isotherm and was attributed to mixed-type adsorption. The results of quantitative calculation and molecular dynamics simulation showed that tetrazole rings of the two inhibitors and its connected S atoms were adsorbed on Cu(111) surface in parallel.

Originality Value

The corrosion inhibition performance of two tetrazolium derivatives in a sulfur-ethanol system was studied by combining experiments with theory, which provided a theoretical basis for the future research.
